It’s so hot ceiling fans are cool

I can’t help it..we need aother ceiling fan in our house…as of now we just have one in the master but i need to add on in the boys’ room desperately.

The boys light from Barn Light Electric is so cute but we live in South Texas..they simply NEED a fan!

I’ve been scanning around and i think i like this style the best from Shades of Light. I am going to get the 44″ for them since their room is so small but it comes inthe larger size as well. Also comes in white and brown. And the light is there but not so “hangy down” and obnoxious as on some fans.

I think this CAGED option is pretty cool too but it looks a little crazy to clean..thoughts?

 Modern Caged Ceiling Fan

This is another shade option i am seeing lately..drum shades on fans!

Drum shade Energy Efficient Fan Light Kit

I have noticed a lot of bloggers updating ceiling fans with new light kits like this drum shade also from shades of light..great idea!..especially if you have a white fan and white ceiling…the fan can reallly “go away” visually then and just leaveyou with a breeze!

I think it woud look even better on a fan with white blades..that seems to be the issue with fans..blade color.  Have you ever painted the blades on your fans?? And while i think a white fan can be good if you want it to recede visually i also love a black fan because it solves the wood tone issues…this one the Castillo also from shades of light is interesting….thoughts?

 Castillo Indoor/Outdoor Ceiling Fan

I am wondering what a black fine with white drum shade might look like????

This one has an industrial look!

First Class Period Ceiling Fan 3 finishes!

this is def  a new look for ceiling fans!

Well I will let you know how the little brushed nickell one turns out for the boys!

We are off for a bit of vacation ourselves…do whatever it takes to stay cool in this heat!

  1. I like your first pic for your boys room. I hadn’t seen the drum shade for fans. Thanks for the scoop! I have the Castillo fan. I bought it from Horchow for half the price (get it when they have a coupon!) and it is gorgeous. I have it outside on my patio and it’s very substantial and has a soothing light at night. It hangs down very low though, so your ceiling needs to be high. Just wanted to share! Oh, and another thing I’ve noticed is that the lower the light fixture hangs, the more the fan is prone to wobble. Have y’all noticed that too? In Texas we need our fans on HIGH!!

  2. Lowes carries a drum shade ceiling fan as well. We had looked into it for our boy’s room. We live on the Texas coast- gotta have our fans!!

  3. Hello,

I love the first one…. We ordered ours from restoration a couple of years ago for the upstair bedrooms. They are quiet and not so big for small rooms with the 44′ inch blades. The remotes hang on the walls so they don’t get lost. Love your boys room.
    Take care, Claudia

  4. I can’t imagine living in our old house without ceiling fans! We have 12-foot ceilings and the AC has a hard time keeping up when the temps get near triple digits. We opted for simple solid black fans without a lighting fixture. They provide just enough contrast against our stained beadboard ceilings. We have recessed lights and lamps in the rooms with fans and pretty light fixtures in the rooms without (kitchen, dining, entry, etc…). I think it’s a practical balance!

    Have a great vacation! I hope it’s cooler where you’re going! 🙂

i can’t imagine living in texas without our ceiling fans! i also have the castillo, purchased at horchow, on my patio. they do look lovely, but due to the dimpled glass they cast a disco-ish light. lovely on my patio, but maybe unnerving indoors. i would love that last one in my boy’s room, but it kind of blows my kids room budget!

  6. Love the fan you’ve chosen for your sons’ room! I’m digging the retro/industrial look of ceiling fans these days. Much as I love a pretty chandelier over a bed, a ceiling fan makes life so much more comfortable… especially in this oppressive heat!

    Enjoy your vacation 🙂

  7. I love the last one, but we have 8 foot ceilings in our house, so it would never work. We have to have fans in Tennessee, too. I hate it, but what are you going to do? It’s not like I can go into my toddler’s room and say, ‘Suck it up! I know it’s hot, but that light fixture goes PERFECT in here!’ LOL!

  8. Excellent choice of fan Mrs. Mathis! We have the minke air fans in the smaller size in all of our bedrooms – and in this heat, they are a must! Congratulations on your fur kid. Your boys will be in heaven. Enjoy your vacation!

  9. I have that same one in my master bedroom! Love it! Our family room fan is also cool…has a similar caged look to the one you posted, but a bit more retro.

  10. It hit a 2012 high here in Portland today – 89 – but our ceiling fans started running about 10 degrees ago! (We’re wimps, I know.) I, too, am looking for a new ceiling fan for our boys’ bedroom/bonus-room. I just saw this fan at our local LampsPlus, but thought it was a little too retro for our home. There was a similar one, though, that had a little more traditional look. (All ceiling fans ship free right now at LampsPlus.) What I didn’t see were the drum lights, so thanks for that tip. Not sure I love the look, but it’s an improvement over the outdated fixture in our bedroom now. Even in the Pacific Northwest, air-flow trumps style!

  11. oh gracious I wanted a chandelier in our master so badly…but then my husband talked sense into me and we bought a ceiling fan instead. i’m SO glad!!! it’s been a lifesaver the past couple of weeks! i wasn’t aware of the drum shade option though…man! too cool!

