    I finally explored Houzz and there are some great images and inspiration there..be sure and check it out..for now, a few of my faves below!

    I  first saw the idea of shelves around a door years ago in Traditional Home, it was a dining room..i have never forgotten..wish I had that image, but this one is pretty great too! I would have done books above the door instead of the leaded glass but that is just me;

    And I have posted before about my love for old signs, I would love to find an old one that says “grocery” or “city cafe.” Authentic and worn like this one.

    yum…dark ceilings and check floors. I love check floors. AND THAT GREEN DOOR.  I nearly painted the back of my front door an apple green when Drew was a baby because I spent so much time sitting in a certain kitchen chair feeding him and staring at the back of the front door.  More recently, I am trying to talk a client into painting the back of an interior door in her bedroom that is front and center. It really does add interest and drama. Notice how the trim around the door is white not the green but the door “jam”/inside is the green.

    What is your favorite design, category or way to search over at Houzz?! Of course Janelle and Layla have some great inspiration over there as well as Tracery…check it all out!

    Simply with pillows.  Granted Tessa’s living room was already very pretty with nice drapes and furniture but the colors were blah she felt.  We simply added some pattern in pillows..it sounds like a decorating cliche but it worked!

    BEFORE

    AFTER

    Fabrics used are bosporous toile  (which yes I use a lot because it just looks great in any room and fabric combination) and the trellis is arden** in chocolate from Ballard. She used 26×26 down filled pillows from IKEA..what a great idea for inserts…the large size really makes a difference!

    Tessa lives in the Midwest (just look out her window at the flag and lovely street) and has a reallly fun blog on family, home and cooking..I love her recent project using downloadable graphics and fabric to frame!  Check more out on her project here!

    I love the little car peeking out of the bottom of her photo!  Thanks for sharing with us Tessa!

    Oh, and last but not least, I have to say what we all know, LIFE IS NOT ABOUT PILLOWS, but life is about beauty and home and the LIFE that goes on inside our homes and families. Beautiful things, patterns that complement, colors that please… they just soothe our senses and enrich life.  But we know they are just things. Today my family, particularly my mother, buried someone very special, and I am reminded of the backdrop beauty plays, whether its a fabric or a beautiful Texas park, to the real business of living and loving God and one another.

    [**edited to say, the "Arden" fabric from Ballard is actually a Waverly fabric called Chippendale fretwork and is much less here and it comes in both an indoor and outdoor]

    The John Derian website is beautiful…i mean really, images from his store like this…

    If i was going to NYC this fall (which I am not but i like to daydream), his two stores would be TOP on my list.  Such a collection of artists he has there it seems, like the Hugo Guinness linoleum cut prints in vintage frames pictured above, plus my lust for his decoupage pieces.  It’s like a gallery in addition to his own original work.  And did you know he now has a furniture line..yep, WILDFLOWER in Austin has it so i might have to take a peek the next time I am there..love their store.

    {from his website, check the furniture line here}

    I just love how even his website is like a collage. Even after the Target thing he still seems so handmade and artisan, love that.  But until I can afford one of his huge decoupage pieces, and since I gave away most of the Target stuff I scored (Ok i kept the coasters, and mugs and home sweet home tray)…this FOUR DOLLAR wrap will satisfy me in the meantime thank you very much, hello artwork for the new dining room! It is sold here, on this website under ephemera, not in Target stores. I think Target had some tissue but no large pieces of wrap.  Interesting.

    I love theCavallini wrap but i adore this too..I might mix them in the room.

    Another wrap from John. Yes, it is $4. and it is 18″ x 27″

    I should probably go place my order (not sure if you can actually order through his website or have to find a retailer for the wrap?) asap before this secret gets out..but I had to share it here! Enjoy!

    I am loving these wicker bull heads from Ballard Designs..,i SO want these for Henry’s room! And they would be very appropriate, he is getting less “sweet baby” and more “I’m the boss get out of my way” every day.  Don’t get me wrong, he is still my sweet baby BUT since learning to walk he very much resembles a little dictator toddling around the house with his paci!

