    Some of you may recall a series of posts I did last year on decorating with photographs and family items.  I was pregnant at the time and pretty emotional about the topic, I think I droned on and on about how this could be done in a tasteful way and why it is important.  I asked others designers and bloggers their thoughts and really tried to capture this topic.  I don’t know if I even scratched the surface but I have found a source.  Monica Rich Kosann.  She “gets it” and more. She is an amazing fine art portrait photographer, jewelry designer and CURATOR of family memories!  She has been blessed with an amazing talent in this area. When I heard about her new book, Living With What You Love, I knew I had to discuss here on the blog.  I love this topic so much and Monica has put together an amazing source on this subject. She has captured the importance and beauty of living with the things we love whether they be family photos or collections.

     I love what Monica, pictured above with a huge photo canvas,  says in the forward of her book:

    The fine art of family is far more than taking photographs and hanging them on the wall, or finding the right place for an old heirloom. Each of us has the power to transform our personal living space into an area where family memories are kept alive, where we pay respect to our values and accomplishments, express our tastes, communicate our enthusiasms, and create memories and experiences that friends, relatives, and children will forever associate with the place we call home.

    Wow. This is powerful.  So not only is this a beautiful book, like everything Monica creates, but it also has heart and soul.  And I love that.  And it’s not just about photographs and heirlooms she also covers ideas for display in public spaces, stairwells and intimate spaces like closets and tablescapes.

    This book is comprehensive and a great source for designers as well as homeowners and photography and antique lovers.  As fans of her jewelry and home items at Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus know, Monica  is a skilled artisan at mixing photos and heirlooms to create unique pieces…you see this in the book and more. Where else can you find one volume that will give so many display ideas on groupings, types of frames and more?!

    For instance, the book shows Monica’s office in her own home [pictured below].  She had this cork applied like wallpaper.  We visited recently and I asked her about sticking pins through the cork into the sheetrock. She said “yes it’s a commitment” so this isn’t a temporary treatment but it is very cool.

    So if you are like me and love photography, antiques and collections, you must check out this new book and also Monica’s website, www.thefineartoffamily.com, it is full of inspiration and beauty for the everyday. And I’m hoping we can twist her arm and get her to show us more nooks and crannies of her lovely home in the future..it looks amazing! Just like Monica and her artist’s eye.

    The Design Team has not shown or discussed much going on with Hyacinth’s room over at the Pioneer Woman blog but we’ve been working and forming a plan.  Then America voted on the paint color for a wall that may or may not get painted…So its been interesting and well frankly, I am a little scared to show this, what if there is a revolt, ha! But here it is y’all, ideas for Hyacinth’s living room! Our vision..texture, pattern, lots of art and photography and classic modern pieces but pulled together in a casual and eclectic way.  Remember, the Art of Improbable Mish Mash… This is just the big picture/brainstorming/jumping off point..soon she will show the big and I do mean dramatic mantle wall drawing…it is going to look so different…so let this tide you over and check back soon…very soon we promise.  In the meantime, see what kind of funky little things you can find in the board…

    Oh and Hyacinth and I recorded a podcast at the beginning of our adventure…before we emailed constantly and talked by phone daily. I’m not near as nervous now when we talk . Not much is revealed in the podcast except (1.) Hyacinth is funny (2.) ummmm, I think it’s all ok!  Just click below and enjoy! It’s not earth shattering but it is fun to hear Hyacinth talk about her room.

    Well after much debate (which I appreciate..thanks for the input), I ordered the Riley headboard from here. People it is large, but I like it. And Henry likes it. Pictured below before I even put the linen slip on…

    I did not order the Ballard nailhead headboard because I was afraid it would be too small but if you have a king bed, live in a smaller home that doesn’t have a huge bedroom, or tall ceilings, you might consider the Ballard version. Just sharing some knowledge;; The Riley is very comfy to lean against while blogging  I must say and I love the linen slipcover and nice tall shape.  And it does go to the floor which I like. More on the bedroom changes coming soon. Love the clean slate.

    I hope you have a great week. I have a wonderful new book to share with you this week and PROGRESS over at the Pioneer Woman!

