Sneak peek: my boys are sharing a room!

For over a month, my little boys (ages 18 months & 6 years) have been sharing a room.. a small room and it has been working…knock on wood.

Some of you may remember, I had much angst over how to rearrange our rooms to fit out needs and i had reservations about putting our six year old upstairs alone at the top of our steep stairs, secluded from the rest of the house and our master.  So i began to think and pray about them sharing a room for sleeping.  I even blogged about it here.  And then I started the longgg process.  We put all of his toys upstairs and eventually put both boys in the nursery.  Of course we had to “de-baby” the room so big brother would be happy..this was sad because i had decorated thenursery for henry less than two years ago but drapes and other things went to fave clients and the changes began..

First the awnings came down….

then the chandelier had to go . . .

replaced with  this from Barn Light Electric.

and of course the organic (my code word for flora) thomas paul and trellis fabrics had to go . . . replaced with COWBOYS, thomas paul ANIMAL fabric, and geometric sheets on both beds (out of one twin set from target i made a new cribskirt for henry and have a flat sheet for drew’s twin and cases for both, standard and mini)….and lots of soldiers, big brother’s artwork and various animals BOTH boys can enjoy!

and we love it ..just a crib and twin bed..tiny dresser for everyday clothes..other clothes are stored upstairs and jammies in the bathroom..wall color and rug stayed the same..tweaked crib bedding and added new drapes and light and voila!

Its working..for now. . . a year maybe two or until big brother is ready to be upstairs alone ALL NIGHT and mama has total peace about the move..overprotective yes but we are all sleeping well and that counts for something!

Still putting final touches on and hope to have more photos soon if interested (i will share more sources then)…thanks for looking and for sharing with me about your experiences with bunking children in the same room!

  1. Love it! So cute!!

  2. I love it! I think it will work great. Happy New Year, Holly!

  3. About a year ago we moved into a new house and put our two boys, ages 3 and 5, in the same room. It works well except when it’s time to go to bed. The little one, now 4 year olds, has a bit more energy than his older brother. So we are trying to put him to bed a half hour earlier so he won’t disturb his brother when it’s his turn to go to bed. All is all, they love sharing a room and it’s so fun to listen to their conversations at night. Love the room you put together for your boys. Can’t wait to see the entire thing.

  4. Awwww, my boys are age six and two – very similar age span to yours. I think it’s great for siblings to share spaces as it creates a unity and “sibling support system.”

Also, like you, I moved my eldest boy to our “bonus” room (the only upstairs space) when he was five and I needed little brother out of MY room! I was concerned about how Big Bro would do up there *alone,* but it has been great!

When asked, “Where is your favorite place to be?” Big brother always says his room … he loves that it is his domain and off limits to little brother (and sister) where he can build lego cities, engineer train track schemes, etc. and they will not be toppled by wild toddler enthusiasm!

    It’s worked wonderfully for me!

*Note – when the children go stay with others, they always share a room and do marvelously!

  5. Such a cute boys’ room! I bet they will like sharing a room. I love the crib bedding!

  6. I love it. I cannot wait to see more pictures, but I can already tell you have made it a room for both of them with qualities of their individual personality. You have such talent.

  7. Loving this! Makes me want to finish out my boys’ shared room. I’ve been looking for a light fixture, and love the one you used. What is the fabric on the crib blanket??? LOVE!!

  8. also love the verse canvas. 🙂

  9. Love it! My girls have shared a room since my little one was born (4.5 years ago). It has worked out stupendously. I shared a room with my sister until I was in middle school. So, I think it works out wonderfully!

  10. I’m so glad you posted pictures, and I can’t wait to see more! The boys new space looks so nice! And from one mama to another…. so glad to hear they are sleeping well! I always love seeing the details you pull together! Just love it!