  12. We put ceiling fans up immediately in our new house and thank goodness! This 100+ heat would be unbearable without it.

    I love those drum shades.

  13. I really like that last one and should put one in my sons’ room too. What I want is the double one, but they are just so darn expensive. Fantastic Fans has one called the Acqua Dual Head Rotating Fan that looks kind of retro, so I like that style. Plus I think it would do a better job cooling our odd L-shaped bedroom they share.

I agree if you live in the south, you need a ceiling fan. I love the one you picked out for the boys room. All of ours are aero-dynamic so that would be somewhat ascetically pleasing…but keep us cool in the Memphis heat.

  15. I’m beginning to design my baby boy’s room who is due in October and I wanted to put a similar light that you currently have in your boys room but because Indianapolis has been unseasonable hot this year and his room will be on the second floor I think as much as I don’t want to a ceiling fan is going to be a must. I love the idea of attaching a drum shade to a plain fan! Thanks for this post! I can’t wait to see your boys new fan!!

  16. White blades show all of the dust and grime in no time, trust me!

  17. Sometimes ceiling fans are just needed. I can’t imagine our living room without one. And we’re putting one in our new bedroom too…not my first choice but hey sometimes functionality wins over aesthetics. (Plus, nowadays they don’t look like the ones from the ’80s) We put an industrial-type one in my son’s room and love how it looks in there. It reminds me of your first choice up there but for like half the price. Got it at Lowe’s. Here’s a link to my son’s room so you can check it out. Hope that helps and good luck with your choice! http://www.mapleleavessycamoretrees.com/2012/02/our-refined-pallet-ceiling.html

  18. Yep, as much as we all strive for great design sometimes practicality just wins…especially in South Texas! Can’t wait to see the update.

  19. I vote for the first one. cute, clean, simple
No on cleaning that cage one – boo

  20. Thank you, thank you, thank you! We are building an addition and ceiling fans are a must in this Texas heat. I have had such a hard time finding one that isn’t terrible! These look so much better than anything I have found!

  21. It is hot too at my house especially upstairs! I took all the ceiling fans out and put chandeliers cause I love them-except in my daughters room and found a really great one at Lowes no less that was acrylic! Love the ones you found!

  22. We have that first one in Harry’s Room and the playroom. In the Master and Guest room we did an acrylic fan that I absolutely love. The only think I will warn on the first fan is that you have to use the remote (we had an electrician install one into the wall so we wouldn’t lose it) and the light isn’t very bright even at the highest setting. But it looks good if you have to have a fan! Hope you are well.

  23. Thank you for this post. All of my favorite designers and blogs almost always poo poo ceiling fans. We live in North Florida and we have a ceiling fan in almost every room. Do I love the way they look? No ~ but we couldn’t live without them. As always, you’ve managed to find some great options.

  24. I love, love, love the black fan, and especially the light that is part of it, though I suppose dust will show quite well on it.

  25. Love the drum shade idea! What a great & simple way to update a boring ceiling fan. Great post!

  26. I have painted my ceiling fan blades white before. I used spray paint and it turned out wonderfully. The blades are removable, so it’s a really easy project. I wrote about it a couple of years ago.

  27. Exhale Fan – World’s first truly bladeless ceiling fan.

  28. Your first choice is what we have in my son’s room and he loves it. I have 2 other ceiling fans by Minka. We bought my son’s from Amazon because it was much cheaper there. The other two I got off of ebay at a fraction of the retail price. One is the two fans in cages that rotate. Everyone notices it and loves it. We’ve been very happy with all.

  29. I found your blog on pinterest and have been enjoying looking around. We’re looking for a new rug for our family room and I like the simplicity of the one in your boys’ room. Could you tell me what kind of rug it is? Is it comfortable for a small child to play on? How does it do with stains? Thanks!

  30. great issues altogether, you just received a emblem new reader.
What might you suggest in regards to your publish that you made a few days ago?

    Any positive?

  31. Definitely believe that which you said. Your favorite justification
seemed to be on the internet the simplest thing to be aware of.

I say to you, I definitely get irked while people consider worries that they plainly don’t know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top as well as defined out the whole thing without having side-effects , people could take a signal. Will probably be back to get more. Thanks

  32. Hi there, I enjoy reading through your article
post. I like to write a little comment to support you.

  33. Spot on with this write-up, I really believe that this web site needs a lot more attention.
I’ll probably be back again to see more, thanks for the information!

  34. Hi I am so delighted I found your blog page, I really found you by accident, while I was browsing on Digg for something else, Anyhow I am here now and would just like to say kudos for
a fantastic post and a all round interesting blog (I also
love the theme/design), I don’t have time to go through it all at the moment but I have book-marked it and also added in your RSS feeds, so when I have time I will be back to read a great deal more, Please do keep up the awesome job.

  35. Was thrilled to find this blog, and am coming in quite late on the conversation… only by a few years. I love the last fan, but the link is a different fan. Do you know who makes that fan? I love it.
