    I hope everyone saw this post on Oh My! Handmade ….if not, be sure and check this out..so many great images and artists.

    Feed the Soul is a really neat project. It was started with the notion that during these hard economic times, people should still be able to enjoy art that inspires. (This reminds me of  WPA art..not stylistically or even the same situation but it made me think of WPA murals which I adore..there is one in Hamilton, Texas, by the way!)

    So ANYWAY, various artists have joined forces and put these images up on this site and they are available to print, for free. I love this.

    Many would be wonderful in a children’s space, really the possiblities are endless. Enjoy!

    The Alamo

    Posted in: family

    This post has absolutely nothing to do with design or style.  It is all about recording family memories. Please bear with me.

    Drew is very interested in History and flags and battles and the military. I am really not sure why..I was a History major but NOT military history. I guess it is just a boy thing so we embraced his interests and took him to San Antonio last weekend.

    I love this picture of Drew..he was so excited to see the Alamo. He said “it’s awesome!  I can’t believe THAT is REALLY the REAL Alamo.”  Not everyone responds that way.  I am glad we took him at a young age so he could be excited.  TOO BAD THAT BUS drove in front of the Alamo right as I was snapping the picture!  Sort of funny. And then we made our way across the street and I told him that he needed to be quiet and respectful in the shrine.

    We had sort of been joking during the drive to San Antonio, not exactly a romantic weekend…navigating the Riverwalk with two kids, actually going to visit the Alamo, the mediocre Mexican food we would be in search of…BUT I have to admit, as I walked into the Alamo with my little boy, my little Texan, it was a moment. He was so smart and interested..for a full ten minutes! (Hey, there really isn’t much to see) And then he wanted to sign the book, his entire name…that was really a moment…I was so proud of him.  And then we were off!  To the gift shop..to buy a gun! (what else?)….

    And then he assumed this position for pretty much the remainder of the day until his Daddy finally put the gun away (this after we noticed him crouching behind rocks and shooting at poor ducks on the river).

    At this point I was thinking “why did we buy that gun?” But then finally he settled down and listened to the tour guide.  Really listened. And I had another mommy moment.

    Of course Henry slept the entire time.

    We stayed at this wonderful place  and they were so kid friendly. When Drew saw the balcony he said “I can’t believe this, I feel like I am in Italy!”

    Good thing we stayed somewhere with a balcony because we were ready to go to our rooms by 7pm and we were able to enjoy the river without being ON the river. He said the Riverwalk is “very romantic.”

    And yes he did wear his Davy Crockett hat (which he already owned) the entire first day..Daddy talked him out of wearing it the second day.  In fact, he wanted to wear the complete get up (because he was DC for Halloween)…leather fringe jacket and all but we left it at home.

    I love having little boys..it is wilder than I ever expected but it is such an honor to be their mother.  To raise little men.

    Although, I am glad we made it out of town without having to stop and see Shamu.

    You must go check out Bigmama’s drapery/mistreatment tutorial. Very funny and actually pretty informative!

    Oh and I just have to share this before it gets too far past Valentine’s Day…definitely file this one away for next year… Hearts punched out of book pages, I love anything made using book print..Like this wreath that made the rounds on blogs..so wanted to do this but when did I have time to do this?? I didnt!  So I was so excited when my sweet friend Christi made this adorable Valentine’s Day version..

    Appears she covered a green foam wreath with book pages and then glued a gazillion hearts all over…Hopefully she will comment and let us know how long this took. I am going to leave it hanging in my kitchen window ALL month and then carefully store it for next year…I love it so much.  I did not leave it on the front door..too damp outside but it sure looks fun on the red door.  Just had to share.

    Well she did it, and I am so proud.  Big Mama made her drapes (it was hard for me not to say curtains right then..why is that?? maybe the phrase “big mama and curtains” just go together, no offense Melanie!)  Anyway…she sort of made them..she mistreated them and y’all, they look great!  See for yourself.

    I love that little stool. Great poufing Big Mama… and yes this was NO SEW project and dont forget, the Robert Allen fabric was only $1.99 from Fabric.com. I think she did the entire room for some insane amount like $28!.. here is a closeup.

    Read more and see before and after pictures here.  I think she purchased the drapery rod at Lowe’s.  For mistreatment instructions go to the Nesting Place.

    Oh, be sure and look…can you identify her husband’s “special object” on the mantle??  It adds that special “Texas Hill Country” touch to the room.

