    My friend Emily at Jones Design Company did a post yesterday.  Called Twirl.  And it struck a chord with many women. And when I read it, I cried in the coffee shop, literally in the coffee! Because the theme is not new, God’s response of love is not new but we as women pick this “thing” this baggage up over and over. Maybe it is especially tender at the start of a school  year.

    We feel pressure.  Pressure as women. Whether it is baby weight, anxiety in carline, pressure to do things better, DO MORE, be more…just your general STRIVING PRESSURE and INSECURITY we put on ourselves and maybe even one another.  The bloggers I know don’t want to do that.  ever. put pressure on others.  Maybe we are crazy (bloggers) putting our lives and/or businesses out there for the world to see…maybe that is asking for more pressure on us all while putting potentially more pressure on our peers. Crazy! Well Twirl is the pledge against striving and pressure.  AND HEAR ME, I am not a froufy princessy kind of girl. I really am not. But Twirl represents RESTING and abiding in God’s love.  Twirl says sitting at the feet of Jesus is better than a lost issue of Domino that resurfaces (ok that was lame but you get my drift);; Twirl is realizing and knowing and enjoying that GOD DELIGHTS IN YOU.  It’s not about cheesy pink tulle.  It’s about a perfect Father who loves you whether you “have it together” or not. Dirty slipcovers and worse.  much worse.

    What I am trying to say is, Emily’s post along with some other discussions and observations I have had lately, just reminded me that God doesn’t care  so much what we blog about, talk about and stress about.  Sure He cares about the details of our lives and how we influence and even idle words but the point is He cares about US..not our product..not what we do.. He delights in us whether we post to our blog or make a cute craft or redecorate the guest room.on and on.  God is a creator and he made us in his image, he made that thing in us “creative types” that loves the feel or “hand” of a quality piece of fabric or the part of us that enjoys the pleasing combination of two fresh colors…He is a God of beauty and order, all things we celebrate in design. But we don’t have to constantly DO DO DO, strive and strive to earn His love and be worthy. He just wants to be with this us. Maybe this sounds weird to you, but “twirling” sounds better to me than striving.  Being sounds better than stress. Love and hope better than pressure and fear.

    Read Emily’s post,(go here if you want to get the twirl “button) and remember as you are hopping around blogland and see the “Twirl” button that God loves you, He sees you and your heart when no one else understands your pain or intentions. At the end of the day you are His child and He desires a relationship with you, He DELIGHTS in you..and like I have said before, that’s better than the best fabric or cutest chair.

      The LORD your God is with you,
           he is mighty to save.
           He will take great delight in you,
           he will quiet you with his love,
           he will rejoice over you with singing.–

    {Recently I did this fun post over at the Nester’s blog! In case you didn’t see then, I thought I would share today..enjoy! and watch later in the week for my “FAVORITE THINGS BABY/KID List 2010″ Check last year’s version here}

    How do you create a fresh baby nursery?? Not a themed room with contrived decorating and glaring colors but instead a FRESH  space with soothing and inspiring colors and a touch of vintage and modern.

    {Amy Butler fabric and its linen not quilting material! from here}

    My number one piece of advice?  Use as many NON-NURSERY items as possible, whether it is lighting, color, fabrics, glider/chair or rugs..steer clear of the baby baby items…instead gravitate to the things you love that might work in any room of the house.  Throw in a touch of whimsy and a precious new life and you have a fresh nursery.

    {Like these items from Ballard Designs. Le Poeme rug and fab lantern options!}

     More favorite ways to achieve a FRESH NURSERY:

    • ART  I love these flashcards from Martha at Michael’s but I think most places are sold out. No fear, how about ditching the ‘mass produced ‘ and going for real art for your littles. (Although if you find these, snatch them up..they are darling and cheap! ha!)

    {Martha Stewart flashcards at Michaels}

    If Martha isn’t available, no worries because there are so many amazing options on Etsy like this artist, Holly Lewis of  Tembo Studio.

