I just finished up this kid space for one of my favorite clients and I wanted to share! I get lots of questions about kid spaces and especially boys’ rooms. Some people think boy rooms are hard but really with all of the great vintage and industrial inspiration going on, its always fun for me to do boy rooms!
This little boy is 7 years old.
He loves to read, Texas football and baseball, history and insects!
The walls are Martha Stewart Bedford Gray (from Home Depot) and the IKEA bunk beds are painted in one of my favorite colors, BM Chelsea Gray.
The nightstand is the Aiden from World Market, another fave of mine. I love the books and toolbox my client found. And the Pottery Barn kids lamp is the perfect touch. We had discussed simple quilts from Target or Pottery Barn for the base bedding, but the mom ended up getting these at IKEA and they work great. The sheets and plaid accents pillows are from Target. In fact the plaid Target pillows really inspired the entire design of gray and orange. The wooden letters are from Restoration Hardware kids. The shams in the tiny print are from West Elm. I love mixing bedding!
The vintage map add ads a bit bit more color to all of the gray. I love orange and green and navy together for boys!
The light is one I have used before for little boys and its a great value and look..the fisherman pendant from PBkids. love it!
The rug is from Dash and Albert
The IKEA spice ledges were painted navy for a little color and the navy stripe rug also gave some blue to the orange and gray scheme. The kid sheets are from Target. Sheets are a good place to allow your kids to make a choice and choose something you might not want a quilt or duvet and they add some color!
I love this fox pillow, that THRESHOLD brand at Target is really knocking it out of the park! The arrow pillow is from them too!
This room is small and there is a playroom nearby but we did a few faves in the decor like his dinosaurs to guard his prized football!
Bins hold paperback reader books and little things that boys collect.
The little pennants are from etsy and mom just strung them together. The gray tweed and plaid totes with leather handles are also THRESHOLD from Target.
This room is for just one boy but his mom says he enjoys playing and reading on the top bunk! Mom has the word art custom made on canvas using she and Dad’s own words, including a line about Texas Tech football! You can also see a peek of the drapes here. They did not photograph well because of the sun but they are the chocolate grainsack stripe from Ballard. Sold out for now but I hope they bring them back. They are a great drape!

I think to myself, I have most of the things she is decorating with, why can’t I put it together like that, oh well! i do have a question- I have the Anthro animal heads that you used in your boys room. How did you hang them? I tried hanging the first one on a nail and it was heavy and the nail sliced through a little of the paper. I don’t want to damage it. What did you do? Thank you so much!!!
Bunks are always such a great and efficient use of space. Fun to plan a boys room around. I like those pillows, especially the fox one!

Holly, did she paint the beds herself or have them painted? I’m just wondering how much of an investment (in time or money) I should consider.
Hi Tiffany! I painted the bed with a roller, brush and applied two coats of paint before assembling the bed. It’s much easier to paint the bed before it’s assembled.. I set up two saw horses and bought two 8 ft. long 2×4’s and put the boards across to paint. Lightly sand the boards (this helps the paint stick) and wipe the off with cheese cloth. I rolled and used a brush. I used one gallon of semi-gloss paint. There are a lot of boards so it took me two Saturday’s to complete the project. However, hubby said it was easy to put together. Hope this helps:)

Holly, this room is AWESOME!!! I’ve been dreaming about my boys’ shared room and so many of these elements are what I have been contemplating. The mix and match bedding, industrial vibes, fun and funky pillows. I had asked my dad to build us bunk beds, but they are kind of low down on his “to do” list….I’m in love with those IKEA bunks painted. Wow…what a difference! Great job!

I scan pinterest all the time, this time looking for bunk beds, and this is the best boys room I’ve ever seen. You have a special gift! This bunk bed is great. I just bought it this weekend for my son at Ikea ($159). We bought the $79 mattress for it also at Ikea. Now I’m wondering how much time she spent painting it because there are a lot of wood pieces. It has three large stickers on one piece of wood. I’m not sure how to get them off. I heard Shout will get off the sticky adhesive. My son was so excited about his new bed that I didn’t get to paint it first before putting it together. He wanted it put together as soon as we got home. It came together in about 2 hours (with two toddlers under foot).

Love this room and totally inspired to do my boys’ room! I have been going crazy trying to figure out a nice color to go with the navy, brown, and grey stuff I already have – THANK YOU! I so love orange in the mix! I really like how you put this room together and still managed to keep it functional, which I think is key for kiddos’ rooms.
