For the love of a shelf!

I have a new shelf over my stove. I bought it a month ago, on my birthday when i was in IKEA..because don’t most people go alone to IKEA on their birthday?! ha!  Anyway, finally today I asked my hubby and he installed it and its great.  Thanks E!  I am a little concerned it will get yucky but i am putting things on it that will be washed often..do you have a shelf over your stove???

I love how some are really styled (I even saw one on Pinterest with mirrors layered on the shelf…odd even to me) and some are very bare and clearly just there for utility.

This is my IKEA fancy shelf..love the brackets.

EKBY MOSSBY Shelf IKEA

Yep its the Mossby..less than $20! With the cool Ekby brackets..sold seperately of course for an extra $10

EKBY BJÄRNUM Bracket IKEA The bracket covers the edge of the shelf. The shelf can be cut to desired width and the cut edge will be concealed.

And here is a blackberry photo of my new shelf..quickly styled while cleaning up dinner..i couldn’t wait until I could get out good camera or style properly!

My husband says if that platter slides off in the night and cracks the cooktop we are getting divorced!! Oh and I assure you he hung the shelf perfectly level..the photographer is apparently not level!;

I better not risk it..plain is better for now. Though seriously those white enamel dutch ovens in the House Beautiful photo above are awesome..does Le Creuset make white?? Or I need a pile of carrots or something to lay on the stove..i love the study styling in photos! But hey at the end of night, a cleared cooktop looks and feels so good doesn’t it?!

  1. Hi, I’m new. I was looking up stove shelves. I like ur pic of the stovetop. And I agree, looks nice when it’s all clean and crisp at bedtime. It is now April 2012.

  2. New shelf looks great.
Some double stick velcro will save your marriage 🙂
That platter is gorgeous on the shelf!

  3. I love your shelf. AND I am so glad you did not put oils or herbs up there. They get get warm every time you cook. Originally they were designed to keep food warm and store pots. I know that most are styled just for the photos but I kind of cringe when I see olive and other oils on a shelf above the stove. That is the worst place for them to be…they will go rancid which releases all kind of free radicals…YUCK!

    Anyway, yours looks GREAT!

  4. Hi Holly! First, I have that same stove, except mine is gas. I have mixed emotions for this stove because it is a weird width…We got the hood that goes with it and it had a backsplash with a …get this….WIRE shelf. Try cleaning THAT sucker! Yuck! I love the idea of the shelf, and I love my pretty hood (even though the guy put a big scratch on the front of it while he was installing it 🙁 !!!) I wish the shelf wasn’t wire, and I have my dried herbs on it, which I know I shouldn’t have up there…but they look pretty! I’m much more about having a pretty kitchen and my husband is more about having a functional kitchen. I’m going to get the Ikea shelves to put on my wall across from the stove. I want to put some white dishes on those. Your shelf looks great!!! I’m rambling because my kid is climbing on me as I try to type…sorry, but I know you understand…

  5. I would worried it would get dirty easily – you’ll have to report : ) But it is fun for some charm above the stove. I think le creuset comes in a cream – it is pretty lovely.

  6. I love these pictures! When we bought our current house there was a stainless steel shelf above the stove. It does get a little icky but I just remove everything and wipe it down once or twice a week. It is the perfect place to let dough rise which I seem to be doing once or twice a week.

  7. Oh, it looks good, Holly & Husband! I think you are right that what you put on there are things you use often that will get washed somewhat frequently. BUT, that being said, I will say I had a big white platter hanging over my stove in GA, and it was there for a good year, and I never washed it. And when we moved and I packed it up, it wasn’t that grimy … surprisingly. And I cook A LOT. So I just don’t think it’s going to be that much of an issue. Your husband threatening divorce if the platter fell off in the night … haha! … but I’m glad to see you removed it for the night. I would sure hate to see how you’d manufacture that post … “Wallpapered Closets, Round Top, and … My Man Took Off.” And, lastly, I think Le Creuset does make a creamy white.