    I bought a “bag of pumpkins” this morning at the grocery store, nice stripey ones in a nice small medium size, not medium pumpkins, not super cheap but if I make a little pumpkin purchase each time I go then by the time it starts to actually cool down here, I will have my collection together, I love a ton of pumpkins! Otherwise I am not much into wreaths or seasonal decorations. But I do love fall and brown and kraft paper wrapping… burlap and other things pictured below… {click on the photo to go to sources}

    fall = brown = kraft

    Good thing one of my babies was born in October, he was due on Halloween but luckily came early! He is a having a little camping party this year, nothing too theme-y just boys in the woods, cowboy soup and smores (praying it wont be too hot). But I am playing around with this faux bois paper for the invite..I love all of thefaux bois madness. It’s everywhere.

    Are you are enjoying slipping into fall…What is your favorite thing about cooler weather?

    {Clothing item, food, decorating item? I would love to hear!}

    I snapped these photos before boxing up these fabric samples to send to an e-client in Georgia. Not every e-client gets a box of fabric, but sometimes I have the samples my clients need in stock and I can mail them to them faster than online fabric stores.

    It also really helps if we have both seen the fabric, color and scale of the fabric in person.

    These I tagged to make sure she knows what I have in mind for placement. Aren’t the colors and patterns fun?!

    Read more about my online decorating consultations here.  And here are some of my client comments about the process.

    Through lots of email, photos of the space, electronic design boards and sometimes good ol’ snail mail, online decorating consultations can and do work!

    So it was sort of an ironic joke with HGTV.com contacted me for ideas for organizing toys.

     Remember this post

    BUT I remembered I did have the old crates below.

    When I saw these old crates I loved the colors and feel..I bought them to use for centerpieces or utensils/organization for Henry’s birthday party but they didn’t really work..but then I had an idea, add casters!

    We simply added $1 casters from HomeDepot..so easy! And honestly, this is about as complex as the DIY gets around our house but we did it!

    And now we have toy storage, particulary for legos… the sectioned crate works great for sorting (not that I sorted them;) and as a safe keeping place for lego art!

    This is a big issue at our house..the need for a safe keeping zone for lego creations…DO NOT TOUCH!;; Big brother really likes that sign and can use the crate as a diorama for creating and slide it under the bed for safekeeping…It’s like a little lego table within a box…no lifting and risking it breaking a part.  I don’t about your house but that can cause big drama around here.

    Drew playing legos!

    Baby Henry has a cart too…No there are no sharp edges, I checked!

    Slides right under the bed..they haven’t realized they can race them yet..I am sure that is coming!;;

    Thanks for looking! Remember sometimes its ok to think INSIDE the box!  Many containers that were originally meant for other things can be repurposed for unique toy storage!

    What unique ways have you discovered for storing toys??  Of course in my opinion nothing beats a BIG BASKET, more on the perfect basket later.

     But for now, tell me about YOUR TOY STORAGE IDEAS?

  • Sep17

    My oldest is over at HGTV.com today playing legos….well sort of, check out his photo in the little gallery here.  When they asked for ”toy storage” ideas I never dreamed they would use the photo I sent of him playing . . . he loves his legos! More on this project on Monday!

    Have a safe and wonderful weekend!

    I finally have a few photos to show you.  Not totally finished but beginning to think I may never be so here is a look. Remember I started with the dark Ralph Lauren floral Guinevere which I had and loved for YEARS.  You can see the before look here and here and here if interested. Most major elements in the room are the same I just changed a few fabrics, I did not even paint the walls (shame on me). I love the wall color SW Urban Putty and it works in my opinion even though i must admit it is almost the same color just a tad darker than the linens. And I have a 14 month old, when would I paint? ha! I did get a new headboard which I wrote about here. I like it but do wish I had gotten the nailhead headboard from Ballard.  Oh well, this one is very comfy and it matches the bedskirt and it was delivered very quickly which doesn’t happen with custom or special order. Same quilts and coverlet just new bedskirt and shams. I left all of the wood furniture black or stained except the Marcia Brady dresser which you can read about here.

    The look now is a combination of linen and pretty blue linen damask print (on sale at Hobby Lobby..woohoo, but now discontinued I believe).  The wonderful Union Jack pillow was made for me by my friend Camille. The white shams are from Leftovers.  The stripe shams are ticking stripe fabric from my local Wal-Mart with muslin flanges and ties, designed by yours truly and made locally.

    The monogramed sham was done locally as well, I’ve had it for a while.  I did not intend to use it in this room but at the last minute I put it on the bed and like the little girl says on the Ethan Allen commercial “it ties the whole room together”…at least for me!

