I am having a love hate relationship with PBkids lately..they are so darn expensive on some things (I think) and really is the quality of the furniture that great (you can comment if you love yours, i really do want to hear) but i just dont see that my 4 year old needs an $800 bed. Just me, I like old stuff and it is really sturdy (usually) BUT at the same time I am really seduced by the glossy, tidy, ORGANIZED looked of their rooms, you can certainly get great ideas! I love going through the catalog over and over and over.. When I get in the store, which is so cute, much like Janie and Jack, i am usually really umimpressed with some of the fabrics (dont be offended if you just bought your little girl a $200 (twin size) quilt there because I do really like some of their things, like the pique crib bedding, and now they have boxed bumpers..love that)..AND it never fails, i find a toy or book or accessory i love..yesterday it was these plates..are they not the cutest?? and the best part, they had them in ACRYLIC which means CHEAP or cheaper..they were $5 each instead of $39 for the set and i dont need the girly bird one..i may hang these in the new playroom/bedroom as as a nod to the room’s previous use;; or we will just use them for plates..the thing is, we all love using plates on the wall but more and more places or making really great acrylic versions. For instance, Target comes out with a reallly cute new plate (acrylic) every week it seems, have you seen the hot pink damask or the blue square one with chainlink design..they are $2-3. So back to Pottery Barn, tell me..how do you really feel???

I’ve never bought anything from PB kids even though I love love love the catalogs. I too think they are expensive. I am lucky to have a local seconds type store that sells some of their surplus products. I got full size PB teen sheets for my daughter for $25. The fabric is really durable and they are stinkin cute, but I’d never have paid $100+ for them. Mostly I keep pictures out of the catalogs in my inspiration notebook so I can copy the ideas I really like in my own way. They have the best organization and paint ideas in there but I replicate them from thrift store and ikea finds.

Admittedly though, I’d probably buy whatever I loved from them if I had the disposable income that could afford it :P

The only PB kids furniture I have purchased was a desk chair for my daughter…probably the least expensive thing in the catalog! :) It was very sturdy so I was pleased. I purchased a coffee table and console table from the PB outlet (a very hit or miss place but some good deals) for our basement. Again, very sturdy but they were black and have chipped in some places. I kept looking at their dressers for my son’s room but I just thought they were too expensive. I have had good luck with the stanley young america line. The plates are adorable (and so is the price).

I love the Pottery Barn look, but usually just look at the catalog for inspiration, not to purchase. I guess if I had lots of money, I would buy, buy since I don’t, I just copy.

I love it when I get the PB catalog because of the ideas!! I am working on my little boy’s playroom right now and think those plates would be darling!!

here’s my two cents. love their catalogs for design ideas. i love their bedding — quilts, duvets, sheets, bumpers. the regular pb bedding we have is awesome — some of the best bedding we have. the pbkids bedding my friends have they all love. washes well, holds shape, keeps color and is versatile (quilt is thick enough for floor play or warmth or hanging). their towels are awesome.

i don’t care for their furniture. i like the design but have found it to be weaker than other brands in how it’s built. i especially don’t like anything of theirs with drawers. my friend bought a crib and returned it because it was so wobbly. they sent a second one for her to try — same problem. she ended up buying one that looked the exact same from walmart for a fraction of the price and LOVES it — same thing with the changing table (baby mod from walmart).

even if we had a disposable income to buy their furniture, i’d really look around to see what else was out there.

can’t wait to see what you choose for the lil guy!

I love Pottery Barn for one reason only. Inspiration. It is too expensive for my pocket book but their magazines and store is great for ideas. I just made my own version of a Pottery Barn bed that was $500 for $63. Their teen collection is pretty amazing. Definitely up to date with the current trends for teens which I appreciate. :)

I wish I had seen those plates when I was in PBK on Saturday!

Brady’s bedding (quilt, sheets, bed skirt) is from PBK and I do love it. It’s the primary striped/checked quilt. I can’t remember the name, but I’ve loved it. And his new bedding will probably be from there, too.

As for the furniture, I just can’t swing the price tag. I’ve seen very comparable items at JCPenney and other places. In fact, JCP is wear I’m going to get his new bed and dresser.