    I will have more mantle inspiration later in the week…stay tuned!

    Many of us know the Nester and her freeing theory of decorating,”it doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful”..say it often-it is good advice.  We all struggle with contentment and God is using the Nester to remind women that perfection and accumulating aren’t the requirement for home + beauty.  Thanks Nester (and I keep calling her Nester because I frankly don’t know her real name but she is an actual person I just know it, because we are ‘internet friends’  ha!) All of this to say, I am thrilled the Nester is sharing with us today…read here for more on her favorite colors.

    Ok so the Nester LOVES Duron’s Tobacco Road (pictured above in her former dining room..dont you love the kid on the table?!)…in fact there has been MUCH written about this color and how to have it mixed and where, etc…check it ALL out here.

    She also adores Svelte Sage (SW) ..pictured below…and Oyster Bay (SW).

    AND, here is another great post I found via the Nester’s blog with lots of links to favorite colors..hgtv also has a color forum.  So if you aren’t overwhelmed yet, just go there! You will be.

    Oh and someone asked about paint FINISH-I think most agree on eggshell or satin for the walls and semi-gloss for trim and cabinets…thoughts???

    We interrupt the “color posts” for Valentine’s Day..of course Valentine’s Day is not really until Sunday but all mamas know it was really today AT SCHOOL…so a little crazy this morning..Fortunately I had a huge blessing in the form of a friend who said “oh I am baking a ton of cookies for my daughters, just swing by and I will package up what you need for Drew’s class.”  Wow, are you serious??  YES PLEASE! Totally kept me from having to get the baby out yesterday in the COLD RAIN to go to WALMART and get candy or pencils or something to go with the Lightning McQueen cards purchased weeks ago.  I wish I had a picture to show of these cookies.  They were so pretty, pink with white pearl looking sprinkles and cute long heart shape wrapped in cellophane and tied with ribbon (notice I am using the past tense and I have no photos to show you, the cookies are GONE, even the extras…) sort of funny..I am blogging about cookies, can you tell I am TRYING to stay on a sugar-free diet..hard week for that let me tell you.

    Y’all I almost hated to leave those gorgeous cookies in the hands of those 4-5 year old boys…but then I saw the little girls with their blinged out boxes and I knew they would appreciate the beauty.

    Too bad these did not arrive in time to slap on the bags..it would have been the ultimate “mommy coup”…like the time I took grocery store fried chicken to the church social but not until I switched it out of the greasy bag into a cute basket and pierre deux looking cloth napkin atop!  So thanks Tiny Prints..I DON’T really need these stickers next week..oh well, I guess I can use them next year, his name will still be “Drew” after all…unless he decides to start going by Andrew! I suppose the dinosaur would have sort of ruined the beautiful pink cookie anyway..better no cards or stickers and they could all think they just came from some special Valentine angel…actually they did!

    All of this to say, I am sure the Nester is busy today too but we will be back later in the weekend or next week to share her favorite colors and wrap this thing up!

    Oh and I must mention, tomorrow, THIS doll baby turns 7 months…I can’t even believe..

    Happy Birthday Henry…you have brought so much love and joy into our family! You are our precious Valentine this year and always!

    Next on our color train we visit Joetta Moulden of Shelterstyle.com.  Whether you realize it or not, you have seen Joetta’s work as a stylist in Better Homes & Garden, Country Home, Mary Englebreit Home Companion, This Old House and others! She is also a longtime columnist for the popular publication Houston House & Home. Her amazing business, Shelterstyle (I love that name..so clever), focuses on helping clients “use what they have” and rearrange rooms for maximum use and beauty..and she was doing it long before HGTV and other people jumped on the bandwagon.  Her father was a AIA Church Architect. Joetta is a natural and a class act to boot!

    Many of you ask how/why I was featured by BHG…well the answer is Joetta Moulden..she scouted my house and encouraged me to do the shoot and she continued to encourage me when my business began to shift from ‘painting and selling junk’ and casually helping friends to actually taking on real-life clients!  Joetta is generous with her time and knowledge and it is such a pleasure to feature her on my blog.

    This first photo is from Joetta’s own Houston home…this was her daughter’s room, she recently married so Joetta has converted the room into a lovely sitting area. She notes she is still looking for the perfect rug!