    I kept my  original white matelasse and khaki quilt from TJ Maxx.  I barely had enough of the blue damask fabric for the drapes and one accent…could not score enough for the bedskirt.  I am using a “hidden clip” system on the panels..much like a hidden tab..more on that later..I like rings with pins or sewing them on but needed fast and easy and cheap..the rod is from Wal-mart!

    The huge baskets are our office filing and I use that word loosely! This is where the blogging and e-consulting goes on . . . and excuse the mess in the “deer bowl”  that is Daddy’s spot and off limits! You can ignore the coffee cup too, like I said we really use this room.  There are usually toys, books and laundry piles in various spots!

    I do like the way there is still some warmth in the room with the books and baskets and black in the furniture and accents . . . keeps it from being too feminine and airy and prissy.  Like I said we really use this room so it has to function and feel comfortable. For instance, the view across from the bed, same grouping of prints as before only the color of the dresser changed so there is still some color and warmth. And notice the linen print body pillow.  I couldn’t find enough yardage in that print for a duvet or bedskirt and frankly I don’t like a duvet, too heavy for us, and like wrestling an alligator to deal with…BUT I do like the look of pattern and “something folded” at the end of the bed so I am doing that with an extra quilt and the body pillow…Yes it would be better if it was 18″ wider but the long ruffle helps. I could have done a custom insert and made it longer just like I could have done a custom headboard but again, I just didn’t.  I wanted this room changed as simply and budget-friendly as possible. I just wanted it ”done” so I took some easy options and that really worked for me in this room.  I ordered the bedskirt from here.  It matches the headboard and they both surprisingly blend with the higher end linen on the gorgeous table skirt from this fab shop! The long pillow was made by Michelle at Make and she did a great job getting the pleated ruffle just right!

    Seriously thought about adding some grey and nearly used this  shown above for a big box pleat bedskirt but it was on back order so I took the easy bedskirt route like I mentioned..and I ended up going with Wal-mart ticking stripe for a little pattern on pillows and those shams are my faves! I am really enjoying the plain linen everywhere else. But for fun here are a few other fabrics I contemplated using and might in the future. (JUST ONE OF THESE NOT ALL!) Options right?! ha!

    Cafe mosaic from Robert Allen

    Might still do a wing chair in that mosaic show above..i love it! But it felt too busy for the bedskirt. It is really pretty in person..this photo is a bit blurry but the white is very crisp and makes it seem fresh and crisp and not so busy.  Too many fabrics not enough time!

    And I have had a yard of this from Ballard for months, they call is Parrish but several people recently pointed out to me that  LS Fabrics has it for less and they called it Wesley, fascinating..but again as much as i love the pattern we really use this room and have extra clutter in here often and keeping the palette simple seemed wise. But if you have worked with me you know I love this pattern.

    And last but not least my most recent consideration for a ‘probably not needed but can’t stop contemplating’ addition to this room is this wonderful fabric found here at LS Fabrics as well as other places on the web, you can even order it at Joanns! Yep, that is Cat’s Cradle!

    Or even this!

    Hello Annie Selke’s “links” ..love it..this is my problem, I see a new fabric and get obsessed with it but once it lays around my “desk” for a while I get over it, somewhat.  After all, I do love that Parrish, and the mosaic is so pretty…ha! I think I need to add ONE big pillow in the big ugly Ektorp chair to cover it until it moves, which ONE of these would you choose??? Who knows how things may change, I may get bored and add one of the additional fabrics to cover the headboard or do a new bedskirt but for now I am enjoying the calm introduction of the linens and blue. Madness to hear how I think huh?!

    Thanks for letting me ramble about our room.

    Even if you are renting and in a place for a short time, it is still great to do things to make the space feel like home.  It can be depressing to “put your life on hold” for a year. Instead I suggest unpacking your books, sewing some drapes out of inexpensive fabric and getting on with living, whether is a temporary address or not.  My client Rachel contacted me when she had a house under contract..we had plans to swiftly make a plan and execute so she could settle in her new home.  Circumstances changed, the house deal fell through, Rachel and her family are stuck in a rental for a year.  But she decided not to totally put life on hold, instead she is doing a few things in the rental, nothing foolish or too spendy, but some small projects to make this time in the temporary place less depressing and more nurturing.  Because that is why we decorate, not to impress others or keep up with trends but to inspire and nurture ourselves and our families.  To live with joy.