    She did the paperdolls at the top of the post…and she also does flashcards prints. The woman studied printmaking at Harvard for pete’s sake AND she is a mama! I love this source.

    I also found these wonderful free downloads from a project called FEED YOUR SOUL  featured here..wonderful selection of fresh looking art and its FREE if you feel like printing your own!

    Art is available everywhere…So inspire yourself and your little one with as much artwork as possible in the nursery!

    • FABRIC. Think soft colors or very careful use of bold.  Think non matchy for interest. Consider non-juvenile fabrics…like geometrics, retro prints, or even plain linen. Or toile. I still think toile when I think baby and that’s okay  But don’t be afraid to think outside of the box with fabric and color and go against usual gender trends like pink or blue.
    •

     {I think these work for a boy or girl, what do you think? from fabric.com}

    Which brings me to my next point…

    • COOL TOYS…This lion from blabla and available at Land of Nod or Layla Grace and other boutiques is nearly $50 but you don’t have to spend a lot to find cool toys…wooden or knit etc… Target and IKEA are selling a lot of things like this too. . .don’t just assume they are too expensive if you like the look.

    {carrot car $2.99 from IKEA}

    • COLOR.  Again, you don’t have to stay gender specific though of course that tradition is always pretty.  But my favorite girl color combo is actually blue and red with just touches of pink.  In general, lots of white is no fail especially as a way to unite a mismatched room of furniture. AND GREY..oh mercy if I have another baby I promise you its crib will be grey or is it GRAY??  And these Jenny Lind cribs are cheap and easy to find and paint.  So don’t stress if you an expensive crib is not in your budget.

    OTHER ITEMS I am loving right now or STILL LOVING for a fresh nursery look:

    • anything industrial
    • wire baskets
    • old sign letters not cute matchy letters
    • vintage toys, baby clothes or books
    • plates on the wall
    • chalkboard on doors down low and in lighter colors like mocha or pink!
    • vintage lights-chandeliers of industrial…endless options.even exterior lights!

    Bottom line, a FRESH NURSERY may  have vintage items but mixed with a modern chair or geometric fabric and fresh textiles for an effortless look. It can be a delicate dance and daunting task to put together a room that doesn’t come on too strong but it’s worth the effort to create a room that soothes the senses on late nights and sweet days and inspires as your baby grows.

    I leave you with this for inspiration and fun!

    NOW GO MAKE A BABY!  Love, Holly

    Whatever! I just painted TWO more areas in my house with chalkboard paint! I can’t get enough..My laundry room doors have it (see photo in banner above), Drew’s dresser AND bed, labels on Henry’s changer baskets, a large framed one, and now its in the kitchen (the door below and the wall by the fridge)! Why do I love it so much? It’s not like I really enjoyed school that much. And it is everywhere, every blog, every magazine, nearly every young family’s home I visit has a chalkboard wall of some sort.  Usually I would be so over something this popular. Not this time.  I still love it.

    This is the door in our kitchen that leads to our upstairs area. Not sure why Drew added “army” to Daddy’s “happy birthday” list?? Daddy is not an Army guy but brother insisted I not erase his word!

    I wonder if the next generation of homeowners will say “yes we bought this house, so much potential, oh you won’t believe, it has one of those ghastly chalkboard walls, first thing we did was cover it!”  ha!

    What do you think…is this “trend” around for a while or is it a classic? I say, Who cares?!  If you love it, do it and enjoy!

    And…Do you actually use your chalkboard or does it get “stagnant”..does the dust bother you??? I have the coffee shop chalk markers but don’t love them for the chalkboards I use often, great for Drew’s room!

    What do cute skirts from Boden and one of my favorite e-clients  have in common??? fabric of course!

