    and so do I, so it makes it a joy to work on her family room. She is looking for just the right fabrics for new sofa pillows and other accents..even drapes.

    this is her sofa fabric from Calico Corners.

    the above toile might look just great..she has butter yellow walls and great existing roman shades (yellow silk buffalo check!)I think long panels will look so great layered over her silk shades!

    and here is her existing chair (also from Calico) with pretty fabrics..the pillows are nice but like i said she wants to freshen up, they seem a little predictable to Sarah..of course that is the great thing about fabric..just a few yards can totally change your look and really breathe new life into a room…

    We are also thinking about YET another cute fabric on her parsons chair(not shown)? so here is yet another toile (from duralee) and a great accent fabric with bugs, her kids will love this..arent these just great, both found here just gorgeous and unique!

    mixing fabrics can be crazy..there are several different “rules”, a check, a floral, a stripe, large scale, tiny scale, stay in the same colorway..yada yada..whatever…if it is too contrived looking that defeats the purpose of mixing..but it can get too crazy so there is a fine line..it does take work but it will be worth the effort! Hope you like some of these Sarah! Of course they wont all work but we will find the perfect combination so that she loves her family room (even the carpet..that is another blog post!;;)

    [NOTE: the pottery barn bird pillow two posts below is apparently very elusive..i cant find a link..i have found it on their website (obviously) but now cant find it and neither can several readers..this also happened last week.i thought it was sold out and then it reappeared, i posted about it and it is gone..so fyi..just call them i guess if you really want it, not sure if it is in the most recent catalogs..it is $49 or $59 if i remember correctly, the cover only...it actually might look pretty in Sarah's leather chair!]

    switching gears, below are some fabrics from Ballard that might work if not the above..these fabrics are reading a little more pink online..we’ll see when she gets the samples in the mail! the floral would be great for the drapes..

    dont you love the greens..so fresh!

    I think a pattern on long drapes over her existing roman shades will really add some interest to her LARGE room and take the focus off of her floors (there is a carpet story there but we wont get in to it!;) I just love long drapes hung high on chunky rods with wooden rings..they dont even have to be pinch pleats..let the pretty fabric do the work, not the fabrication of the drapery! that’s my philsophy (maybe based on my sewing skills, or lack of)

    these are available from Ballard Designs…either by the yard or we can have them sew them up into pillows and panels (yes Ballard can do that for you..any of their fabrics can be made into just about anything.love ballard!)..

    OK so I went out to Warrenton today (am I wrong to assume that everyone who reads my blog knows about the famous Round Top antiques Fair started in the 1960s by Emma Lee Turney as a HIGH quality antiques market..”Round Top” has grown and now includes not only the museum quality show Turney founded but also now spans miles and miles and varies in quality and price like the texas weather, there is truly something for everyone..no time or energy to explain any more..google Round Top if you have not heard;;;) anyway, it was hot. I did not intend to go…my client and i were just going to make a quick trek to the La Bahia show on the outskirts of the madness but the Seed Box booth has moved close to Clutter so we went on out there..with Henry…poor baby Henry..i just could not stay too long..he was getting too hot..so thankful for clients that understand being a mommy must come first. OK so we were only there an hour and found some great stuff…like super long vintagey jumbo rulers and a large old survey wheel to hang on the wall…no pictures of course..sorry. so that’s my sad mini-report from Round Top..i did see lots of burlap on everything, old new, tacky, awesome…big shock!

    and then i got home and i had a package..my own mass produced burlap! that’s ok iwth me…so my pottery barn pillows finally arrived..they are nice feeling, soft dont have an odor really, or have holes and are cheaper than the old antique ones..i love the lumbar and the Francais cafe one with the stripe..returning the Brazil one..no offense brasil just not feeling it..check them out

    also in love with this pillow from PB..gorgeous..will look great in a very Southern looking, calico corners-ish living room i am working on..yellow walls, red fabrics on sofa and chair..some big monograms i am sure evenually and this pillow..get it while it lasts..style for the masses only stays in stores so long;;;;

    so that’s it…i go to Round Top and i end up still talking about Pottery Barn!