    Rachel's rental2

    Rachel is  doing this with color, nature and books.  She even told me about chalkboard CONTACT PAPER!  Who knew?  (Of course I said just use the paint and forget your deposit but she is more practical) Has anyone used this chalkboard paper?? It will cover sliding closet doors in the eating area.  Great for her homeschool projects and teaching.  And the kitchen, not her favorite space in the new place, and to top it off you can see it from the front door.  Our solution, we are going to hang a rod over the kitchen door opening and  hang drapes (pulled back of course) of the yellow chipper by premier

    For the sofa she is going to retrofit a ready made slipcover, it will be brown. I suggested adding the Thomas Paul aviary fabric in blue for pillows to punch up the sofa. And the bold floral picutred in the middle above will go on living room drapes. All of these fabric purchases can move with her to her new home later on and be used in similar or different ways..it’s just yardage and pillows!  Rachel’s books COVER and I do mean cover her wall behind the kitchen table and chairs. I love that. She and her family love reading and books and it is a perfect fit for them. And books are gorgeous, especially used ones….they bring color and LIFE to the space. Rachel is interested in “nature tables” a Waldorf teaching, so I suggested framing some nature art, even if it is just that Cavallini poster. I am also hoping she will mat and frame some of her children’s art to brighten the white walls. This has turned out to be such a fun project to work on…thanks Rachel!

    So what have you done to make temporary spaces feel less unsettled and more like home????

    In ten short (and long) years I have gone from painting furniture in my garage and selling it and other “junk” out of an antique mall to working as an interior decorator online and locally. This is a daunting post because it has been such a journey and seems a bit like navel gazing but the truth is, I am very thankful to be in this place and I want to share about it a bit more, I first talked about it here…thanks for indulging me!

    I get emails and inquiries quite often asking “how did you get started” and asking for advice on starting a business in design, especially online consultations and how that works.  Like I said it has been a long and complex journey and NOT PLANNED though it was my prayer to have a business. But only God could orchestrate motherhood, technology and the desire of my heart to work out this way.  I am not a “computer person” and  I do not have a degree in design. Yet the Lord is allowing me to do something I really love to do. Now I have some experience. I am very thankful.

    Around the year 2000 I was unhappy in my job, longing to become a mother and my parents were getting divorced.  I had always loved design.  I even nearly ditched my major in grad school to start over in an undergrad design program. But I had an assistantship and  I finished with degrees in history and Museum Studies.  I am glad I did. My work in those fields prepared me for much.  But decorating was always my hobby and way to escape stress.  My true joy and love.

    So in 2000, I started painting furniture I would find at garage sales and selling it in shops along with small junk pieces and other “things”…I even had a booth in an “antique mall,” I would do little markets and just “play shop” anyway I could. I really didn’t care if i made money it was just so fun. I was young and had energy. At that time I was working under the name “Shabby South Interiors” so clever and cute I thought.

    I also was finding support for my dreams through an online community associated with Victoria magazine.  Remember that great magazine.?! It went under and then was revived but it’s never been the same to me… Anyway the original Victoria magazine had message boards on the magazine’s website and one of the boards was called “The Business of Bliss” and it was awesome.  Before blogs this little place was a great community of women trying to figure out how to start businesses or encourage and share with others what they already knew. There I met Amy Powers from Inspire Company, one of the nicest and most talented people on the planet.  She created my first website.  I wish I could show you, it was so pretty.  I also met Tracey from a Cottage Industry and she helped me create my first business cards and price tags and was such an encouragement.

    All of this to say, God used other people and online support to help develop my dream and keep me focused on “following my bliss”, my husband and mother were also extremely supportive and encouraging but being able to talk with other women in business was and is such a resource.

    Which brings me to the next point, if YOU are dreaming of starting a creative business, I encourage to find a group of women, either through blogs or mentoring, online or in real life, some resource to educate and encourage you are the finer points of this dream.  One possible resource may be a workshop being put on by my friend Emily over at Jones Design Company.  Not only is Emily offering a workshop to give you some good information on web design, time management, setting up an online shop, etc..but she is also CREATING A COMMUNITY, a private community online where you can discuss your dream for a creative business and not just dream but get practical advice and information.  I am so excited about what she is doing.  The Internet is a vast frontier for women and mothers (sorry for the cliche but it’s true!), a great place for business and I encourage you as you step out and explore if this is a place for you and your ideas.
