January Creative Class * Oregon bound

My Creative class in January will be held in a quaint little town outside of Portland.  I am so excited to visit the Pacific Northwest and do this class in my friend Darci’s darling shop!  MD Haney & Co is located in McMinnville, Oregon, in a beautiful wine country area just Southwest of Portland.  Can’t wait to get there and meet up with my friend Jill Hinson and others from the area.

img_4086

The class will be all about how to FRESHEN YOUR HOME FOR A FRESH NEW YEAR! Topics and discussion will focus on finding your style, mixing patterns, favorite paint colors and materials and the basics related to decorating your home in a “Pinterest, perfect world” while remaining authentic and true to yourself and your budget and lifestyle! Darci will be doing a little guest speaking as well explaining a bit about the paints she uses in her shop..she is an expert in both MILK and CHALK PAINT.

I can’t wait to see her shop!  And her nearby cottage..she has both a shop AND lodging!

Isn’t the cottage so cute..I can’t wait to see it!  The cottage sleeps 5 and if you and friends want to rent it for weekend it is first come first serve… click here to book!

Curious Details’ Art Shop

Oh y’all this is good. Really really good. Did you know my friend Becki at Curious Details has opened an art shop??  Three wonderful cow prints and more items coming soon… Check it out here.
Becki says “Part of the inspiration for the wood panels project is that I love original art and was inspired by my work travels to the nearby Texas countryside( which I dearly love!). The project combines my passions of design, photography and road trips.”
What I love is that all of the work is original, photographed and edited by Becki. AND Printed in the USA

I thought my fave was the one below with the moon…GOODNIGHT MOO…but now I am loving the one above too!  It’s a hard decision.
becki-griffins-curious-details-8
The moon is definitely magical….I guess I just love them all to be honest!
goodnight-moo-final-edit
She calls this one below modern moo..I can see it in a nursery..well anywhere.  They are so versatile!
modern-moo-final-edit
She chose the wood panels to print on as an alternative to canvas or paper because they have a warm, clean and organic feel. Because they’re printed on wood they feel like an important substantial piece when they’re hung. No additional framing is needed. Look at the easy peasy sturdy hanger on back!
And they fit in perfectly with the clean modern farmhouse style we all love ( and other styles as well!!)
about-wood-panel-collage
The finished product has a subtle painterly feel which given the piece interesting depth.
She is having a Christmas sale too and the code is HOLLYJOLLY2016

Like I said, more is coming.. I hear talk of a beautiful paint horse soon and some coastal subjects and trees.  We all need good art and many of you need large art for big spaces in your home..these come in various sizes and they have meaning and are made in Texas (Becki) and produced in USA….wouldn’t you rather invest in something like that for your walls over something from Pottery Barn etc… I know i sure would..i just need more walls!
Congratulations Becki on this new venture…it’s about time sister..we needed this option! SO GOOD!

Louisiana Home Tour!

screen-shot-2016-12-04-at-6-13-18-pm

I have been working on this beautiful home in Louisiana for nearly two years…since the beginning stages and plans!  So its such a delight to see it come to fruition and finally be a warm, cozy home for my client’s family!  I posted about the construction here.

lopezconstruction

And now it has boxwood and Christmas decorations and the sounds of children inside !

screen-shot-2016-12-04-at-6-13-06-pm

The homeowners were asked to participate in a local home tour that will be this Saturday evening, December 10th, in Thibodaux, Louisiana.  Details are here and  at the bottom of this post if you would like to attend and or donate to the cause of the tour.

Here are a few sneak peeks! (these are just phone pics so they do not give this home justice but they are better than nothing right) enjoy!

Homebuilder on this project was Chris Ledet Homes and the architect was Mike Bougeois. The fresh garlands and wreaths from Green Acres in Thibodaux, with magnolia woven in by yours truly;;  They were all so patient and as you can see, extremely talented!

screen-shot-2016-12-04-at-6-00-45-pm

Of course we decorated with lots of magnolia, simple satin ribbon (it is red not pink;) and oyster trees! I love that the house is new but has such a historic feel…so many Louisiana elements like brick floors, wood walls and floors, Audubon prints, elevated porches and gas lanterns! I had to add some of my faves too like the brass lights in kitchen and the art from Lindsay Letters for the season.

lopezchristmascollage1

The house is such a pretty setting too..the trees down there just make me gasp..such beauty.

