Welcome Home Soldier

Imagine if your love was over in Afghanistan this Valentines Day?  Mine is camping out for school registration tonight.  Suddenly doesn’t seem so bad.  Well, this is the perfect day to announce a new project I am teaming up on with the design team from Milk & Honey Home!  Julie, Anisa (the Milk & Honey home girls) and I are working with an army wife in NY state to create a beautiful master bedroom to welcome home her husband in March!  What makes the project extra fun is the couple are both displaced Southerners and Milk & Honey Home and I are all Southerners too so we are excited to add some warmth to their Northern army home (Fort Drumm is nearly to CANADA apparently…quite a climate change for a Mississippi boy and girl!)! We are working fast to choose new furniture, bedding, wall color, etc…he will be home SOON!

The plan is to put a beautiful blue color on the walls and all white bedding.  Since there wont be a lot of fabric in the room (usually where i start) we are staring with wall color.  We all know how difficult it can be to find the perfect blue (or any color for that matter) so the Milk & Honey girls and I are posting today about our fave shades of blue gray..Here they are!

Mine is SW’s silvermist shown here:

and another blue {Ballroom Blue from Farrow & Ball}

{Catalina Blue from SW, Atlanta Show House shown in Traditional Home}

All of these photos are lovely and give us an idea of the color the couple has in mind, but overall their goal style is less Traditional Home and more The Lettered Cottage. We’ll discuss that in future posts.

Layla used the PB matine toile bedding and lots of white yet it still feels like a cottagey blue room.  Very much what the wife wants in her army house.  She can’t do plank walls like Layla but good for us, Layla also had a full discussion on her blog about choosing blues..check it all out here..I love she painted and photographed them side by side.

{photos from The Lettered Cottage}

I think Layla finally went with an old Martha color from Sherwin Willliams, they will still mix those colors if you ask..maybe she will pop in here and tell us!

But i was so glad she tried Wedgewood gray from BM because it is one of my favorite blues..see it here.

A lot of people will paint the bedroom Wedgewood and the adjoining bath BM Woodlawn Blue or vice versa..just a thought.

This room below from decorpad is in BNM’s Woodlawn Blue

So my recommendations for this room are BM WEDGEGOOD GRAY and OR SW SILVERMIST

Benjamin Moore HC-146 Wedgewood Gray

Of course I suggest the client always get a sample and test in the room at different times of day.

Click over here to see what Milk & Honey thinks about the paint..they love darker colors which seems really cozy and nice too! And stay tuned for more on this project.

And please, if you have the opportunity to do something for a family with someone serving in the military, do it! It’s a good thing!

{thanks to Emily at Jones Design Company for making our chevron graphic for this project, you know how us bloggers like our badges;;}

Oh and Happy Valentine’s Day!

  1. What a lovely post for Valentine’s Day…love all the blues! Will you be able to warm up a light blue and all white room that is in such a cold climate? I’m guessing that will be the job of the accessories…
    happy heart day!

  2. Good point Kelly..her sleigh bed and dresser are a deep wood tone so that will add a lot of warmth but Anisa has suggested a darker cozier shade of blue gray that may be best..be sure and jump over to the milk and honey site and see what they say…Holly

  3. Oh this is going to be good!! Love all of you gals!! Your styles are different so I can’t see what happens when you join your creative minds together!!! It is going to be soooo pretty!! Happy Heart Day to you & your boys! xo, Tess

  6. I love this project. My husband was active duty for 5 years and spent time overseas, it is so nice to have a special project like this to work on while they are gone. It is great to see people doing something so special for one of our military families.

  7. Love that you are doing this! I’m loving the Martha Driftwood Gray. It doesn’t look blue on the card but it is a blue/gray for sure. So pretty! Can’t wait to see what you all come up with!

  8. What a wonderful project! So happy that you and the Milk and Honey Home girls are doing it together. Julie is such an amazing person, so happy to be able to call her a friend.

    By the way, I love the SW silvermist.