    I am excited to show y’all the cute little light Camille retrofitted for over her kitchen sink!  She converted this little basket into something so unique and inexpensive.  I am sure she will tell us more in the comments. Looks like she just drilled a hole in the bottom of the basket and inserted a basic little light kit! (notice the glass shade that came with the light, not needed, we have a basket!)

    {ta da!}

    All she needs to finish it off  is a cute window treatment..I am thinking roman shade. She sews so  I know she can pull of anything we she decides on..mainly we just need to find an adorable fabric and we don’t need much so it can even be a splurge..loving that!

    Love this lattice chippendale fabric from fabric.com that I showed you on the previous kitchen post. Or this deer valley lodge from the same source. I pulled together a few other choices on the design board below!

    camilles kitchen
    So there are some ideas for windows and rug. Do you have any suggestions? … I think something larger and with some black. If she finds a bold rug she likes then she can do a simple linen shade on the window..maybe edge in black. I would love for her to take off a lower cabinet door somewhere for a fabric cover/little drape in linen. (Hello, It’s Complicated comes out on dvd next week..I keep thinking about the linen drape in that kitchen!)  Just an idea! Her husband Kyle is rolling his eyes as he reads!  He just adores me;;

    Right now I am enjoying these things around my house….

    Fresh lettuce and herbs from this friend..she amazes me what she can grow!

    Little flowers in my windowsill from a certain 5 year old boy!

    And decor wise…

    This tableskirt from Beadboard Upcountry in Brenham, Texas…I picked it up today and it has officially kicked off the master bedroom redo…Ralph Lauren (ca. 1998) has left the building people, I was having trouble giving him up but this lovely linen skirt is helping me with our separation anxiety…more on the headboard decision and other fabrics coming soon. . .

    Lastly, these lights are up and loving them…they are different but I like them!

    OK that is it for now..just wanted to share some spring fun around here..the little things, whether they are flowers from a sweet boy or pretty tablecloth… well they all make the dirty dishes and lack of sleep a little more fun and bearable, at least for me…

    What is brightening your daily life these days????

    My friend Camille has done so much work to her kitchen, I am amazed and love it all! The house was built in the 1960s and according to Camille, it looked like it (too bad we don’t have an original picture to show but I take her word)!  She did a great job painting the dated cabinets a fresh green and the walls a buttery yellow an adding new appliances and hardware on the cabinets.

    Camille said “when we moved in the cabinets were dingy yellow beige (65+years old) and there was a wall oven where the “pantry” is now. We cut up the cabinets to install a slide in stainless gas range…the jewel of my kitchen.  Also had my husband install a lit potrack above and ripped out the vent-a-hood!”

    Camille didn’t want to invest in solid surface counters, but wanted something besides formica, so went she went with tile. She had it installed all the way up the backsplash and on a diagonal and has been very happy with the decision.

    On to other areas..She says “the fridge and dishwasher were black and I painted them stainless paint!”  Did y’all hear that??  She painted her appliances with stainless paint!

    I love it, this is the woman who taught me so well about “hack and sew” long before I had heard of mistreatments..the stainless paint is so her! So she was almost content but then Camille found the piece of furniture  below to go where the table and chairs are shown above (this is the area directly across from the kitchen sink) and give the feel of extended cabinets.  The family eats its meals in the nearby dining room so this area wasn’t really used and she wanted more space to store DISHES..she is a dish freak.  So she drug this home.  Her husband was so excited.

     and after, in place of the table and chairs!

    The sideboard looks great finished but it needed more heft above, I bluntly told her and she received it in love (I think she actually already had plans for more). I also suggested a pop of orangey red in an accessory..I was thinking “Keep Calm” poster but she just happend to have the tea towel you see framed below…even better. Just give her a day or two and voila! New shelving and light and vintage tea towel. That’s my girl! Oh and work, lots of elbow grease!

    Yes she installed a new little light too.  Yep, she does wiring (just wait until you see the over the sink project)! But don’t hate her, she is kind of a slob notice below, she doesn’t  even shut her cabinet doors..ha!

