Dressing a boy

As many of you know, finding cute things for boys is not easy..they can only wear so many overalls but I am glad warm weather is here so Henry can now wear these one piece “outfits.” Some call them rompers, I call them “jon jons”  what do you call them?

{from MEKO kids on Etsy}

Daddy can’t hardly handle the peter pan collar shirts underneath these type of one piece rompers but who can resist the chubby baby arms? Daddy probably wouldn’t go for the dot print either. We won’t even discuss smocking. But even Dad would like this blue with red.  And for my July baby..might just be perfect for a birthday outfit!

{from Bud and Branches on Etsy}

Or seersucker..oh how I love seersucker.  This is also seems like the last “baby” baby outfit so maybe the soft colors are a good choice.  And don’t laugh at me for overthinking this..it is pure joy..why deny myself this fun?!

{seersucker from this Etsy shop}

Which is your favorite..I am trying to choose something for Henry’s one year photo and birthday too (maybe all in one).  Drew had pale blue and white  toile for his first birthday outfit (don’t laugh yes toile) so I should probably do something similar color wise in case I want to hang the photos side by side one day.  (See there is a decorating point to this post;;)  BUT I could always do them in black and white if needed and I might anyway…OK I will stop..starting to make even myself sick…ha!

But one last thing, you know what I love about these Etsy clothes…they are well made and you are supporting a regular person not a big corporation with these purchases but also the PRICE.  Everything shown here is $28-39..similar items from Orient Expressed, Ragsland or Strasburg would be two to three times the cost!

So what do you think??  Seersucker for a portrait?  What are your favorite tips for dressing a little boy?  Share your favorite Etsy sellers in the comments..we would love to hear!

  1. I did seersucker overalls on my little man for 6 month pictures and it is one of my favorite outfits in any picture – adorable. He had bare feet with no shirt – so precious. Looked great in color and b&w. Our 1 year was in winter, so we did jeans, shirt and sweater vest. They’ll be cute no matter what though!

  2. Jon Jons!!

  3. Dress him the way you want while you can 🙂 Until he will only wear skinny jeans and black t-shirts.

  4. I love these– I think until 2 1/2 you can get away with it no problem (and my Alabama friends would say until 5 you can!) I’ve started doing matching pants/romper for my two boys– ages 17 and 40 months. Not to self-promote, but I’m partial to my little brand, Hoot Baby…www.hootbabydesigns.com We have big/little brother outfits in a different stripe every season.

  5. Daddy had had enough Feltman by age 1, but I was fortunate to hang on to the Jon Jons until about 2. LOVE those chubby legs and arms spilling out of them! I have to say I’m partial to the red, white, and blue for Mr. Man’s July birthday! Sweet Drew!

  6. yes, seersucker would be perfect! i love the way you dress your little boy….like an actual little boy not a mini-me of dad:)

  7. You know we here in the south love those “jon jons”…and I put my son in them (even the smocked ones!) until he was 4 and I couldn’t find them in his size anymore. I will say they aren’t so good for potty training. Luckily my husband is a good southern man and didn’t put up a fight. 😉

    I LOVE the green polka dot for every day wear, but you can’t ever go wrong with classic blue seersucker, imo. I think pale blue and red is a great combo, so you could always add the red mono.

  8. I love all of these options…John Johns are the perfect compromise. My son wore a Kelly’s Kids John John every day during the summer, and then on Sundays he wore a little bit dressier one with a Peter Pan collar shirt. He did were ruffles on his collar on Easter until he was 3, but my husband protested. I just told him that favorite son belonged to me to dress until he was 3. I’ve got some beautiful photos and then the rest of his life has been spent in khaki shorts and a polo.

  9. This Virginia girl calls them jon-jon’s too and my boys wore them until 4! LOVE little boys in them. I love the seersucker – so crisp, cool and classic!

  10. I live on the West Coast (Oregon)and I would call it a romper. I am obsessed with polka dots but my husband would kill me if I put it on our son (6 months old). Fortunately I was able to do the nursery however I wanted and it’s all about blue and brown polka dots!

  11. I love the jon jons! I dressed my son in them until he was about 18 months. He was big for his age and I was sad when I had to stop. I say dress him like that as much as you want because they will be too big way too soon.

  12. LOVE LOVE LOVE the jon jons!! Please tell daddy not to worry. My own little sweet boy wore these darling outfits, including the little shirts with peter pan collars AND little white shoes and socks for dress until he was about three. He is now a big strapping manly man with a doctor of pharmacy degree. He spends most of his spare time getting dirty while working on his car or watching football and drinking a beer or two. Baby clothes do not make the man.

    ps-If I could have found a jon jon with some smocking trim, he would have had that too!!!

  13. Thanks, Mary. Daddies across America are breathing a collective sigh of relief. 🙂

  14. my pleasure! 😀

  15. Your husband sounds just like mine! My little boy just turned one and still wears the rompers/coveralls, but I think this summer will be the last for those outfits. I love them embroidered with a name or monogram. The seersucker would look great for a portrait. I’m overwhelmed by Etsy. So thanks for showing some great examples. Cute!

  16. Oh, Holly! There are gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous, and precious! I can handle a whole lotta “precious”…so I am not a fair judge at dressing baby boys, most would say. hehe! I love all of the ones you pictured. And I don’t think seersucker is bad for a portrait. (Is it too informal??? I don’t think so…my opinion.) I am dressing Jack in jon-jons till I can no longer find sizes in them. HAHA! Seriously… ;o) I am fortunate that Mike doesn’t say too much about how I dress Jack….he’ll give me a look when I bust out the peter pan collars and some of the smocked outfits. Pretty soon they will be wearing the coon skin caps and toting a rifle (Drew at the Alamo)…hahaha…so we mommas can dress them like the pure, precious baby boys they are for the short period of time they are babies, right?!