The dining room is right inside the front door with study to right…classic central hall design.

screen-shot-2016-12-04-at-6-00-30-pm

This antique french dining table that I baby’d in storage for over a year came from Marburger Farm.  So fun to see it finally decorated with greens ready for entertaining!  The drapery fabric is Pierre Frey and the chairs were monogrammed and reupholstered via Gracie’s Custom Interiors in Houston! All of the drapes in the home were constructed by Ronda Crockett of Jouli Designs (you can reach her at 985-232-2519).

lopezdiningroom

The outdoor ribbon is actually a red herringbone..its reads a soft red/pink from a distance but you get close it is red herringbone..it is from True Blue Home..in fact many of the accessories in the home came from True Blue Home as well as new furnishings from Ethan Allen (the kid friendly sofas) and antiques from Leftovers Antiques in Brenham!

This particular light from Visual Comfort is discontinued so glad we got it for this house..along with gray cabinets, old rug and brass faucet.

Chairs below…Schumacher floral on front and stripe on back…and the secretary is an early Round Top find by the client!

Upstairs is a nice great play space with natural light..that entire front shed window IS PLAYROOM!

lopezplayroom

Les Indiennes pillow from True Blue Home (i get all of my Les Indiennes and John Robshaw pillows there fyi) worked in with Christmas gifts and pillow!

lopezplayroomgifts

Notice the Lindsay Letters 12 days of Christmas cards on the garland, big blue dot pillow from True Blue Home

and street signs from Old Glory Antiques!  And the mudroom, back downstairs entrance is on the left with more Les Indiennes pillow From TBH and banner from my pop up shop…so cute!

lopezchristmascollage3

I love this entire extended family..the hospitality down there is amazing and I wish I could be at the tour but I hope some of you can attend.  I will be home with my own Bebes;; but I will be there in spirit!

lopezchristmas2

You will not be disappointed with the tour and especially the beautiful people!

Christmas faves

Sharing some of my fave photos of Christmas past today . . .

I think this might be my fave holiday image ever from my own “work” or home;

stockingsclose

And I loved this cozy Christmas nest in our “new old house”…this room will always be an important part of our history.

studytree

It’s so interesting how the same furniture and things can look so comforting and the same in different settings but also so different in different homes..the kids and I still sit around this scrubbed pine table every day!

diningroom kitchentablecloser

When it comes to Christmas I love red and I love wreaths, lots of wreaths….and lots of bowls of ornaments!

IMG_4686

Wide red ribbon for the win! The two pine pieces in this room were so awesome and I no longer have them…”shared them” with clients when we moved..so glad to know they are being enjoyed in their homes now…

tvroomxmaas

I miss this house and the promise I thought it held for our family but I don’t regret the beauty I was able to create here, it was all part of our story.

Clinging to the Advent season and its true meaning….clinging to the the words of C.S. Lewis as well!

It’s upon us y’all…December is here..let’s do this!

Fall Creative Class & Gratefulness

Well our last class of the year has come and gone and it was so much fun.  We tackled a huge topic… DECORATING + BUSINESS….wow that is broad topic there Ms Holly Mathis what were you thinking??  Well it was a broad topic, yes for sure but I hope we can do a follow-up class possible and keep our message boards hopping building a “community” (sorry I had to use that word) for these discussions, they are so important! And it was a great day with a lot of good information and connections….Just when I think classes might be too much to juggle with decorating the Holy Spirit really shows up (I feel a little dramatic saying that but its true I think) and I realize  “this is good this is really good…let’s keep doing this!”

fallthankfulpumpkins

I am just thankful people want to come and are so open to share…it has been an amazing experience to do this open studio and class experiment.