    I mean really,  it just me or does this adorable Boden skirt ….

    not look like this fabric…

    This fabric is great…I’ve used it on several projects lately and I love it..the scale is much larger than you might think (notice in the photos  below)…Look how great it looks on this sofa we just spruced up recently for my client… Remember Nancy’s cute kitchen window..well this is her house and she did a great job making pilllows from some of the fabrics shown below…

    This is one way my version of e-decorating works…I suggest fabrics and then the clients order samples like Nancy did so they can see and feel the fabric in person before making their selection and order..often they spread the fabrics out like here so i can say “delete the PB pillow” or “delete fabric number 3″ etc…usually I have my own sample piece at home so once the client has it in hand we can discuss via email and map out where to use what fabric (which can be a challenge in these huge open floor plans huh?!)

    I just love good quality, affordable fabric like these pictured above..jump on over to Cote de Texas..she is talking about this topic today and mentions many favorites!

    Bear with this mama. My baby just left for school. Daddy took him because his school is in another town and I will be doing the pick up.  The baby is still asleep…it’s both sad and little wonderful too! The best part is Drew was SO excited, up early which is not like him and eager to go.  Much different from last year when I had six week old infant and a big 4 year old not wanting to be left in the classroom. SO I am very thankful this morning. Very thankful. And excited for my boy.

    We love you Drew.  You are a sweet, strong, smart and funny little man. We prayed for you many days before you came into this world and now we can’t imagine life without you.  Love, Mommy & Daddy

    I keep thinking about putting my boys in the same room for sleep..just sleep..a simple room..one crib, one twin bed. Simple. Near mama. Toys elsewhere. There are so many factors to consider (age, sleep patterns, noise). But I keep thinking about this photo above (from Cookie,..i love this room)Not what I would do for boys exactly but it is so so sweet, it actually belongs to  this room belongs to none other than the talented John Derian’s son and daughter. Maybe I just like to daydream about how to rearrange my house and maximize function.

    I love this image with the books!  so clever!

    This photo of the boys in the toile room just cracks me up!

    Just because the wallpaper is toile doesn’t mean they can’t  be boys in here…the wood and brown tone in the paper just make it work.  Yep my husband would never go for this…although Henry does have trellis drapes right now…

    And I gasped when I saw this next image…it’s what I’ve had in mind for a big boy room since I first found out I was having a boy over six years ago..I wasn’t surprised to find out the mama lives in Fredericksburg, Texas!  This look is too cluttered for my little men right now but one day..ONE DAY!

    In the meantime, I will probably stick to something like this feel below… from Charleston, SC, simple and fresh…

    But the decor is the easy and fun part..it’s the function that gives me pause..WHAT WILL WORK FOR US. Because if I have learned anything, SLEEP matters more than even fabric.  IT. MUST. WORK.

    So what do you think?? Did you share a room growing up? Do your children share a bedroom? What has been your experience..would love to hear!

    Did y’all think she fired us???  Nope, just a crazy summer for everyone BUT but this project is finally coming together and I am so excited because Hyacinth loves the room.

    Remember we started here:

    Below is a more recent “in progress” photo. Imagine without the rug and with more fabric and color!

    Ree snuck in a took a few pictures in June in case you didn’t see on her little blog post;;  photos by the Pioneer Woman herself! Look a little closer at Hyacinth’s new facade!

    More to come soon I assure you…I will tell you this, one major thing is staying, obviously we changed the fireplace wall, wood over the brick and mirror behind the shelves…there will be some fabric entering the space soon (you know i am happy about that) and some other changes…so stay tuned..just wanted to let you know the Design Team has not been fired!;;

    This fabric is not made in Mississippi or inspired by Mississippi as far as I know.  But I purchased it at the Linen Shop while on vacation there and it just feels like Mississippi to me…and I love it. I can so see it paired with a geometric print although really I have no plans for this fabric (though I did have a certain client in mind when I saw it) but I just had to have a couple of yards..crazy I know but it just felt like the perfect fabric when I saw it..does this sound strange or can anyone identify?!  I mean really,  it’s a floral but not too fussy or tightly spaced..it has a nice barkcloth texture, a neutral background AND colorful too..so a little rustic but gorgeous and green and verdant as well.  I am going to start quoting Faulkner if I don’t stop rambling so here is the fabric by Braemore…Oh and if you live in Miss. you should definetely check out the Linen Shop..great selection and prices and an amazing store next door called Plantation Interiors (their website does not do them justice, they have amazing tables and lights) you must visit in person if nearby!

