I love working on spaces for children. I want to show you a quick peek at some recent and ongoing projects. I am currently working on a playroom remodel in East Texas and hope to show more of that soon. In the meantime, you have to see how my client in New York recently added this under the stair playhouse nook in her basement! So cute..we are adding a little sign or numbers soo and she has painted the inside so it’s really coming along.. I love the dutch door.
Batman apparently approves of the space as well! Oh and don’t you love how they used the ceramic tile “wood flooring” on the floor..smart choice for this space!
The light is from Lowes and the carpenter just hinged the little window and of course no glass.
I love the little vintage mail slot..and the dutch door…The navy blue window trim keeps this little playhouse from being too girly in this house of little boys. I can certainly relate to that line of thinking;;
Below is a space I am working on closer to home in The Woodlands, Texas.
We just need one one blind hung and then the installation will be complete but I have to show you a sneak peek! I love how the fabrics aren’t particularly just for children…but grouped together with fun accessories and art from the homeowners own childhood room make it feel like a young space ready for when the grandkids are in town. The client has such fond memories of that circus art, it is really special to her and I am so glad we used it in the room. I love how it works with the fabric and other vintage accessories but the elegant headboards really fit with the overall style of the home. It turned out so well…I can’t wait to get better shots..these are just from my phone obviously. This is actually a “grandkid guest room” so the white headboard should be fine (in case you are wondering)..if it was an everyday kid room..maybe not;; I love the industrial old school inspired cabinet and sugarboo art. I will show the big picture soon. There are actually two beds. I love matching twin beds for little ones. And yes I also like chevron shams and soda crates for kids as well. You may have noticed!;

In the meantime, please tell me about your favorite things to include in kid spaces or to make adult spaces more kid friendly. Maybe its baskets of children’s book or little vintage chairs or stools at the coffee table…I want to hear what works in your home!
I just finished up my own playhouse under the stairs! Such a great use of an often overlooked space. Kid spaces just might be my favorite. I love including something vintagey from Mom, Dad or Grandma’s own childhood. It adds a sense of family.

Holly, those are both amazing spaces! Our girls playroom has an antique Canadiana pine pedestal table which we use as a craft table (with a tablecloth on it, of course), and an old bookcase which we transformed with paint, beadboard, and baskets. I would love to incorporate some fun fabrics eventually, as you have done here, and you have me thinking about that area under the stairs…..
The colorful fabric is called CORNWALL….the soda crates i have found on ebay and etsy but also in local junk shops. Find the biggest, tackiest antique mall you can find on an Interstate and i bet you will find one. They also abound at Round Top and other antique fairs.
Oh goodness! What a fun space under the stairs. What child wouldn’t love that!? And I love the guest room for the grandkids. I’m agreeing with everyone else about the fabric. It’s so bright and colorful (something I usually shy away from). And the art is wonderful! can’t wait to see the full picture. Ella has an upholstered headboard that is white, but it’s slipcovered so if it ever needs washing we just slide it off. So far we haven’t had a problem with it. I think slipcovers are key when making a space kid friendly. If we ever get new living room furniture, it’ll be slipcovered!

You do so many things well, but I think kid spaces come so naturally to you. And kid parties, too! My girls have their own ideas about their spaces now. As you know, that’s been challenging for me. Means I have to consider more opinions than just my own! Wink!
Love both of these kids rooms! I’m now trying to think of how we could better use the space under our stairs!
One of my favorite kids room features, which I did in my daughters room, is a large fabric-covered bulletin board. It added color when my daughter was a baby. Now that she’s beginning to produce some artwork it’s a great place to hang her creations! At this point I’m still careful to keep tacks out of reach but, in a few years, I expect she’ll begin curating the collection. (Here are pictures of her room on Apt. Love those spaces! The fabrics are great and my would love that playhouse 🙂 At our house we are all about slipcovers, on everything and using not-too-precious washable fabrics. That and easy Lego storage make life easier for everyone.

I LOVE the little door & window under the stairs. That little batman is going to have some good memories playing in there when he is older! Hmmm, must have for kids rooms? I would say somewhere to display books so that they are forward facing and easily accessible for little hands to grab and read. Out of all the beautiful rooms you put together, Holly, I most enjoy seeing your kid spaces!!!

that room is SO so SO sweet. Some of my favorite colors together. The basement thing is so much fun. Makes me want to re do our basement area.
Such cute spaces! Where did you find a little tiny dutch door? It’s so cute! I have a under the stair space but mine goes into my dining room. I would love to do this but do you think it would be okay to do?

I don’t suppose you remember the model of the light from Lowes? It looks like it is the perfect size and I’m having difficulty finding one that is appropriate!