    Painting the sideboard really made her want to paint all of the cabinets but I convinced her to just do the lower! So the cabinets, once all green, now have black on the bottom..I love how it works with the sideboard and black in the appliances. All black would have been to dark in my humble opinion.

     …and we have to replace that rooster rug, again in love..I am thinking something larger.  Stay tuned for more this week on Camille’s darling kitchen. She has the cutest lighting project for over the sink..can’t wait for y’all to see.  And I have fabric suggestions for the windows and rug ideas too! I would love to see a pattern like this on the window or floor. {From housefabric.com}

    She is also going to give us tips for painting, what type she likes and other really technical information.

    Have you painted your cabinets?? Any tips?

    I just love typography and words and vintage signs, nothing compares when it comes to drama, size, color and personality..whether you have cottage interior or more contemporary..I’ve noticed them for years and this year at Round Top I noticed  the authentic ones are getting more and more expensive!  Of course, there are some great reproductions out there but if you find the real deal, hold on to it tight!

    {Country Living}

    I just adore this one..red and a cow! The modern light and stark whites keep the sign from being too rustic.  I would love to find an old Sunday school or hymn sign or something from an old cafe/kitchen/food related…  Do you have a vintage sign?? Where did you get it?  Where are you displaying your sign?..

    Pictured above is one of my favorite vintage signs in all of Texas..too bad they won’t let me have it, maybe because they still use it!

    I was a part of rescuing an old grocery store sign here in my little town recently (not near as dramatic as it sounds, just mentioned to someone who cared;;)..I am such a preservationist that way..ha!  Anyway, so glad a good steward has that piece of local history safely in storage! Be sure and stop and pick up any pieces of social history you see laying around…these old signs are decorative and often have meaning too!

    Our friends the Younts family, or “Yountens” as my son Drew likes to call them, are very special people. The mom, Joy, helped me pray faithfully for our firstborn. I mean, down on the floor with me to pray. They are that kind of friends and people. And they are expecting their fifth child this summer. Faith, their oldest daughter will FINALLY have a sister. We are all beyond excited they are having another girl.

    So when Mama “Yountens” emailed to say “should I order this Liberty of London crib bedding from Target?”

    …I about jumped through my computer…”YES! ” Do I want to play with Liberty of London bedding and products for a baby girl?! “YES, I am in!”.. Sooo, while I of course don’t want this room to look like a Target commercial and we won’t use all of the patterned products below, this is a great jumping off point for this precious baby girl’s new room…baby girl younts
    Ideas for the nursery include..

    • use the Liberty platter as wall art and hang white plates around it??
    • use a teapot/teatime theme..hello!… Liberty patterns, London, England, little girls….. we don’t have to use the PB decals shown..could make our own art or use teapots from the target collection or in mama’s collection..displayed on a shelf or dresser…
    • use scrap paper to make teapot art using basic teapot silhouttes on painted canvas
    • you know I am looking for the perfect etsy print. Will likely come from here..one of my faves!
    • {print from Sarah + Abraham}

    • mom or sister’s vintage baby dress on hooks or vintage hangers OR a darling Liberty dress…they are sold out for the most part but don’t doubt if Auntie Holly sees one (or 2 or 3) at her Target she will be snatching up..i just wish they made the rain boots in toddler sizes!
    • adding in a 1/2 a yard or less of additional ACCENT fabrics to keep it from being too
      “packaged”…

    …simply add a pillow, basic quilt (with minky dot in one side) in an additional print to mix it up..a geometric will add some modern freshness..not using baby prints helps elevate the look so much…or simply decoupaging a piece to a canvas board for simple art and more pattern! we don’t want it all to be Liberty..just all girl!

    God bless you baby girl and entire Yountens family.we love you!

    Be sure and check out the most recent post about Design Team Hyacinth on the Home and Garden channel over at the Pioneer Woman. Today, Hyacinth will introduce Layla from the Lettered Cottage as well as our ideas for paint color in one of her zones!  Oh and by the way, the black suggestion is for chalkboard paint..in fact, any of the colors could be mixed as chalkboard paint.  We think this would be fun for her family!  See what you think..she even wants you to vote!
