Polka dot pumpkins

[note: this post is a rerun from a post on my private blog from last fall..thought i would share here, stay tuned for the giveaway later today and upcoming post on kitchens (i dont just work on nurseries yall!) and more updates..and please note, this “research” on prices was from last year, who knows what pumpkin prices will be this year…how about leaving in comments what kind of prices you are finding in your area??!!!]

Forget oil and gas…what is up with the price of PUMPKINS??? (or “puh-kins” as Drew says) We have three fruit stands in my little town..one was $10-11 for a medium/large pumpkin and basically .79-.89 cents per pound on everything else..and NINETY NINE CENTS for ONE of those little tiny pumpkins..nuts! One of the other fruit stands had the same big pumpkins for $6.99 each and I bought TWELVE of the tiny white pumpkins for $2+..that is better!(at the local grocery store they are 8 in a bag for $5.99 (I think) that seems soo high)..THE BEST fruit stand (and the last one i went to of course) had a wonderful variety and the CHEAPEST prices..

everything was roughly .59 cents a lb..nearly half from the other places..but their tiny pumpkins wer 2 for a $1, not so good..so interesting to compare..then yesterday at Home Depot they had medium size pumpkins for $4.97..of course i would rather buy them from the local fruit stand and pay more than from a chain (especially the stand that buys peas and watermelons from my father in law) BUT not at $10-11 each..that place was nuts!

I love all of the interesting varieties..like the one in the picture above..it almost looks striped..i also love ones with bumps and warts..and the variety called “fairy” and “ghost”…. my “assistant” and I added dots to some (of course there are great instruction/examples on how to do the dots the “right way” in various shelter mags and online BUT we just freehanded and it is not perfect but thats ok and its done;)..we went a little overboard but had fun..my next project is to decoupage pumpkins with book pages..i saw this on a metal pumpkin in a store for $45..now that is crazy!

If you live near Houston and travel hwy 6 or 290, email me and I will tell you where to find the best!

Just found your blog from Kim at smallwords and have loved looking through your stuff. Last year I hit up a local pumpkin patch. I got good size pumpkins for $5 and for going on the hayride/tour the kids and I all got one for free. They also had the real small ones for 5 for $2 or $3.

  4. i live in the cypress area and would love to know where you found the best priced pumpkins! i love the fall decor!

  5. Love your polka dot pumpkins! I usually paint a face and name for each family member on our pumpkins! I plan to spell someting out this year w/ some little indoor pumpkins. Modge Podge is my BFF! 🙂

  6. It looks beautiful! I love the mix of pumpkin colors. I don't think I've ever seen anything but orange and white here. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place (I go where they're cheap!)

I hope you don't mind that I completely copied your polka dot white ones…BUT I gave you complete credit and added a link back to you! My kids had a great time helping to paint and feel like they've contributed to the decor!

  7. Hempstead Brookshire Bros. has huge pumpkins for $3.99. But I must put in a plug for Hardwicke's nursery in my hometown Rising Star TX. The biggest selection of gourds I have ever seen and reasonably priced – every size, shape and color. Their pansies are vibrant – a flat of 18 for $13.95 with volume discounts. Of course this only works if you're one of Holly's readers from central TX. Hardwicke's has a store in Eastland and Cross Plains.

  8. DiIorios in Hempstead has beautiful pumpkins priced individually. So far, only orange ones. Their pie pumkins are 59 cents a lb.