  8. That looks great! Love those white pitchers. I have a very narrow shelf above my stove which is actually necessary for storage because my kitchen is TINY- I put up my salt and pepper grinders and my bowl with kosher salt and my lemon juicer (randomly!). The pepper makes a mess that I have to brush off occassionally but it’s been fine. Le Creuset makes both white and cream! At least, I have a cream skillet and a white small Dutch oven which is my pride and joy- I LOVE IT.
Anyway, I’ve been reading a long time but never commented- you have a lovely blog-one of my favorites- and every time there’s a new post I’m thrilled. 🙂

  9. Hi Holly! Thank you for your comment on the blog, and I am so honored to have my kitchen here with all these beautiful kitchens!! The kitchen with the carrots is my friend (a girl can dream!) Ina’s (The Barefoot Contessa) new barn kitchen. Le Creuset did make a white for a while (I bought it in white as a gift for my niece and I sooo wanted to keep it- it was beautiful!!) I think it is now more of an off-white.
Regarding upkeep on the shelf… my shelf doesn’t get yucky- I can even dust it when cleaning, and the pots themselves don’t get yucky, but the “lids” of the pots do… go figure! I only notice it if I haven’t used a particular pot in a long time. Sometimes I will go through and just wash all the lids.
I think your Ikea shelve looks fabulous! And I think it perfectly normal to go to Ikea by yourself on your birthday!!! The joke around our house is that it’s always on a Sunday (and you know how crazy it is there on the weekend) that I decide I must go to Ikea that day!! I had your range (except in gas) in Dallas and I loved it!

    all my best,
    joan

  10. I love that shelf.I am always worried about drilling into tile. It seems so permanent. Do you ever have that fear? I would have loved going to Ikea on my birthday as well!

  11. i have a white le creuset stockpot (it’s metal, not ceramic) that i bought on clearance awhile back at sur la table. i could arrange a swap… 😉

you know justin would have thrown a fit about a platter like that too. e is not alone! (maybe we should introduce them?)

  12. love the blue and white platter up there!! the kitchen with all the carrots in ina garten’s ~ my cooking idol. it’s in her barn not her home. i like the one in her home even better but it is smaller. and used to be wall papered, a strange choice in a kitchen of a serious cook. i bet she has since changed that, or maybe she always cooks in her barn. who knows. sur la table sells a line of white dutch ovens if you are looking…

  13. I love the shelf, Holly! Do you have tile backsplash? If so how did you install the shelf. I’d love to have a shelf above our stove but we have a tile backsplash & I’m not sure how to work around it.

  14. I love your shelf. I so wish we had an Ikea!! Your blue and white platter is gorgeous up there!!!

  15. LOVE the shelf!!!

I have a warming shelf on my stove, but I never turn it on…instead I stack up white plates and bowls, and it is like my favorite thing ever. It doesn’t get dirty at all, but maybe it’s because I’m more of a “food preparer” than a “cook.” 😉

  16. HI Holly!!

I adore your new stove shelf – and I must be a sick in the head as you because I find going to Ikea on one’s birthday completely acceptable and actually sounds quite fun!

  17. When I was shopping for a white Dutch oven, Le Creuset’s was a bit too ivory for me; found mine at Crate & Barrel — Mario Batali in two sizes, very white, very simple like the ones in your blog photo. I’m tempted to keep them out all the time; they are so pretty.

  18. Holly, I like your shelf and styling the best!!! Love it…will be pinning this!

  19. I really like your shelf and the white dishes on it! Earthquake putty might hold the platter in place. Thanks for sharing this glimpse of your kitchen.

  20. these are such beautiful inspiration photos! #1 and #6 is definitely my favorites 🙂

I love the way the shelf looks but can you pls. let me know how to install it on ceramic tile.

  22. hey there–i want to do the same thing with a shelf i’ve put up in other rooms before and since moving has no home–we instantly thought, spice rack over the stove–i’ve been trying to read online–anyone know if its pretty safe to drill holes in a wall behind a gas stove or are their risks to this?