    We’ve been talking about baby spaces here at HMI for weeks (ok months) so i want to change directions and look at kitchens…

    I’ll start off with my own little kitchen, small but efficient and published in the June 2005 issue of Better Homes & Gardens (“Chic on a Shoestring”). Built in 1941 our home has a classic, “non-open,” pre-war floorplan…when we purchased the house..the kitchen was DARK..with dark stained knotty pine, 1970s green cabinets, and pink with gold flecks formica (yes I am serious)…but i saw major potential..especially in the 1950s stainless Tappan range..so cool…still used daily (though it does need work)..we painted the cabinets “pure white” from SW and i even painted the countertops (and sealed) until we could afford granite (we did 10″ square granite tiles to save $$), hardware from Restoration, added screen moldings to the door for a faux paneled look and added glass to two doors…

    in the case of our little home, simply painting truly transformed and opened up the tiny space,…i believe that bright pure whites really help freshen older homes so keep that in mind..i think the older or more “dated” the home the brighter you should go on woodwork with white paint (if you choose to go that direction)..save creamy whites for new construction is my thought..ok so back to the kitchen, i wanted to knock out the little “penisula” but i needed the storage it provided so left it, we also added the simple molding up top to add a little interest..

    the walls are a nice butter color, similar to Martha’s “buttermilk biscuit”..the light is from IKEA (I want a vintage school house light..hint hint) the wall of plates are a mix of decent quality ironstone, my mom’s 1970s wedding dishes, and IKEA plates…and dont worry the chicken prints are gone (what was i thinking??;;) i now have damask fabric in those 4 white frames. oh and floor tiles are 18″ square linoleum from Home Depot..no fancy tile here! I will share more pictures of the cool Tappan range soon..i promise..and you know what is really tragic..

    the little rods are IKEA and the tea towel window treatment is Anthropologie

    {images from BHG}

    Now to switch gears…this image below pops up all over the shelter mags..I THINK it is Whoopi Goldberg’s California kitchen (she has multiple homes) done by Sue Balmfoth of Bountiful?? correct me if i am wrong…love it.

    {image from Country Home}

    and the kitchen below from Nie Nie won a home award from Cookie magazine..this mom is so talented and admired for so much more than just her style..i just love the photographs casual on the wall and the light..

    [image from Cookie mag]

    and of course there is always our beloved Heather Chadduck..this is her new home in Alabama i believe..i loved her kitchen in her Dallas Cottage too..if you have those pictures, please link in the comments…

    [images from Cottage Living]

    and Lettered Cottage has a fab kitchen, go over there and check out the before and afters..amazing!…the black cabinet idea is just such a great solution i think..i find black paint easier to cover with and just looks so sharp…really give this thought if you are trying to update a ranch..love the doors off and shelf brackets..layla is amazing!

    [above images from The Lettered Cottage]

    and now let’s bring it back to Texas and a home I have been working on recently just a few miles from my own little kitchen..this is a lovely new home but the homeowners wanted to do things in the new construction to really add character and history..like using a vintage door from an old church for the panty, “mismatched” furniture style cabinets etc, two colors, “feet” on the cabinets etc…..

    now these mood boards are for brainstorming so she does not need to use everything, for instance there are several rug options…and drape options (either a solid or the nice key/trellis brown and white fabric..love that..makes this all fresh and not too rustic)..the fireplace screen is a little cheesy but it is there to illustrate the idea of the metal scrolly railing to replace the wall behind the sofa..there is a funky half wall there..i want it demolished..we’ll see if she does it or not..wall color will be neutral..and a nice metal firecreen might be pretty..love the horse prints..elegant.not too country..very american. like lisa.

