    My burlap funk did not last long, your wonderful comments and emails keep pouring in..moms unite..no stress! please keep sharing.

    and then Saturday on the way home from Nana’s house we stopped by here, 531 N. 33rd Street in Waco, Texas..my first home as Mrs. Mathis.

    isnt this the cutest little house?! just seeing our little honeymoon cottage all decked out and ready for Christmas made me feel great. I could go on and on about this place (and i am going to for a bit so settle in for some gushing). The bottom line is look at how well kept it is… that is because the owners are the most awesome landlords EVER.. His name is Chuck (his brother Harold has passed since we lived there) but Chuck still lives across the street and sends the most beautiful Christmas cards every year.

    and I am not making this up, not only did he take care of the yard (still does just look at that huge fern), but he also decorates for Christmas (in fact he would prefer you not touch anything outside..he did allow me or i should say NOT THROW A FIT when i took down the questionable pink balloon shades he had covering the interior windows which i carefully stored in the attic) which was great for me..not an outside person as many of you know. Chuck even CLEANS THE SHOWER! Yep, he cleans the shower..you see this little house has a massive, SOLID MARBLE shower and Chuck had a bad renter one time that did not keep the shower clean and it was a mess when he moved…so after that Chuck decided to do it himself. a little odd i thought at the time but it sounds awesome right about NOW.

    the house also had a MASSIVE fireplace, i think that was my husband’s favorite feature. and wonderful green and black and white tiles in the kitchen and of course wood floors….very tiny it was originally built in the 1920s in this historic neighborhood as a honeymoon cottage, so no just our honeymoon cottage but the original owners as well (are you gagging yet?;;)..they built it at the rear of the lot so they could later build a larger home in front…they never did. SO this little house has sat at the rear property line all of these years.

    Chuck and Harold grew up in the home across the street (where Chuck still lives) and later bought 531 N 33rd and began to lovingly restore it. …Chuck has it landscaped beautifully and has built a lovely courtyard area between the cottage and massive garage. I noticed he has added some carriage looking garage doors since we drove by last..he is always working on some improvement or upkeep project. I think he has owned it for about 20-25 years!

    just look at the little courtyard..the washer and dryer are hidden behind one of those doors. notice the little mirror treatments over the faux garage windows/shutters..Chuck told me he got that idea from Southern Accents magazine!

    and 531 N. 33rd’s claim to fame…Billy Graham’s granddaughter lived here while in college at Baylor.. and lucky me, i found it in the newspaper weeks before we got married..the perfect place for us to start married life..even though we were stressed with law school and graduate school, it was a great time!

    the only drawback..basically no closets…one teeny tiny. but no fear, Chuck furnished the only bedroom with two huge pine armoires..his and hers.

    so see why this made me feel better..i also remember that while living here i suddenly began to care less about academics and finishing a thesis and suddenly just wanted to have babies and decorate! sound normal for a newlywed?! I am glad my husband “encouraged” me to finish the thesis but i am also very thankful i am living the dream of the babies and decorating…so fun to look back and see all God has done in my life! Not perfect but surely blessed.

    In grad school i had to read all about the different theories and conflicts of the New South..not to minimize history or struggles BUT when i look at this beautiful 19th century farmhouse in Georgia (November issue of Southern Living), restored and shining i think NEW SOUTH INDEED..no stuffy antiques and antebellum wannabe decorating but fresh decor and color palette, modern touches with traditional antiques (like the gorgeous empire sideboard and table featured in the full article)…it all just sings!

    of course originally this house did not have an indoor kitchen, not until the 1940s was one added that was actually attached to the house (you know fire hazard etc..yall have all heard these bits of social history i am sure) but WOW there is certainly a kitchen now..who cares that the floors dont match the beautiful heart of pine in the entry and beyond.

    …this should make everyone feel better that has different tone or type wood floors in one house..who cares?!

    see more of this amazing restoration here…and if you are lucky, maybe you will still find a copy on stands or at your mother-in-law’s house on Thanksgiving…”borrow” it, she wont mind!

    Oh how i love this house..the walls, the floors, the entry light, the Audubon prints, the sideboard, the kitchen, the BEAUTIFUL monograms on linen and burlap, the mix of modern with antiques…YES it is a historic home but there is so much inspiration for a new house. swoon…

    Good job Southern Living, NEW SOUTHern Living..yall are doing a great job lately!

    Am i the ONLY person on the planet still loving the feel and look of fall decorations and NOT ready for Christmas?? I thought not. there are so many lovely fall things to decorate with..why rush on to the next thing? we do NOT have to feel PRESSURED to begin this holiday rat race..let’s enjoy what is left of fall, BE GRATEFUL and enjoy the last moments of sanity before the crazy begins.

