    I’ve been working on several nursery projects lately and while shopping I’ve come across some yummy eye candy. Like the SOFT knit dolls above from blabla..they are so fun! And this crib, from Layla Grace.  I LOVE Jenny Lind cribs but I have to admit I like this too.

    Or this fabric by Jennifer Paganelli at Sew Mama Sew!  Not your traditional nursery fabric but I love this print and think it would look great on drapes or a crib bumper.

    Oh and this slide by IKEA…so cute.

    What is your favorite item right now to use when decorating for kids?

    My friend Carli just built a new home. She has used a lot of great ideas including salvaged beadboard in several areas, like here, the backsplash of her craft room. I love it!

    This is the real deal.  Old salvaged beadboard. I love how it looks with the fresh white cabinets and metal counters. Aren’t all of the colors wonderful…she especialy loves the turqouise! I agree!  Can’t wait to show you more of her home in the future.

    Oh and aren’t those huge scissors great?!  This really illustrates how wonderful an oversized object looks on top of cabinets or really anywhere in a room..so many of use struggle with those awkward areas.  I bet she bought the scissors at Canton..she is an expert at shopping the Canton Flea Market!!! Carli is so talented..she used to have a flower shop in my hometown!

    Thanks for letting us take a peak in your craft room my friend! Enjoy the new house!

    Recently I was honored to help spruce up the Children’s Ministry Coordinator’s office at our church.  Debbie is a sweet friend and does so much for our kids I wanted something really special in the room to encourage her and others when in the space.  We found the perfect source.  Red letter words

    {Yes, I immediately took it out of the box to take a photo!}

    Debbie really enjoys and gains a lot of wisdom from the D6 conference held each year and that verse is really the mission statement of what she hopes to equip and encourage parents with as we raise children.  I love Debbie because she is more “big picture” and less about crafts and activities.  So Dee at Red Letter Words made this fab canvas with Deuteronomy 6 and it looks amazing in Debbie’s office.  Another church member is making a linen window treatment and there are a few frames to hang and then maybe I can show you a peek! Thanks Debbie for all you do for so many people.

    Recently a reader emailed me interested in the idea of adding vintage character to new construction..on a budget!  Of course the idea of building a new “old home” is common and but often means custom.  Custom for the most part means a generous budget.  With building costs up everywhere, the luxury of custom homes is well, more and more a luxury. Like this kitchen. wow.

    Many young families want a unique home but can’t necessarily afford the custom beadboard cabinet doors for the fridge! Luckily there are so many great blogs at our fingertips that have DIY suggestions and fresh ideas for adding character and interest to suburban living and new construction. So that is my first suggestion if you want to infuse character to a newer home.

    • READ BLOGS.  There are so many wonderful blogs like Lettered Cottage, Inspired Home, the Nesting Place, Restyled Home and  Young House Love that are writing wonderful posts on this very topic. Please share other blogs suggestions in the comments..we are all constantly looking for fresh blogs to enjoy.
    • BEADBOARD yes we’ve been talking about this a lot lately and it just works, in both old and new homes. In kitchens, baths, hallways, mudrooms, kids rooms..you name it. This is a must in a new old home. Notice how this bath has such a vintage old house feel even though all of the fixtures appear brand spanking new!  Beadboard..of course the pedestals sinks help too!;;  My mom used to have a collection of old bathtubs and pedestals sinks..but that is another post!

    • TALL CEILINGS skip the funky tray ceilings and cathedrals..just plain and tall…tall ceilings make even the tiny children’s room just feel fab.
    • GOOD TRIMWORK-even just 1×4 or stock trim..maybe adding square medallions at corners.., it doesn’t take a custom millwork..you can find things via catalogs and stock items to beef up trim around doors in main living areas and maybe even throughout the home..just plan ahead and be ready!

    • OLD DOORS..not every door in your house but at least 1 or even a few..not even super old but something with some character for a special spot, a hallway closet or pantry..if you know the sizes before the builder starts it sure helps..or skip doors in some areas and add curtains..Especially fun is a an old screen door on a pantry like Layla at the Lettered Cottage did in her dining room pictured below.

    My mom had a picture out of Country Living illustrating this idea in a kitchen on a pantry..it was a corner pantry..anyone remember that image??..I wish i had that tear sheet..she kept it from years.  Can you tell this “new old house” is a concept my mom loves..she built two homes this way..one very custom, one more on a budget.  So many of these ideas are from homes I lived in or ideas I heard my mom discuss. OK, back to our list.