As usual we started in the studio with mimosas and introductions and our first teaching time! And beautiful place cards by Dionne from Nib & Pixel!

a-holly-mathis-table-768x908

We did not get a group photo this time (that is what happens with Natalie Dawley or Natalie Lacy Lange don’t make it;;; missed y’all) but I loved meeting Bethany from The House of Figs and she did a wonderful post on our day on her blog..thank you Bethany, you are a total doll!

a-holly-mathis-selfie-768x768

We had a large class, over 20 people and so diverse, love that, including a precious couple from Tennessee!

For lunch we headed to my home for a box lunch on the porch..the weather was perfect..so grateful for that miracle too!  Flowers by Maggie at Bramble in Bee and food by Royers Round Top Cafe..yummy!

fallcanflowers

I love these fun little cans that Maggie found for some of our workshop table..they are small enough it left room to work but a punch of color…and she loaned me all of her extra fall pumpkins so I finally got to play with having a pumpking explosion…she even  had a few with lettering from @calligraphycult …. so fun!

falltable2

Everyone got a notebook full of info and room to for more research and notes..our plan is to keep in touch and tackle and research more topics together over next few months!  Everyone also received a Miss Mustard Seed sample pack of paint, a Royers Cutie pie and Stoney Peak Candle!  All of my fave things right now!

fallnotebokk

More pumpkins, pumpkins, pumpkins!

fallpumpkin
Hunter helping with clean up later that day..he can pick up some pretty large pumpkins in his mouth!

huntercollage

I just had to get one more #fall #grateful #thanksgiving post in before Christmas cranks up…I am grateful for so much…my clients and the opportunity to do this work, my Saviour and Creator that makes it all possible and sees me on the good days and bad..the last couple of years have been such a roller coaster journey not all instagramable pictures of success for sure..but at the end of the day there is much to be grateful for… THANKS BE TO GOD!

Watch Instagram and the blog for info on more classes possibly in 2017…I know I am definitely at least doing one in late January 2017 in the Pacific Northwest and more in Texas possibly later in the spring…let me know what topics you are interested in such as . . .

**more creative business related topics, general decorating classes, new builds/choosing surfaces or something else??

I am praying for more balance and margin and present time with my kids in 2017…trying to find the sweet spot between classes, the studio and pop up shop and residential work.  The Pop Up will close after Christmas (open Saturdays in December) and only reopen for special shows possibly in the future or online, not totally certain.  Same with classes, may offer some online or quarterly?  Its all successful but only one Holly so I am praying for wisdom and ways to edit and balance to give the best to my kids, myself, my clients and the Lord and be the best version of Me that He made me to be..not an Instagram or curated version..just HIS VERSION..SO Jesus, THY WILL BE DONE!

And God bless YOU as you look toward ADVENT and new beginnings as well  and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Real Life House-Brenham Edition

reallifehomes44

Another installment of REAL HOMES coming to you from Brenham, Texas.  Brenham is the home of BLUE BELL ICE CREAM and is a charming little town….all of WASHINGTON COUNTY, TEXAS is beautiful and full of history and charm so this is an idea place for real house living.

front

frontporch

My friends Aubrey & Mitchell Davis recently remodeled this “real home” near Brenham, Texas, where all live!  Brenham is a great place to live and raise a family and they knew this fixer upper could be perfect for the right family.  Aubrey is a budding real estate agent and Mitchell is a contractor in the area!  Can you believe the befores of this property?  And when I say PROPERTY that really is the strength of this project (along with the people involved)!

frontunfinished

This house is located on a lovely rural road out from the town of Brenham with nice trees and a bit of land.  That made this venture make a little more sense but I have to admit, when I first walked in the BEFORE space I thought they might be a little nuts and definitely had a hard road ahead.

This collage shows more BEFORES, check that one in the MIDDLE! YIKES!

hummingbirdbefore

But Mitchell forged ahead with construction and Aubrey chose the finishes, and colors and THEY DID IT, they pulled this one off.  I am so impressed with the job y’all did on this guys!  Y’all are hardworking and have great style.