  9. Hey Holly!
    Yep! We had the folks at Sherwin Williams mix us up a batch of Martha Stewart’s “Blue Hubbard” for our bedroom. I just LOVE the way it changes from blue, to green, to gray throughout the day!

  10. How wonderful….can’t wait to see what you guys come up with! This will be fun!

  11. Love the shout out to military families!! My husband recently (as in less than a week ago) returned from Afghanistan – best Valentines gift ever.

    Can’t wait to see the finished room and especially the unveiling to the lucky soldier!

  12. What a fabulous idea! I must say I’m partial to Wedgewood Gray. I’ve never been a “cool color” person, but I put it up about 6 months ago and LOVE it! Was a nice change from my usual “warm” picks. Can’t wait to see more!

  13. Oooh can’t wait to see what you guys come up with! With such a creative team – it’s bound to be nothing short of amazing!

  14. I have had BM Wedgewood Gray in my bath and Woodlawn Blue in my bedroom since Spring of ’07 … and I am still just as crazy about them as the day the first strokes went up. LOVE those colors. They look amazing with white (all white bedding here, plus white subways/hex in bath), black, and wood tones. Also, they look great regardless of the season … summer is bright and fresh, and in winter, they are crisp and clean. Great, great colors. And I LOVE the idea of y’all doing this for an army family. What a special thing!

  15. We had moved back stateside, bought a newer home, and my husband deployed within 6 months. I spent a lot of that “alone” time painting and decorating- I will never forget him walking around the house and turning and telling me he felt like he was in a castle! {It didn’t take much to be a step up from the desert resort!} Anyway, I can say from experience that your work on the room will benefit {the whole family} on so many levels!

  16. I’m so glad to hear that you are helping our a fellow soldier. My hasband just returned home in October 2010 after a 6 month deployment. We have 4 kiddos that were so excited to see him come home! I asked several bloggers for their help, but no one was willing to help EXCEPT Allison over at My Little Happy Place. She was such a sweet heart! With her help I was able to work on our family room. I wasn’t able to finish everything, because of budget and time restraints, but it meant SO much to me and my husband to have her support. Thanks Allison!

  17. Please forgive all of my typing errors. I was in a hurry and didn’t look it over. EEEKS!

  18. Holly, I’m so glad that you and the Milk and Honey ladies are doing this! My husband is active military as well and I know how important it is to keep yourself busy when they’re gone…this is such a precious project and it’s so wonderful that you’re working on it with this lady 🙂 I love the color suggestions too – they’re all beautiful!

  19. You are too sweet my dear, I would have died and gone to heaven had I came back from any of my deployments to find out you redid my space 🙂 What a true blessing for this young family, I can’t wait to see what you guys come up with!

  20. Oh, how fun! I can’t wait to follow this and see the end result (and here of the soldier’s surprise!!). We are in our first home and are trying to get things finished up before he leaves, as we will have to sell and move before he returns. When people ask me what advice I can give to new Military Wives, I think to myself, “get a degree in design!” It would have been ever so handy for me, at least:). Hooah to you all on the project!

  21. What a wonderful and meaningful project, Holly! I’m sure the family will be so blessed and the colours you’re thinking of are all lovely! Can’t wait to see the final result…

  22. What a wonderful idea!! I live near Syracuse, NY it’s an hour south from Fort Drum. We are so proud of our Fort Drum soldiers!! I’m sure he’ll love it! 😉

  23. Holly,
    I have to say a resounding “THANK YOU!” for supporting a military spouse who wanted to create a home for her soldier to come home to. And thank you so much for mentioning the hard work that these men and women do every day to keep us free and safe. I too am a military spouse allllll the way over here in VA, and any support from anyone (even if it is for another military family) means SO much to us in the military community. And while I may be in VA – I am not in a southern town by culture (and boy do I miss my southern roots- cuz it ain’t tea if it ain’t sweet, darlin’ !) so thank you for giving me a little shot of the south :).