So, in conclusion, some things are worth it and some things aren’t. That doesn’t help much, does it? :)

    Hey Holly,
had to comment when I read your post. I feel exactly the same about PB kids and their other lines. I pour over the pages each time I get a magazine and we now get PB teen since we have older boys. Really they are one of the only companies that have a stellar selection for that age bracket. What I usually do is pick a room for inspiration and I’ll buy maybe one piece, sometimes it’s the comforter sometimes just a sham and then I piece together everything else from Target, Marshall’s, Hobby Lobby or other little places I love to scour. All of the kids have comforters from there and they wash and wear so well. I love their paint deck from Benjamin Moore too and use their colors often, but will color match at Lowe’s to get a cheaper but equally good can of paint. Their ideas are great but it is so not necessary to pay those high prices, except for like I said, one great piece to start from. I’ll have to shoot you a picture of the two older boy’s new room we just finished all based on one sham; the striped henley in blue and gray from the PB teen catalog. It turned out so great! Still dying to put the curtains up but I have to find just the right moment to have them make their grand appearance!

So I take it you are having another little boy since you don’t need the bird plate??

I have some of PBK bedding, mostly bought either on SUPER clearance, the PB outlet, or thrift shops. I honestly don’t know about their furniture…I certainly don’t feel the need to spend $$$ on it. We found my son’s Thomasville bed for $10 at a resale shop. I much prefer to find things at yard sales or thrift shops. Fits my budget and mine thrill of the hunt!!

I have bought a piece of furniture from them and it is particle board on the underneath. It is a sofa table so it doesn’t get used much…but I remember thinking it wasn’t worth what they charged me for it.

I did buy my 2nd son’s crib bedding from there. It wasn’t terribly expensive and I couldn’t find anything else like it…even at Target.

But I have copied many an idea from them! So maybe that extra markup I paid was compensation for all the stolen ideas?

Just stumbled onto your site – LOVE it!

Like you, I absolutely LOVE looking through PB catalogs but … I end up going elsewhere when making a furniture purchase. We ended up with and Ethan Allen Kids daybed for our daughter’s bed – which ended up being our son’s bed instead. The quality of furniture was WHY we chose Ethan Allen over Pottery Barn. This bed will last us forever and can be used in a guest room later on.

As much as I love Pottery Barn’s organizing systems, I went with a line at Target that is made of particle board. It’s super cheap but has done an awesome job with all the kids’ books for the past 5 years. I figure once they are out of this stage and move onto chapter books, I won’t WANT a huge wall of empty squares, ya know?

I only buy bedding at Pottery Barn once it goes on sale … I’ve been waiting for a new duvet and pillows for my daughter’s room for several months – it will be worth the wait. I go with basics for the duvets and then just switch out pillow cases and stuffed animals when they want to change things.

So, for me, bedding and smaller accessories, I can buy there. Furniture – I don’t think PB furniture is a good enough quality to demand such a high price.

Can we echo every post that is posted here….We truly like Pottery Barn Kids (and regular Pottery Barn) for inspiration and ideas…but Yowie! a little pricey some time for the quality.

Have a blessed and wonderful day!

i buy quite a bit from there but only if it’s 75% or more off. they really have great clearance deals. all three of their stores, especially pb teen. I love bedding and get their pillow cases for 1.99 a lot of times. i just look at their magazines and shop their clearance on line or in store. love everything i get.

Do NOT buy their furniture!!! I’ve got a ton of it and it’s worthless AND especially for a 4 year old!!! I’ll tell you about it when I email you shortly about your order!!

Just found your blog from another blog and love it! I was looking to see if you have a button!? I will be sending ya an email soon to chat abt maybe helping me pic colors for our new nest here. I have been thru 20 + and am lost!:( Anyways, LOVE PBK and PB but yes do feel they are over priced. Great quality though. We have some PB end tables for 8 yrs now that still are wonderful. The boys bedding all came from there thanx to Nana & Papa and clearance. The outlet in San Marcus is great. We bought the Berkley changing table there for like $300 and were thrilled. It has been wonderful and sad now that my boys no longer need a changing table. The top came off in this last move. Anyways, love um but hate their prices. I always wait um out for sales or find look alikes. Again love your site! Congrats on the new baby!