    {Photo by Joetta Moulden}

    Like many designers, Joetta is partial to Benjamin Moore colors. She likes Nantucket Gray by Benjamin Moore, HC 111. “This is a lovely rich muddy green.  I like the Historic Color Collection that Benjamin Moore offers–the colors are soft and muddied up– not circus-strident,” she says. Joetta used this color in the new sitting room pictured above and says it would work great in a dining room, living room and even an entryway.

    She also recommends Alexandria Beige, by Benjamin Moore, HC 77. It would be great on living room walls Joetta says…she used here to update kitchen cabinets!

    A great brown Joetta suggest could be  used anywhere you want a stronger color or trim is Davenport Tan, by Benjamin Moore, HC 76. Here it is on a fireplace mantel.

    If you are interested in a lovely taupey wall color that can be used anywhere, Joetta suggests Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore, HC-172. Here it is in a living room:

    {photos by Janet Lenzen}

    When it comes to whites, Joetta’s favorite  soft white trim color is Benjamin Moore White Dove ( ready-mix). If a bright white trim is needed,  Super White by Benjamin Moore (ready-mix).

    Someone mentioned in the previous comments about non-white ceilings, Joetta is a big fan of this..in fact she is the first person I ever heard state the theory that white ceilings really don’t make the ceiling look higher, in fact it “stunts” your view..so paint them a few shades lighter than the walls or have the ceiling mixed “half strength” but reconsider the standard “bright white ceiling paint.”

    Thanks Joetta for all of the wonderful neutrals and to round out, here is her favorite RED.. Benjamin Moore Spanish Red #1301. Just in time for Valentine’s Day!

    Today we are going to hear from two of my favorite bloggers, Melissa from the beautiful blog, The Inspired Room and Seleta from the very chic but always down to earth blog, Simply Seleta.

    When asked about color this is what Melissa had to say, “I have so many favorites. Paint colors are tricky, as you know. You can have a favorite that will NOT look good in everyone’s room. The lighting, existing finishes and things you have in the room can make a color look entirely different in someone else’s house.”  Good point..so take all of our suggestions this week with a grain of salt…remember to take in to account if you get bright sun or no sun or have porches covering the area outside of your windows..It makes a difference, I know from experience.

    Melissa says that with that warning in mind, her favorites are everything on the “Restrained Gold” card from Sherwin Williams (SW). “The shades on that card are yellow without that lemon pastel look.” She adds that most people she recommends use these colors end up very happy with the choice.

    Melissa also likes “Antique White” from Sherwin Williams, but she has it custom mixed by Benjamin Moore because she prefers Benjamin Moore (BM) paint quality. It is a wonderful creamy white that she used all over her last house. See more discussion on this color in her post here which also has the formula for having it made at Benjamin Moore.

    Thanks Melissa! {Image from her kitchen!}

    When Seleta from Simply Seleta responded to my questions about color I love how she replied…with lots of information and categories!..that girl is so organized..she must be, she has four children and a busy life! {Yes that is actually her, isn’t she beautiful and even better, she is so nice and fun!}

    Seleta says her Favorite whites include
    Navajo by Benjamin Moore (BM).  She says “it is creamy enough without any green undertones, yet still crisp and fresh looking.  I painted my cabinets this in our Georgia home and still love it!” She also suggests Niveous, also by BM, because ”this one has a tinge of a yellow undertone.  It is my current wall color in our beach house, and is perfect for a home that gets very little direct light.  It’s a classic!”

    Soft + Subdued Colors:
    Seleta suggests Dunmore Cream [Ben Moore HC 29] she says it is the color of butter and is great as a neutral if you really want to warm up a room.  “It’s as classic as cashmere and pearls!” She also loves Oatmeal (BM 268).

    Seleta loves green and has this to say:
    Golden Delicious [BM 390]… just painted the backs of my white shelves this color and paired with Hable’s bead pattern - it’s edgy and delicious.  Great color for adding some punch in a space.”
    Moselle [Duron ?]  “…this is definitely a secret weapon color.  If you’re looking for a murky soft green, this one is beautiful paired with gold or yellow and cream.  It’s a color of sheer elegance.”
    Sweet Daphne [Ben Moore 529] “…oh I love this fertile green, it’s just like a fresh spring leaf  It’s the color of my four year old boy’s room and he loves it.  I paired it with a bright blue to add a masculine touch.  The best part about this shade of green is that it has quite a bit of versatility.”