    • DOOR KNOBS and HARDWARE..you can shop around online…Van Dykes and D LAWLESS and find glass doorknobs or from junk stores..not every room but maybe a powder room bath door. Just to add a little interest. And for kitchen cabinets think bin pulls and glass knobs…

    • ACCESSORIES like an old sign or letters like those pictured above and/or FURNITURE like primitive table in the entry, or a mish mash of old chairs around a “fancy” dining table, etc..can lend so much character and set the tone in your new home..I could go on and on of course, such as..
    • OLD MANTLES either on a fireplace or just as furniture. I saw this one at Urban Market in Houston recently…

    • LESS CARPET We all love wood floors of course, laminates don’t bother me, shop around and see what you can find or consider stained concrete..  tall ceilings and no carpet instantly give an old house feel I think…

    {Schoolhouse light from Restoration Hardware}

    • LIGHTING and other fixtures whether it’s old school house lights in the kitchen, a vintage chandelier over the bed or dining table, farm lights outside by garage or backdoor..a few well thought out lights, not necessarily$$$$, will go a long way..I know people who have saved lights for years to use in new homes!
    • EXTERIOR skip the brick if possible except for steps, sidewalk or patio.  Wood or similar siding obviously gives a more cottage feel with character or better yet consider PAINTED BRICK.  Oh how I love painted brick…that’s another post in itself!

    Last but not least, BE CAREFUL-DON’T OVERDO. Be careful not to go overboard on the vintage elements. One old door here, a bathroom with beadboard, a neat old sign over the kitchen table, etc..but not EVERY element in the home must be one of kind. Just a little effort really will go a long way and you can always add things as you find.

    Just remember, character doesnt have to mean custom (aka $$$)!!! Just some planning, thought and creativity! What have you done in your new home to lend character and vintage feel?

    Oh my!  Look what arrived in the mail this week from Emily at Jones Design Company. . .

    Yes, I immediately ripped into the box and then took their picture!

    Thank you so much Emily, you totally captured my boys.

    {Henry Brooks, age 9 months}

    {Andrew Payne, age 5}

    I have a silhouette of Drew at age 3 from Karl Johnson and planned on getting one of Henry at the same age but I am thrilled to have these capturing my boys at this stage!  And the size is so cute..12″ square.  Oh and the background. . . french book pages! Of course I love  anything with old book pages..so add in my kids and silhouettes..its a lovefest for sure! And made by the hands of another mama no less. Very special. I found the perfect spot for them in our master bedroom. . . I’d never had anything in this spot before but they fit and look great in this little space.

    Introducing the black from the silhouettes is making me love the black armoire in my master bedroom even more…it is directly across from the bed and I was ready to paint it grey after recently painting the marcia brady dresser blue.  BUT adding the silhouettes has made me like the black paint again..also I changed out the items on top..I had old suitcases up top and I love vintage suitcases but this arrangement is slowly taking shape.

    I think I want to collect more loving cups and loving the brownie camera, would like to add another 2 or 3 of those  although maybe not all in this one area..its getting crazy. But I am sort of loving it too!

    Thanks again Emily for the lovely silhouettes of my boys..Y’all be sure and check out the Jones Design blog..her kitchen is so cute and you won’t believe what she is doing in her new home office..you do NOT want to miss!

    On Sunday I headed down to Houston for the Urban Market event.  It was muddy and hot but worth the effort.  I noticed pops of red everywhere!

    And this lovely grouping of coral. I saw a lot of coral, turtle shells, starfish and the like….

    I love how these books look all tied up in this red bin.

    And of course I saw some things for my boys….more red! I think that tractor seat would make an adorable desk “chair” . . . but I can also see a little noggin getting busted;(  I think this was the Seed Box booth, one of my favorites at Round Top. Gotta love the baseballs in mass.

    I did notice more than red, I also found a great lighting vendor, Eric Brown of Century of Lighting .

    Love these bare bulb lights, I can so see one over a utility sink in a laundry room!  Or an upstairs bath (with beadboard walls) Ok back to the show…enough daydreaming.

    Check out these burlap “rope” lights (same lighting booth) . . . . very dramatic..a little birdie told me a shop owner with a booth at Antiques On Dunlavy bought the pair so  if you live in Houston and are lucky, you just might find them there…so unique.