Aubrey and Mitchell are hardworking and persevered… that is what it takes to remodel and “flip”!

Now on to their best project yet…a NEW BABY..the Davis family is due ANY DAY! If you can flip a house, parenting will be a breeze…NOT!  The intensity can actually be very similar at times but I know y’all will be great parents and I can’t wait to see more homes and projects in your future!

Mitchell is accepting new project so if you want to reach give him a ring at 979.251.4872 or email him at mitchell.davis@millcreekmgmt.com

Real Homes- New England edition

I want to purpose to show more “real homes” in some future blog posts…homes I have consulted on but not done”full service expensive remodeling or decorating consults” on, just mini consults or “fluffing” here and there…sure these are very nice homes, and they may be anything from historic homes to lived in suburban or 1950s ranch style, whatever the case it does not matter.  All houses and homes have assets and things that can be tweaked and played up or down. My goal is show some non-perfect, non-Pinterest “real life” living and  photography in all of its BEAUTY and NORMALCY. And yes I know “normal” is subjective but let’s remember what real life, lived in homes look like without professional photography and perfect styling..they are still lovely, and this one is really lovely!

reallifehomes44

Indeed this one is a treat, straight from New England!

The email from the homeowner went like this

I am interested in design, but I am looking for someone to help me finish my living room, family room, dining room, stairs, etc.  I have most of my furniture, but I need help with pillows, accessories, paint colors, lighting, etc.  I just bought my house three years ago.  It is our forever house, so I am taking my time to decorate it.  It is a sea captain’s house built in 1825, but renovated in around 1910.

Of course she had me at 1825 and Sea Captain’s home! And then she randomly showed me a photo of the kitchen (wish I had it, it was pre the lights and very lived in looking but i could see the beautiful bones beyond the backpacks and shoes…

I helped with pillow fabrics and pulling together the living room etc with a few accessories and coffee table. And a choosing new lights for kitchen. Online consults can be as big or little as needed!

weeideaswithrug

You notice my favorite combo and starting points but evolved into more pattern and blue which was fine!… Ticking stripe for slipcovers, coffee table ideas and of course blue and right and neutral paint, the art is by a local artist Alison Hill, some of the other art in the room is by the family!

Online consults include basic boards but also some “crazy boards” with notes to illustrate and ideas for narrowing in on patterns and colors.  Some honest back and forth saying “you know I don’t love that KW ikat” or “I do!”

carlypillows2

When you are working online sometimes choosing fabrics can be a bit of a puzzle but it is possible for sure especially with etsy and the willingness of showrooms and vendors to send samples! And lots of email!

weelivingroom

Another real life aspect to these photos, which are simply phone pictures from the client, is they also show REAL LIFE transitions, meaning one picture shows her new rug in place and others show the temporary natural jute rug in place.  Because real life means sometimes you have to move the nice new red rug to the dining room until you find one for that space! It’s a good and reminds me how homes are always evolving and shifting!

weecollage

weechair

And the kitchen oh the kitchen!! Once the homeowner sent me a random phone picture of the kitchen I was REALLY smitten with this home.  The kitchen addition/remodel is exquisite with the beams and floors and now with the new lights!

wee1

Look at the floor boards and beams…they did an amazing remodel..all I did was choose the lighting for island which the homeowner then ordered over phone and email with Cindy at True Blue Home.  I love working with True Blue  because they are true blue Visual Comfort retailer, unlike some of the flash sales sites that sell similar lights.   When you order through True Blue Home in Texas you get the full guarantee of Visual Comfort and more personalized customer service if there are any hiccups!  And wow that brass with the beams and look she has mixed finishes..brass lights (gilded iron to be specific) polished nickel on the kitchen hardware and bronze on the stools..and boy does it work!

weekitchen2

Sometimes all you need is a few new pillows, a ticking stripe slipcover on an old chair, a rug or lights in kitchen…it is a process and it takes time but when it eventually starts to take shape it is so worth it.  My client’s husband is an artist so she already has some great art and of course the bones of an 1825 house doesn’t hurt!

fullsizerender-4

And the big point is not to compare..her real life kitchen is amazing and her home is full of history but I bet she lacks big bathrooms and closets?! We all have different assets in our homes that we can play up..for some it is a kitchen or a porch or natural light or location.  Embrace the positive and try to downplay the things you love least.

