As I ponder my master bedroom redo, I’ve been shopping around for upholstered headboards.  In fact, this is the one I’ve have had in mind for the longest…

sigh.  Isn’t is lovely? from Williams-Sonoma Home.  not cheap.  Sure, I could put forth some effort and have a workroom construct it and make it happen for a better price but at this point in my life, I am all about ease and budget so I am thinking between this…

the Riley headboard from Pottey Barn, original I know ha ha, but you can’t beat the price, even with a workroom or designer discounts..and it comes straight to my door.  I would do it in the natural linen. I love the slipcover idea so I can wash BUT I also love the nailhead option below, similar price point, from Ballard Designs.

The Camden, untufted I think, love the nailhead.  But I have two little boys and this isn’t a slipcover..you just can’t get the nailhead and slipcover wrapped up in one, gotta choose. oh well. Here is the Camden in tufted, they even offer tufted AND nailhead but that seems too much!

I keep hearing that JCPenney and Target have great upholstered headboard options but I haven’t found them…the fabrics seem limited to micro suede or similar and the headboard doesn’t go to the floor, stops at the top of the mattress, know what I mean??? Maybe I am just not finding them??

What about you, do you like upholstered headboards???  Nailhead trim?  Tufted?

We’ve made all of our kids headboards….we cut out the design that we wanted for our daughter’s and then covered it in batting and fabric…very cute. And, we made our boys’ out of different size planks of wood and then painted and distressed them…

It makes such a difference in the personality of a room!

I have been looking at those too. I dream of them really. I like the nailhead trim as well, but I think with 2 boys you are better going with upholstered(haha).

I’m not sure where in Texas your located, but I had a wonderful woman in Cedar Park make me a beautiful upholstered headboard in a king size for $180.

Lovely. To get a “faux nailhead look” you could sew a tight line of tortoise shell or brass buttons on the slipcover. Just a thought.

I would go with tufted & nailheads…but if I had a little one as you do…try Best Slipcover Company’s slipcovered headboard…

I just love upholstered headboards I have two in our home. Both are tufted. I’m sure you are familiar with Mitchell Gold & Bob Williams. There is a wonderful outlet for Mitchell Gold here in NC where I live. The prices are great. Mitchell Gold makes furniture for Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware etc. I purchased our headboards, slipcovered sectional, dining chairs, slipcovered rocker for our daughter’s nursery and some wonderful ottomans from the outlet. Pricing is about half of what you would pay retail. If you would like their contact info. email me and I be glad to send it to you.

Love upholstered headboards. My daughter has the tufted Camden. Just last week I mentioned to her we could always make a slipcover for it – why not try, ya know! I have made my own many years ago and it came out beautiful, but lots of work.

I love headboards (slipcovered or nailhead with a cool shape), but my theory is don’t settle. If kids are keeping you from getting the one of your dreams, wait. If money is the only obstacle, wait. I’ve always been amazed at how you come across just the right thing at the right time if you wait. In the mean time, do something clever for under $300…a mantle, door, scrap wood that you paint/distress. Just my two cents! I’m still waiting for my perfect headboard! xo,Linsey

I knew I loved your style! I am hoping to get to our master bedroom someday and I have these in the back of my mind. I love tufted or nailhead…maybe depends on what else you have in mind? I think the nailhead has a more “sleek” look, the tufted more traditional. Our swing arm lamps and tables are pretty sleek in our bedroom, so I would pair it with the more traditional tufted headboard so it won’t seem too stiff.

Sears has a tufted headboard by Eddie Bauer I think – check it out. It’s out of a natural linen color. I went to look at it and it’s not bad for the money.

holly…i researched upholstered headboards for a few months….we ended up going with the camden tufted from ballard (i had a 15% coupon from house beautiful magazine)…it should be here in about 4 more weeks…..i’ll let you know :)

some of the places i looked: HSN, Target, JC Penney, William Sonoma, Pottery Barn, Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, Ballard, Restoration, and any other store that came up in google :) happy shopping!

Love them! And they break up the wood monotiny (sp?) in a master bedroom. I’ve been looking for one for a long time…actually Target online has tons and they look pretty darn nice! Also, Bernhardt has a few that are beautiful and suprisingly not too expensive. My friend has one from Ballards and it seems a little on the small size to me, not what I expected when I saw it in the catalog. I prefer nailheads to tufting for a headboard-I think it gives in a cleaner look.
    Have fun deciding!

Go to Furniture Land South’s website and check out the Stanley Furniture upholstered headboard… very nice! Not sure about the price but sometimes they have free delivery!

I also live in NC and frequent the Mitchell Gold & Bob Williams factory outlet. It is like heaven to me. I got a Williams Sonoma Home upholstered headboard there for an unreal price. They often have sales giving an additional 20% off of their already reduced prices. The outlet is located in a furniture outlet mall so there are tons of other shops to check out while there. If you’re ever in North Carolina and can get to Hickory, it’s definitely worth the trip!

I love those! I like the tufted ones best. My girlfriend does custom ones and they aren’t that expensive either. I like that you can change them easily if you get tired with a slip cover.

Hello! I love your blog and designs! I wanted to make a quick comment…we purchased the Camden headboard (untufted) last year…It took me about 6 months to make the decision to buy, as I hem-hawed about choices…my husband is the one who said “Just buy it if you love it!”…anyways, even after measuring with the dimensions from the website, we were surprised at how low the headboard is. In fact, we were not able to use the legs that came with the headboard, my husband attached 2×4′s (which I have yet to paint a cream color to match!). I believe you mentioned wanting a headboard that went to the floor…the Camden does not. All in all, I would order it again, we absolutely love it. I just wanted to point out those factors in case they helped your decision!

I have 4 boys. Free advice. If it can get ruined , broken, dirty with boys around it will. Go with the slipcover. (but boys sure are sweet!!:)

I love this post! It just helped me with a similar design challenge I’m working on over here! Thanks a bunch, Holly. :)

It’s SO easy to make your own upholstered headboard and very inexpensive. For $50, I made a king size headboard with cream burlap and French nailhead trim. I cut the shape out of butcher paper and then had my husband cut it out of a piece of wood from Home Depot. Then I covered it with quilting batting and then fabric. Once I hammered in the nailhead trim, my husband attached it to our bedframe. We love it and I get tons of compliments. If I get tired of the burlap, I could either pull out the trim and recover it or just make a slipcover.

We have the Stanley Furniture “Louis Louis Wing Man Bed”…it is upholstered in a beautiful light tan fabric with small wing back and nailhead trim. We love it. There used to be a Stanley outlet in Martinsville, VA where the furniture is made…but I believe they moved their outlet to NC….