    But the highlight of the show was not the “stuff” but seeing friends like Melisse Campbell, you may remember I blogged about her amazing prints at the La Bahia show back during Round Top, and I also got to meet up with Linsey of LLH Designs. It is a joy to know such nice people with similar interests.

    Even if it is muddy.

    Yesterday, I cruised through TWO Target stores looking for Liberty of London plates for this nursery.  What did I see??  yep..Keep Calm and Carry On items! I just had to laugh..good ol’  Target.

    The canvas prints were okay but the pillows I’m not sure about….maybe cute for a teen’s room or dorm? Hey maybe a good graduation gift?! I think you can actually buy a print on etsy for less than the canvas at Target ..but hey I’m not knocking..I am sure many are excited…just please remember, as much as I love Target, you can buy this at Etsy from a printmaker or similar and get something less mass produced..if you care, if you don’t that is fine too..

    Notice on the trays, the wording is different and there are forks in the crown!

    What do you think?  Will you be snatching up these items at Target, snubbing the whole trend, getting rid of your existing Keep Calm print or ordering from Etsy????

    We’ve been talking about beadboard this week and the Nester has been talking about board and batten.  It’s made me think about and appreciate all of the wood walls in my own home, neither beadboard nor board and batten, mine are all either good ol’ deep v-groove or bare wood walls that I’ve painted like shown in the photo above of the upstairs guest room.  Some of the walls downstairs were dark stained knotty pine and I committed the wood sin and painted it all! It is all so durable and perfect for life with little boys..especially in this narrow hallway between our bedrooms. Just imagine the toy cars that go through this space!  Also notice how the wood flooring changes from oak to pine..funny I think, doesn’t bother me a bit!

    I painted it all Sherwin-Williams extra white and I have loved it..I did semi-gloss OIL based..does anyone even use oil anymore?? This was 10 years ago thus the knicks and love.

    It is also in my kitchen, around the mini penisula, breakfast area, and as backsplash…

    And up my stairwell..these stairs had green shag carpet and yes I refinished them and removed all of the carpet glue..they are not shiny and perfect but I love them just the way they are…I think these risers are screaming to be “numbered” like those shown here from HGTV’s Sarah’s house.

    Once you get to the stop of the stairs you see the bedroom in the very top  photo and then turn left into a small bath which is right next (and I do mean CLOSE proximity..this upstairs is tiny) to my office.

    The entire house, built in 1941 before the war, was originally clad in cheesecloth and wallpaper. Downstairs we simply covered over that with 1/4″ sheetrock…the historian in me LOVES knowing that cheesecloth and wallpaper are still under there BUT upstairs we ripped the wallpaper off of the walls and slathered in GALLONS of white paint,  that old wood drank the paint! It was a MESS to remove the old paper and cheesecloth, a zillion strings to clip but I love the look. This shot is looking from my office into the guest room (again, very top shot is of that room, no longer pink and shabby chic but its in its shabby glory in that first photo;).

    The tiny “attic crawl space” door is even cut from the v-groove.

    I’m not showing you the funky 1970s rough wainscot in the dining room that is a little weird so don’t be too jealous.  Bottom line, I am thankful for the wood in this house.  That sounds like an odd statement but if you are reading this blog I think you can relate. When you live in an older home (really any home for that matter) it is easy to get bogged down in the things you want to do or wish were remodeled or “nicer.”  The truth is, I painted every inch of this house and it’s not perfect and is showing wear from living here ten years and enduring a little boy but I am still so thankful for the character and durability of these features. Thanks for letting me share.

    What do you love about your house?

    What a crazy week…my poor little fella has a cold and there is a lot of ‘end of the year’ exhaustion but there also seems to be inspiration blooming everywhere..like this brilliance from Rae at Armommy..hello, this means I no longer have to nicely say “shhh” when someone passes through one of our bedroom doors (the one that has so much “character” it does not sit level..ha!)..thanks Rae!

    And these placemats, also by Armommy. Do I even need to explain the cuteness?…I didn’t think so! Read my recent post on Armommy here at Oh My! Handmade Goodness, a great new blog.

    And it appears while I am thinking about beadboard, the Nester is thinking about board and batten..love it, tons of great links too..also love her new drapes!  What a great office!

    So hang on mamas, school is nearly out and there will be more time to stay home, work on projects and enjoy kids and a relaxed schedule! At least that is my plan…can’t wait!