    My husband likes to read books, i like to tear them up. Seriously, i would never hurt a real book..just one already damaged..you know, one that needs recycling. I love the way book print looks with, well anything. Last year i attempted to decoupage a pumpkin with book pages..CRAZY..i am sure some of you could do it but it was not my craft. NO wonder the one i saw HERE was $49!

    BUT my bookpage placecards shown above were obviously much easier..much more my speed..just a gift tag punch from Michaels, hole punch, twine and little pumpkin (write the name on or use stickers) and it was cute..especially atop a brown transferware plate.

    check out this fab wreath featured on Apartment therapy last week..brown or orange ribbon to hang it with this week and next and then red satin til Christmas..easy baby..that is the way to go! she used a $1 store romance novel to tear up for her pages.not sure how i feel about that..i sort of feel like it should be a good book if i am going to go to that much work to make a wreath out of it and have it as a centerpiece in my home..but then again it would just be wrong to tear up a good book…oh the tension!

    or you could use your bookpages to make flowers like my friends at Leftovers did..

    bottom line..We dont have to get consumed with Christmas “stuff” yet (unless you enjoy it and then go for it of course..i have been listening to my Wintersong cd for a long time i must admit), but the next week i am really going to try to relax and enjoy thanksgiving..and Be thankful.

    {note: rather funny..as i am typing this, my 5 year old is sitting on the front step watching the city workers “install” a Christmas wreath decoration on “our” streetlight}

    Recently, I picked up a copy of BHG‘s Special Interest Publication called Christmas Ideas. Now i will be honest, the last couple of years this magazine has seemed oddly similar to the previous year BUT this year is fresh i tell you, fresh! SO I flipped through it at “the Target” and deemed it worthy of $6 (well not worthy but i wanted it) because there was an article on Debbie Dusenberry (who i have met thank you very much and she is very nice and i love what she does) so i bought it! Later at home i realized not only was Deb of Curious Sofa in this issue but also an old favorite-JULIET ROMANO! (Dont you just love her name!)

    I knew when I turned the page and spotted THIS darling Christmas tree..could it be??? YES, i saw her name I WAS RIGHT it was Juliet and couldnt wait to see the rest. The best thing about Juliet’s article is the theme/tone/angle..it is all about a FEW DECORATIONS and more SIMPLE holiday decor…I love her philosophy.

    I first fell in Juliet’s home in 2001 (I believe that was the year, it was the year we moved in to our current home)i cant find copies of the images or my copy of the article but it is such a pretty layout…she had a coral painted bedroom..silhouettes of her chilren (one of which is name Henry and is now in college i believe!) around her white painted bedroom fireplace. I modeled the dining room after hers in fact…with pine hutch, brass (yes i said brass) light and lots of blue and white and staffordshire figurines.

    and you know what else, I sat down after reading the article and i wrote her a note. yes i did, googled her address in Seattle (am I freaking you out yet?) and just wrote her a little note. Do you ever see people in shelter magazines and feel like you know them…notice their children have grown..maybe it is just me but if not, tell me about it in the comments.

    SO, check out the 2009 issue of BHG’s Christmas IDEAS to read the rest of the story on Juliet, Debbie and others..good job BHG!

    AND if you love the look of the silhouette tree..check out this cute blog. They have a great tutorial on making silhouette ornaments to achieve a similar look.

    These little swatches are for my client Pam to see…but i thought i would share with yall too..

    these fabrics are so pretty…all very reasonable at good ol’ Hobby Lobby..the blue and the toile are linen..the damask too. actually they are all linen except the little diamond dot print.

    we all know about HL’s coupon…and when these go 30% off or if they will allow you to use your 40% coupon..you can get these for around $12 a yard give or take..at that amazing price, these fabrics are great for big projects like long panels in the bedroom (the toile or damask would be so pretty on panels) or for shams or a bedskirt for a king bed…the little print would be great on armchairs….

    So dont forget HL when looking for fabric..you might be surprised!

    Good morning! I dont know about you, but I have a love hate relationship with Monday. I love the clean slate but some mondays I end up just feeling tired and overwhelmed.

    This is a good Monday @ Chez Mathis….I hope it is for you too.

