THE (gray) DOORS

Or is it grey?  Anyway we wont dwell on that.  Let’s talk doors!  I am sure many of you have seen all of the fab yellor doors or black doors shown for interior spaces lately.  Actually Joni over at Cote de Texas is the first person i ever heard say “paint cheap interior doors black throughout a house”…i thought “wow that is interesting” now it seems the rage.  And Joni and all of the others are right..it really works.

Take for instance my client Analisa’s condo.  Doors doors everwhere doors.  But black seemed well too dark and BLACK (thought it looks amazing in the photo above!) so we did Chelsea Gray by Benjamin Moore, she even did a “half strength” on some doors. and everywhere it looks amazing.

Since she hasnt painted the other door yet you can really see the difference…just amazing!  We also did this in her hallway upstairs.

BEFORE

and AFTER…ahhh much better!

Good Job Analisa! You are so fun to work with! And a pretty good painter too..so impressed you took the doorknobs off!;

And on a personal note I want to thiank you for all of the prayers, comments and emails about my mom and her illness.  I really appreciate the care and support.  She is actually having the best week she has had in several, no coincidence I am sure.  And for those of you who shared with me similar struggles, please know I am praying for you and your loved ones as well.

I love this look!! My first client that asked for black doors (ten years ago) was really ahead of her time!! Builder was not even sure he would do it. She also did all woodwork black so lots of extra work for painters! It is such a classic look and works with so many different styles. Love it!!

  3. love the look of painted doors. can make such a difference! i asked my painter to do some darker doors in my home and he looked at me like i was crazy! he believed me once he saw how great it turned out.

  4. Looks great! Black is so classic and I love the twist of doing grey and some half strength – how smart!! Good to hear your mama is better and I’ll be praying. xo

  5. Oh I love this idea.

  6. Love it! Maybe I will try it myself. So glad to hear your mom is doing better, will continue to keep her in my prayers.

  7. Wow, what a difference painting the doors made. We’re not a fan of plain white doors. Great advice! Hope you and your family have a great weekend.

Just painted all mine BM Graphite an almost black. Inherited 70’s black slate floor in foyer and hall. The doors just tie everything together now. Paint them all!

  9. Love the grey doors! I am thinking hot pink doors for the new store.

This looks great – you’re such a smartie!

  11. I completely love this! I really am going to implement it sometime this fall … now do I paint closet doors the same color? Not the hall closet (yes), but the dual closet doors in my bedroom? Bedroom is painted Silent Fog (pale greenish). The main living spaces are painted Farmer’s Almanac (neutral yellow) and similar to the photo above. I AM REALLY GOING TO DO IT!

  12. okay so funny that this is your post today i have been thinking long and hard about doing this, my only concern is how will it look up against my two girls rooms and guest rooms that are upstairs and very shabby chic?

  13. Not sure I’m brave enough to do this in my own house, but it sure looks great in your client’s space!

  14. I’d love to see more pictures from inside the rooms, I love how the hall looks

  15. we just painted ours black. as in my husband is hanging them as i’m typing this. never thought to do gray, love them!

  17. absolutely fabulous, when everything else is done with my house and I have nothing left to do the doors just may get a paint job! Janell

  18. I prefer gray with an “a,” but who am I to say? 🙂 I’ve been thinking about painting my interior doors for awhile, but I didn’t want to do black. I have a long narrow hallway with lots of doors, no natural light, so I was worried about it looking like a black hole. 🙂 But I really like the gray! Question…Do you always leave the trim painted white?

  19. wow – they really look great painted. i do think the black may have been too harsh since there are so many doors!

    thanks for the shout out!!!

    much appreciated.

  20. Hi Holly! I was doing a blog post on painted doors today and wanted to let you know that I included some of your client photos with a shout out to you and a link to your site. I truly love following your blog. It really helped inspire me to create my own site and do what I love to do as well. Keep up the great work & juggling act (I have 3 kids myself, so I get that)! -Jen