    Thanks Seleta..I just had to share her own words..she is so descriptive..both of these ladies are great writers and amazing bloggers…be sure and check them out!

    This is a topic we all like to discuss ..the elusive perfect paint color..much like the perfect pair of jeans right???!  Always looking for the one that might change our life..make the bedroom more serene, brighten the kitchen, bring the whole room together etc..You get the picture, we care.  So I have recruited some of my favorite people to share with us their color favorites this week… let’s get started.

    Tomorrow we will have Seleta from this wonderful style blog as well as Melissa from The Inspired Room!  Wednesday we will have tips from my dear friend Joetta of Shelterstyle and later in the week we will hear from the Nester and last but certainly not least, Joni from Cote de Texas.  So hold on to your paint brushes and get ready to take notes.

    Aside from this great line up, I hope y’all will share YOUR favorite colors and tips in the comments..this is the time to de-lurk! I want this to be a wonderful conversation about paint and how it can so easily change our rooms!

    To start us off I am going to give my favorite colors.  I did not pull images to illustrate except for this first one : STONE 2 Laura Ashley from Lowe’s.  I apologize for the glare.  Looks like a sad color huh?? You are thinking, she is nuts…that looks like primer! But this room is tiny, and I knew I wanted to layer a lot of fabric and bring a lot in… and I know from many past uses, this color provides a great canvas to start with. So here is a fresh coat of Stone 2 BEFORE the room was loaded…pretty blah..so so, its ok…I means it’s barely there right?

    and  AFTER with furniture and accessories…see the difference layers make…the paint looks darker with more white in the room. If I had gone darker to start with it would have not ended with the serene soft feel I wanted.  The point is keep in mind (of course!) what you will be bringing in..don’t just choose the color because it is pretty (I know this is obvious but i have to say) Also really put your swatches up near different shades of white and similar colors to really get an idea of its “true identity.” For instance, the contrast with the white white tree amd chair slipcover show there really is a whisper of beige in the paint…just enough for a tiny nursery.

    I hate to ramble about Stone 2 but I want to explain a little more about this light neutral. Of course this is Baby Henry’s nursery. I get more emails asking about this color.  It just looks like off white linen…and unless you have white white trim (my trim is all extra white from SW) it will not even look beige/linen color it will just come off as “off white” or “antique white”..so it is not a rich color..similar but not even as rich as SW “swiss coffee” but our home is very small and I used it in the entry originally, the living room, the nursery and the hallway…it is my default color..and it works.  My theory is older homes that might have shabby/imperfect doors, cabinets, trim..well they look fresh if painted WHITE WHITE… if I was building  new construction I would still use a fairly clean and bright white because I like it but probably not EXTRA White from SW..does this make sense? Joetta will have some trim color suggestions for us as well so stay tuned.  Bottom line, my home is older, woodwork not perfect so I used lots of WHITE WHITE paint on older cabinets, wainscot etc to brighten and enlarge spaces and it works..LAURA ASHLEY STONE 2 is a great light neutral color for walls to work with white white wood/trim in this kind of situation. whewww..hope that made some sense…if you live in an older home, it probably did!

    My other favorites..pictured in the top photo are from the Sherwin Williams strip with SW Urban Putty and SW Khaki Shade..my master bedroom is Urban Putty (you can see on my press page article).  It is a great color..works with a lot…these colors were not on the big SW color deck for years but they are back on the cute little fan deck!  So glad to see my old friends taken off the shelf because they are oldies but goodies. Of course they could always be mixed but I love being able to get a current sample swatch strip (or four or five!) Also pictured is what I think is a new color from SW??? Does anyone know..it is called SW Silvermist..very pretty ..reminds me of Restoration’s Silver Sage but lighter.  And while we are talking about SW, be sure and check out their online tool..the color visualizer!  So cool, you can even scan in your photos and then choose colors, click and drag and “paint” your rooms, trim, ceilings..very helpful!  And if you don’t want to upload photos you just use one of their stock room photos.  I am sure most of you know about this but just making sure! And no I dont endorse or prefer SW…I use it a lot and I obviously love some of their colors but I personally think Benjamin Moore has a better range..we’ll see what the experts says as the week progresses!  Check back often!

    {edited to say:  I can’t believe I forgot another wonderful color, SW Hopsack, it is a yummy, rich caramel color..I have used in bathrooms (including own and I love it 5 years later), dining rooms and  an entry…it is good!}