    So glad you posted these Etsy companies…

  17. Romper although I’ve said jon jon, too! And because I’m a matchy-matchy kind of portrait person, I’d say go with the the lighter seersucker! (And get the other one for fun!)

    Boys are the BEST!! yay for shortalls!!! that’s what I call them! or JohnJohns!!
    My chunky monkey was pushing 40lbs and a size 4T for his 1yr portrait! I had such a hard time finding something age appropriate and plain enough for the pic, which would be hanging beside his older sisters.

    I finally found a 2 piece ‘blouse’ (you know the one, peter pan & button down the back) and short set. In the palest, tiny baby blue check. Of course, I had the blouse monogramed! It turned out perfect!!!

    And, I am really glad I went with the 2-piece outfit for the pic. My favorites are of him sitting down & his fat legs poking out….the outfit really layed nicely. The material was very thin and delicate. Wouldn’t my husband be proud!!! Sometimes shortalls can get bunched up! especially on chunky monks!!!

    Good luck!!

  19. adorable, but up in the Northern states we don’t dress our little boys like that! Dr. Phil did a show once on a Mother who was dressing her 4 or 5 year old in the “Jon Jon'” and the Dad was horrified!!! Your post made me think of that!

  20. I am really enjoying these comments! Love Mary’s story about her son..i usually say something along the lines of “well next time i will bring him to church in camo and a coors light tshirt” when i get ribbed about my boys being too cute ;;

    I call them shortalls too..in fact i push the whole “their jsut overalls” thing with dad sometimes;; BUT those t-strap sandals they put on FIVE (ok they look 7) year old boys in the ragsland catalog..sort of strange, even for me! That should be on Dr Phil but the shortalls, come on??;;

    they dont even make feltman past 9 months do they???

  21. Love all of these and love this look for little boys. I would call them short-alls or jon jons. My vote is for the 2nd one w/ red monogram for the portrait and birthday party. It’s beautiful.

  22. This post really takes me back. I used to make those for my son when he was little. (Now he’s in his 30’s) They’re great for the hot weather! AND I lived in a northern state at the time! 🙂
    I like the seersucker.

  23. Millicent says

    Definitely the seersucker! It’s a classic and timeless. I dressed our son in these when he was little – they were Kellys Kids here. On Sundays, we added the Peter Pan collar shirts with them, but during the week, he wore them alone. Love it!

  24. “Camo and a Coors Light tshirt for church”……hahahahahahahaa! Too funny….

  25. Seersucker with monogram, hands down my favorite!

  26. Savannah Blackburn says

    I don’t know if it is too late to weigh in but, personally, I LOOOVE searsucker on boys, guys and men. You can not go wrong with searsucker, it is classic. My boyfriend and I just went to an outdoor wedding this past weekend in College Station and my boyfriend (25) wore his searsucker suit at my request and looked dashing! I don’t think you will regret it!!

  27. Love those jon jons! I planned Toile Baby’s entire birthday party color scheme around his smocked birthday outfit! And for his one year pictures, well, there will be wardrobe changes, one involving a button on shorts outfit that may have lace on it… I say baby it up with the soft colors for the one year!

    Can’t wait to see how it turns out!

  28. Jon jons all the way until they potty train! Smocking, too! I told my husband that my boys have the rest of their lives to wear a polo shirt and khakis and while I can I am dressing them like the little boys that they are. He is a good Southern man and didn’t fuss a bit. 😉 He knew the end would come at about age 3 and just kept his mouth shut. My youngest just turned 3 and just potty trained so we are unfortunately now out of the one piece outfits. 🙁 Makes me sad!

  29. Thanks for these great comments about classic fashion for boys. It s been many years since I had a boy young enough to put in shorts and peter pan collars…but they looked so sweet for short a short time. My favorite Sunday outfit style was what we called back then (1970s) and eton suit; short pants, collarless jacket, knee socks and saddles.The shirt was usually white with a peter pan collar…never any tie. A great outfit in wool for winter or seersucker in summer….navy shorts with suspenders and sailor collars were sweet too…

  30. 1st of all–all of these are absolutely adorable!!–put them on your boy as long as you can!!

    and I guess I would fit right in here!–Yes I am old fashioned–and yes I love Rompers/Jon jons–and YES–My 4.5 year old who is 46 inches tall and a whopping 64 pounds will be wearing one of the cutest ones ever–that I actually just ordered today from a seller on Etsy!! the lady-named Cindy Hurt on Etsy is custom making his based on his measurements I sent her–and he actually wears 6’s and 7’s in all his regular clothes right now!!–he will be 5 this Fall and this too will come to an end for us and I will be soooo sad! “I say check your fashion history folks–Rompers/jon jons were originally a boys garment and up to the 1950’s were worn by boys all the way to first grade–they were called “playsuits” and more formal ones were made for Sundays or parties etc. they originated in Europe around the turn of the century. i say its so straange how they still make them right now for girls in sizes up to 10 but stop for boys at age 4 or size 4t. Oh and and for the potty training issue–we never had it as all the ones I have bought or had made for him have snaps in the crotch area! here is the link if u want to see the one I bought–(BTW its SEERSUCKER!!!)

    https://www.etsy.com/listing/69985440/easter-john-john-train-applique-with-egg

    and also–my hubby is a gun toting manly guy too–but he is 10 years my senior-I am 40 with a four year old!–and he is just as old fashioned–if not more so than i am–i say dress them like the sweet babies they are till they get old enough to argue with you about what they want–Girls have sooo much “cutesy stuff” out there to pick from and I truly believe that boys get the short end of the stick in this area!!!!
