If you read the BIG MAMA BLOG, you know she has a precious little daughter named Caroline. And if you read the BIG MAMA BLOG faithfully and have for years, then you know Caroline is quite full of life and opinions and one liners. Basically she knows what she wants and she is hilarious and smart. So watch out Big Mama and Daddy Big Mama.
So recently Caroline announced she has tired of the Waverly black and white wallpaper in the hall bath (her bathroom as well)…she has deemed it “old lady” which slightly upset me since I HAVE A BATHROOM PAPERED IN THE SAME PATTERN! (and I have since 1998) So if you have this paper as well, please don’t let Caroline make you feel bad about your wallpaper, but well she is ready to move on. She and Big Mama are in discussions and I am trying to mediate.
And what does Caroline want for the new decor? Hawaiian sunsets. That’s right. A HAWAIIAN SUNSET MURAL. S0 being the smart and fashionable mom she is, Bigmama steered her toward a shower curtain at Anthropolgie and that is the jumping off point for our idea board…here is a peak at our plan!
And I am not sure who is going to break it to Caroline about the lack of a Hawaiian sunset MURAL in the new design plan..I am diplomatically suggesting she paint a small canvas with a gorgeous Hawaiian sunset to add to her bath or frame and mat some lovely tropical drawings!
How do you accommodate your children’s ideas for “creativity” in their spaces??

Ha! too funny. I know what you mean, she is a hoot! love the curtain! what a great idea! I always came up with ideas and once my mom really started letting me do them (even after this look that said, “WHAT?!?”), she started loving them!

How wonderful this mom let her daughter get a say! I think it’s great she let her inspiration rule the room. (I’m also glad the mural was vetoed) My boys are still a little too young but have done projects to help them along! This is truely a way to show that there are “No rules” when designing!

I love your plan, Holly!!!
Caroline makes me laugh as much as Melanie does. My favorite blog, hands down! I like the idea of having Caroline paint her own small sunset to frame.

So far the girls are content to have their art posted in the downstairs. Nobody has made a peep about the upstairs. I’ve told them that we are going to redo their room (in big, bold Liberty of London flowers) AFTER I’m done with the rest of the house—you know how much I have to do. They are on board with that plan.

Then I must be totally old-lady, because I love the black toile. It’s classic. But I can see how Caroline is in need of some bright colors. She is one colorful girl! HA!

Pretty much let them do what they want. My son did want to paint one wall of his room black with the solar system and Star Wars on it. I couldn’t do black paint, thinking about having to paint over it if we moved. I should have let him though. He’s all grown up and married with two little girls. It guys by so quickly. The Star Wars ship he drew on the wall is still there. One thing I learned is that children can literally become seriously hampered if they grow up in a house where all the decorating is done for them and inspite of them. The most fun I had redoing my room as a young teenager was being sent to the furniture store with the in house decorator. He listened and helped me pull things together. Later, another girl walked in and needed help. No other decorator would talk to her. He said he’d gladly help her. Turns out she brought the plans to a mansion her dad had just built. Her mom had passed away. They decorated the entire thing!