    Do YOU have a fabric that reminds you of a place or region..tell me about it!

    {Oh and I also bought a smidge of this and this… I know, it’s a problem but they were great prices..less than wholesale!}

    Our family of four recently embarked on a seven day road trip to Mississippi in search of good art, good food, good books, and good times with our boys! Yes, you heard correctly… we drove from Texas to Oxford, MS with a five year old and 13 month old.  We visited Vicksburg, Clarksdale, Oxford, Natchez and all points in between.  It was quite an experience as you can imagine.  We saw lots of kudzu and much more.

    {kudzu growing near Natchez}

    Not sure where to start in highlighting this trip, but from a cultural and historic preservation standpoint, Mississippi, like much of the South, is rich in history and architecture.  It all moves me deeply, everything from the grand views of Dunleith Plantation to the cotton fields, and life in the Delta pictured below.

    It’s an interesting place Mississippi… not just Southern, but totally American and real, and we loved it!  Here is a glimpse of Drew pretending to be a lion at Dunleith Plantation, where we spent the last night in the Dairy Barn.   I wonder why they wouldn’t want our boys in the big house?   Ha!

    We have many “statue” photos of Drew from the trip… I guess that is what happens to a child after you take them through the military park at Vicksburg (he. loved. it.) In fact, Drew had a great time the entire trip.  Henry, not so much.  He was more interested in keeping cool and snatching crackers!

    Here is another “statue” photo below of big brother with Mr. Faulkner in Oxford.

    And leave it to me to drive into blues town Clarksdale and instantly step out of the car and sniff out the coolest little store…

     and buy this apron…

    If you are from the area, you know Clarksdale really isn’t a “cute apron” sort of town. It’s quite different from Oxford and Ole Miss which I will have to save for another post. But let me just says it’s very hip to be SQUARE in Oxford.   We had a blast exploring the bookstores, old homes, campus and quaint shops! Oh, and I saw the best looking man in all Mississippi while hanging out in the Grove at Ole Miss.  He sends his love!

    Texans are friendly, but I have to say that the people of Mississippi were so nice and wonderful to our family, they made the trip better than any beautiful home or yummy food… thanks y’all!

    Here it is y’all.  Dirty. white. slipcovers

    Don’t you just get sick of hearing “i love having white slipcovers with my 14 children, they work wonderful for our family” ha!….I both agree and have issues with this statement.  Melissa at the Inspired Room was the first I know of to be really honest about the issue. Read what she has to say here about white slips! The truth is white slipcovers look great, when clean.  But they DO GET DIRTY.

    See below.  Those aren’t shadows. In fact, I think you can almost see where two little feet rest between the cushions!

    I mean really, its just dirty….not even a cute pillow (yellow flower pillow from DWELL @ Target;) can divert attention from this mess. And sure they can be bleached and washed but it is work to take them off and do this periodically (really needs to be done every 3-4 weeks) and if NOT prewashed like I did not do nearly 12 years ago, well they SHRINK too.

    Yep in all its glory, not only dirty and worn but it shrunk. Alot. Look at the back all hiked up!  Notice my oldest looks very concerned..he’s “relaxin” watching cartoons and twirling his hair!

    The good news, I hauled the sofa and chair off today for new slips, after TEN YEARS, finally new slips..and what color?? WHITE!  That’s right, I am doing it again because they may get dirty and gross but you CAN bleach and borax if you have white. In fact, this time I bought white white duck from fabric.com. The current slips are off white denim.  That’s right I have TWO boys and I am going even lighter! And yes it is work but I love the look and the light color brightens up my older, smaller home. The chair will be a ticking stripe but the sofa will remain white, at least until the boys lay on it awhile! I have the best slipcover person in the world and I can’t wait to tell y’all more about her so stay tuned.