  • Sep22

    [note: this post is a rerun from a post on my private blog from last fall..thought i would share here, stay tuned for the giveaway later today and upcoming post on kitchens (i dont just work on nurseries yall!) and more updates..and please note, this "research" on prices was from last year, who knows what pumpkin prices will be this year...how about leaving in comments what kind of prices you are finding in your area??!!!]

    Forget oil and gas…what is up with the price of PUMPKINS??? (or “puh-kins” as Drew says) We have three fruit stands in my little town..one was $10-11 for a medium/large pumpkin and basically .79-.89 cents per pound on everything else..and NINETY NINE CENTS for ONE of those little tiny pumpkins..nuts! One of the other fruit stands had the same big pumpkins for $6.99 each and I bought TWELVE of the tiny white pumpkins for $2+..that is better!(at the local grocery store they are 8 in a bag for $5.99 (I think) that seems soo high)..THE BEST fruit stand (and the last one i went to of course) had a wonderful variety and the CHEAPEST prices..

    everything was roughly .59 cents a lb..nearly half from the other places..but their tiny pumpkins wer 2 for a $1, not so good..so interesting to compare..then yesterday at Home Depot they had medium size pumpkins for $4.97..of course i would rather buy them from the local fruit stand and pay more than from a chain (especially the stand that buys peas and watermelons from my father in law) BUT not at $10-11 each..that place was nuts!

    I love all of the interesting varieties..like the one in the picture above..it almost looks striped..i also love ones with bumps and warts..and the variety called “fairy” and “ghost”…. my “assistant” and I added dots to some (of course there are great instruction/examples on how to do the dots the “right way” in various shelter mags and online BUT we just freehanded and it is not perfect but thats ok and its done;)..we went a little overboard but had fun..my next project is to decoupage pumpkins with book pages..i saw this on a metal pumpkin in a store for $45..now that is crazy!

    If you live near Houston and travel hwy 6 or 290, email me and I will tell you where to find the best!

    …. THIS on Baby girl spencer’s wall above her bed…it is perfect..

    Good job Kim!
    I am sure Mama Spencer will send us an updated picture in all of her spare time;;

    And fyi about Kim @ SmallWords..she is not currently taking orders so you cant even get artwork from her right now (does that make Henry’s go up in value??? ha!) BUT yall need to bookmark her in your faves and watch for when she reopens orders..she is worth the wait and we def want to keep track of what she is doing. She is very talented AND an awesome mother..good luck with EVERYTHING kim..family and business..you are awesome! God bless you!

    AND a note about sources.. Here at Holly Mathis Interiors we are often interrupted during the highly technical and extremely professional blogging process..this means sometimes while on the sofa with kids watching Noggin the power on the netbook runs out, or someone needs help with a potty issue..many posts never get saved or finished..so really yall..if i dont link something (or proofread, spelling mistakes have gotten worse with the new smaller keyboard on my netbook, i know it is annoying, it annoys me too but this blog is either not perfect or doesnt exist) so give me a break please..i mean really, it is a wonder any posts ever get “published” at all. So if you dont see a link (and if it is highlighted brown, that means it is a LINK and you simply have to click on it) I am not annoyed but i get a lot of email asking me for links..sometimes the links are there and the person did not click on the word, sometimes i forgot or was too lazy to link..sometimes all it would take is for the reader to google the item;; THIS DOES NOT MEAN I DONT LIKE YOUR EMAILS..please feel free to email and ask about paint colors or sources when i dont list and they are things you simply dont have enough info to google yourself..usually i meant to provide the information but just got distracted or forgot..Some of my blog readers think i need to stop apologizing..they are sweet and i appreciate the sentiment but i also want this blog to be useful thus the explanation..I appreciate your ongoing patience with this new mama. yall are awesome.

    And finally the source on the pink silhouette over the crib below (it was source i believe in the initial polyvore mood board but you have to click on the polyvore board in order to get to the sources..let me know if that does not work for you..the way polyvore organizes souces is one of the things i love about that tool! awesome) anyway..i have mentioned Sarah + Abraham before but again, they are awesome..love her work.