  11. Looks SO good Holly! I love it and so will they. Can’t wait to show Anisa! 🙂 Julie

hey there, i saw your pics on the lettered cottage blog…great work!! i love the room as a nursery and big boy room!!! couple questions if you don’t mind. where did you get the bedding in the nursery (or are you selling it) and where did you get the linen bumper when you updated. i’ve been looking for something JUST like that, but haven’t known where to look. my kids will be sharing here in a month or so…a girl and boy, so i wanted to make the room as neutral as possible. i would be SO appreciative. thanks Shauna

  13. how sweet! i am so glad the new arrangement is working for you and your boys! i cant wait to see more pix of their room! my son is eight and a half, and i decorated his room with trains when we moved in four years ago! he loved thomas the train but i did vintage trains except for the wall words that say “little engines can do big things” i am starting to wonder if i need to redo or just tweak! kinda sad but might be fun! hurry with the pictures i could use some ideas and inspiration!

  14. I’m going nuts over those curtains!! The pattern and the COLORS! Love the little British soldiers frammed alongside Drew’s artwork. And that storybook – my all time favorite. I read from it to Charlie before every nap and each bedtime. I think he thinks he’s little bear! 🙂

  15. I absolutely LOVE my boys sharing a room. They are 23 months apart– 2 and 4 now– and it works so well almost all of the time. I’m making roman shades with the chipper I bought from you for their room next week:) We put them together less for space reasons and more because it just seems like such a way to teach them to love and live with each other. Our only downside is that the 4 year old uses bedtime (when he thinks we can’t hear him) to test out his “potty words”– we keep hearing “POOP! POOP!!” and then the baby says “you go potty? You go poop in potty?” It’s pretty funny!

Your boys’ room is so precious– I want to see more shots of it!

  16. Hang on to those babies as long as you can. I cherish those years spent with my sister even though I didnt back then. Happy New Year!

  17. holly you are amazing. I love it. And I can’t wait to see more photos. All three boys share a room and it works wonderfully. Except when No. 3 won’t stop talking at night or when No. 1 wakes No. 3 to go to the bathroom with him in the morning because he is afraid to go down the hall on his own. Other than that, we love it.

  18. this post could not be more perfect. i am in LOVE with their bedroom!! i need to see more please:) and where is that crab blanket from? i’m obsessed with it! ps. i just realized the age gap between your two boys. we are just now getting baby fever, and h is nearing 3, so if we are blessed with another baby in the near future, the age gaps will be close to your boys. you better believe i will be asking you for advice! hehe xoxoxo

  19. You just oooooze style! I love it!

My oldest 2 are 6 and 9 (a boy and a girl) and even though they have their own rooms they sleep together every night. I love it. And they’re already talking about how much fun it’s going to be when their little sister will be old enough to sleep with them.

Can’t wait to see more pictures. Praying God’s blessings on your sweet family throughout the new year!

  20. love it! the drapes, art wall, crib blanket..those target sheets!! the nyc empire state building 😉

  21. My girls have shared a room from day 1 (8 and 2.5 now). When we moved here in February, it just worked best to put all 3 in one room- so our 5 yr old son has been added to the mix…it’s a little Peter Pan-ish and I like it! THe room looks darling- love it all!!

  22. Of course I can’t wait to see the full reveal! And would you PLEASE share where you got your lantern – need to make a lighting decision this weekend, but haven’t found anything like it! Thank you so much!

  23. Love it! My kids have had all combinations of sharing rooms (three boys/girl). In this house they all have their own rooms for the first time. Are they ever in there? No! We never know who is going to be sleeping in what room on what day. I love it though! I would love to find a house that we could have a bunkhouse type room and I think they would love it to! Can’t wait to see more pictures!

  24. I have to say the one thing that stood out in my mind were the fabulous awnings you removed from the windows! I am in the process of decorating a nursery for our first child and I have to have those! Where did they come from? I have two windowsto accommodate. Thank you! PS – Your style is fabulous!!!

  25. Oh, it’s perfect! Your look is always so inspiring. It is so effortless, I can’t get enough of it. I love that they are sharing a room! If (hopefully, *when*) we have future children they will have to share rooms since we don’t have any more. I got so tickled at your flora codeword … “organic” – cute. :o)

  26. Yes please, more pictures! My baby boy just turned one and I have never been completely happy with his room. Love this

  27. Hi! Love your room! Can you tell me your source for the cowboy fabric? The only place I can find it is out of stock, and I love love it!

  28. I also would love to know the source for your cowboy fabric. I have a baby coming in 3 weeks and that’s the only thing I lack to finish his nursery. Please, please share!