Dreams DO come true

Sometimes GOOD things finally happen.

9953m

{Thank you to my dear friend Natalie Lacy Lange for stopping by and capturing these pics on the day I first opened!}

Not to sound ungrateful that life isn’t always perfect or that there aren’t always some small blessings each and every day, even on the worst day.

But sometimes you get to see a dream come to fruition that has been growing in your heart for years, maybe decades and then finally, finally you get closer and closer and finally it happens.

And you get to exhale and say “God did this” through the help of others who love and encourage you to not give up and that “no you aren’t crazy.”  In a million ways. He provides.  He truly DOES see the desires of our hearts. I truly believe that.  He knows us like no other.  It isn’t always a yes answer. Sometimes He says no. or later.  But sometimes it gets to be a yes.  OH HAPPY DAY!  Thank you Lord for seeing me and making me the way you did and letting me be ME in this big wide world.

This small studio isn’t full on retail for me.  It’s a pop up shop and part of my office, my working studio where I work on homes and design which is my real job ( a dream in itself I know).. It is crazy to juggle. But to finally take it another step and to just be able to finally hang out an OPEN sign for my own little space, even if its temporary, it feels so good.  So keep dreaming you dreamers, staying true to your calling and dreams does feel pretty darn good.

It is more than just a pillow and playing shop.  It’s about following dreams and taking chances and leaning in to tough time and leaning into a heavenly Father like never before!

9939-1

This building is old and dusty and often leaks but look at that old brick and original beadboard ceiling..inspires me everyday. Old and layered and full of story!

9919

And the Eugene brass pendants are just the best, I first fell in love with them when helping design the True Blue Home store in nearby Chappell Hill and they are just great lights! They are available via True Blue Home and one of the most reasonable Visual Comfort pendant lights which makes them even better! They work in so many spots and come in two sizes.

9935

Below is a portion of my Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint waxes and Common Sense soaps (all natural so good!)

This cabinet is painted Miss Mustard Seed’s Farmhouse white paint color!~

POP UP SHOP opening!

My very own little POP UP SHOP is opening TOMORROW in my office/studio in historic downtown BRENHAM, TEXAS at 220 East Alamo Street!!!  I am so excited!

hollymathis_popup_2016_ig_v4

Since I found this space a  year ago I knew it was too much space for just an office but it is such a wonderful place and I have spent the last year experimenting with what it should be…a place for classes, local art, pop up vintage or other goods??. . .. and so the experiment continues!  I plan to be open “most” Thursday/Friday/Saturdays from 10 am -6 pm.  Since this is a Pop Up Shop and not an official store you will need to check on Instagram before you make a trip but I can guarantee I will be opens these days during Texas Antique Week.  I continue to consult with and adore TRUE BLUE HOME in Chappell Hill (one town over)  this is just my own little venture in closer to our home- where we live and go to school! So don’t get confused, True Blue Home is in Chappell Hill and is open and thriving and my Pop Up & Studio are in Brenham, 15 miles a way in the downtown district, one block east of the courthouse! So now you have two places on your “must see list” when you come down Hwy 290 from Houston to Austin!  Not to mention Leftovers Antiques (which has expanded!) and all of the other wonderful shops here and Round Top.  Whether it is during Antiques time or not, there is so much to do out here in Washington County, Texas! And we all carry different things so you don’t want to miss anything!

What will I have???  Well, first of all I am excited to be an official retailer of Miss Mustard Seed Paint and I will have the paint and brushes and waxes in stock!

popupcollage
And books, old and new…cards, candles and of course a few rugs and random accents, and pillows we must have pillows right!