    OK so on with the Monday morning chat. Did you hear the buzz about THIS MOVIE and have you received your Traditional Home yet???? I laughed so hard because I was out running errands on Saturday and I saw the new TH and I nearly bought it right there at the expensive newstand price because (a) I could not remember if I renewed my subscription? and (B) I was dying to read about this new Nancy Meyers’s film. SO I get home and start checking my blogs and who has already written a thesis on the film and the interiors..YEP..Joni @ Cote de Texas. She is on the ball! Go read here, i am not even going to comment about it any more (until i see it) BUT I will just say I am not overly excited about seeing my favorite actress of all time Meryl Streep (Out of Africa totally influenced my design aesthetic..even more than Somethings Gotta Give, sorry Joni;;) in bed with Alec Baldwin…he is creepy (even on Thomas the tank videos) i am sorry to be negative and if his mother is reading this blog I apologize (I am sure he was a precious baby) but I just really dont feel good about seeing them together. Hopefully the kitchen will make the uncomfortable scenes worthwhile. (just check that cute little linen or burlap curtain in the left corner)

    AND #2 on monday morning chat list (see how involved this gets, probably why some mondays i dont get much done)..I have pictures to share of Baby Girl Spencer.

    isnt she adorable?? Remember she has FOUR brothers. wow!

    oh and she sent me a text..she loves the toile drapes!; She really enjoys having a feminine space where she can get away from all of those rowdy boys.;;

    please keep her in your prayers, she is having a little health issue, it is not terribly serious but her parents are hoping it will be resolved soon and as easily as possible. WE LOVE YOU BABY GIRL!

    Ok last on the list (I have more but I need to stop and feed my child) I need to talk about the blog. Things are changing here at HMI, you will see some changes in ads and formats and I am giving lots of thought and prayer to content and other areas as well. I may even put up a little poll soon to see what topics you are interested in etc… so watch the sidebar and please leave comments. I know everyone is busy and dont expect everyone to leave comments each and every time but blogging is a lot of work (and that is ok because it is a part of my little business) BUT feedback is so encouraging.

    Yall have a great Monday~ let me know what you have going on…

    when Drew was born i could not find a baby book i liked so i stumbled in to a few scrapbook stores looking for blank books and paper i liked…then i started looking online..oh my, scrapbooking and paper arts had come a long way…there is some amazing stuff out there today (dont roll your eyes until you’ve looked)…and right in the center of all of that creativity i found Jenni Bowlin and i loved her style because she uses so many vintage elements (notice the little jewels she places here and there)…be sure and check out her site, blog and products..

    somewhere along the way i saw photos of Jenni’s home in Tennessee.the mom to boys, her home is pretty and traditional but not too prissy, with lots of vintage elements but also has a modern and fresh feel.. oh and she is just gorgeous and a really authentic and geniune person to boot.

    I just knew yall would love to meet Jenni and see inside her home…so much detail!

    and the really exciting thing for us…Jenni is building a new home..a new OLD home..old plantation style with loads of charm and old elements..she told me recently that she hauled home TWO TRUCKLOADS of stuff from the Heart of Country show..i can not WAIT to see what she does with this new/old house. Hopefully she will stop by and share with us and tell about it all…another creative belle..fun to share about both Whitney and Jenni in the same week..Southern girls like paper!

    enjoy and be sure and check her blog and site. thanks Jenni for sharing glimpses of the gorgeous details around your current home and studio….God bless your new home and move!

    I just love Staffordshire figurines..especially dogs. How about you?? I dont even have a dog but i fell in love with these years ago..you know, the King Charles Spaniels..some black, some white…you’ve seen them in magazines and homes stacked inside of primitive pine cupboards sticking their noses around huge transferware platters and majolica. The epitome of the English country look.
    {forgive my bookshelf..a little stuffed..not styled for this photo but i wanted to share..you can see i also like the little vintage dime store dogs too!}

    Of course, an original pair of these little doggies could cost around 12K i discovered..,but lucky for us reproductions have been being made for hundreds of years. not so lucky for museums and collectors, it can be very difficult to discern the difference between an 18th centry original and a 19th century copy..

    I love this set with Queen Victoria’s children..and the greyhound, oh how i love the greyhounds!

    I have a pair that are new, but say Staffordshire and England on the bottom..allegedly they were made from the original molds…they were very reasonably priced and are great looking…my little white set were my grandmas and i think they were 1930s reprods? not really sure…i have also seen copies at Garden ridge years ago (pretty bad..i can say that because i bought a pair and then sold them later in a garage sale)…

    {image from HSN}

    Most recently Carleton Varney (yes of Dorothy Draper) is selling reproductions of this Staffordshire classic on HSN!!!!!!! yep, home shopping network..they are $25 for a pair…interesting huh?

    {image from Dorothy Draper}

    whatcha think?? beware though, the HSN reviews said the white is actually beigey and sort of dark??

    so there you go, staffordshire for any budget!
