Three generations ONE roof

That is right, we moved the week after Christmas.  Not something I really recommend (“duh” as my friends, the lovely Fairbrother women, would say) but we survived.  Barely.  Merging households is NOT for the faint of heart either, but again we are surviving and dare I say thriving once again.  Everyone hates moving or at least understands its work but it always has its upsides too: organization, culling, throwing out, a fresh start, decorating opportunities and more. And as always, the opportunity to be grateful. We are moving . . . yes it’s work, it’s the holidays but hey we get to be homeowners and we have running water and heat and on and on.  So all is good with the actual move, on the flip side especially.

academydoor

{I promise I have scraped these windows and adding new door hardware since this photo! BTW the exterior color is SW Dress Blues, that project was completed by the previous owner, Denetta McKelvy, she did so much!}

So this is the deal.  My mom had a cute tiny house on quaint Baylor St in our little town…the kids and I lived a few blocks over near their school (along with my walk-closet I do miss daily, I can admit it). It was great..she could get away at her house and rest and we could have our own time. In fact, the house the children and I were renting was so cute and wonderful it is being feature in the May issue of Country Living! But we didn’t own it and inevitably we spent a LOT of time together with Nana…most meals, some nights if I worked late she would have to go home to a dark house.  She did our laundry and picked up kids many days. (HUGE HELP be jealous) Oh and did I mention we (mainly she) are chronic house hunters.   So after nearly two years of me paying rent (“you are not building any equity” says Nana over and over, did I mention she is a Real Estate Broker) we started looking at properties often.  And driving our friends crazy with “how much would it cost to rewire this house and plumb it and convert the garage” on and on . . . . We finally deciding flipping wasn’t our best option.  She has done that many times in the past (before it was cool I might add) but with my level of work load and they boys sanity to consider, we decided to buy something a little more “done.”  And by pooling our resources we were able to do this more easily.  The figures just make sense.  Share a mortgage, share utilities, share the cost of yard maintenance, SHARE THE CRAZY lol and on and on.

academywide

{Yes it is a 1927 Tudor with painted brick, worth living with your mama for I say, even if does need some yard work still and a more fluffing but we thrive on that right? And can I just say i SO see a curved black awning with white trim over the front door!}

Of course there is a flip side.  An adjustment period I might.  My ego.  I will be honest, approaching 42 and “living with my mom” wasn’t my vision for life. But this isn’t the house I grew up in…we made the decision and share the financial burdens together. But still, two women learning to bend to one another and *gasp* give up a  little control of their castle is a journey you might say . . .  But we decided it was worth it.  We try to laugh a lot and apologize a lot when boundaries are crossed.  Oh yes it happens.  See my mom is a spitfire.  She is cute and small and always in a good mood but she IS BUSY and the safety police.  I am moody and more blunt and frankly this honey badger doesn’t care about a lot of her concerns (“Holly, there is crazy wire in the attic OMG what is it, there might be some cardboard under the house, that is hazard!!”).  Deep breaths.  But I really try to respect her and be loving to her.  Watching her go through breast cancer 5 years ago makes that a little easier for me these days. Although I may have said last Sunday,”OMG leave my sh*t alone” or something of that nature, I also know deep within my heart and mind that

WE ARE STRONGER TOGETHER.

So lots more coming on this social experiment.  And the house.  And meshing our stuff, and styles.  And how its messing up the boys.  I kid, I kid…they love it. They have their own rooms upstairs and a charming playroom and larger yard! Maybe Nana will even do a guest post.  Maybe she will even become a dog person eventually. Maybe I will become less controlling and moody and learn to let some little things not irritate me so much.  This may not be forever but it’s for now and it is good even though we are only about six weeks in . . . so I will keep you posted.

So pray for us, that this is a sweet chapter in our family’s story.

Midwest Living feature & gift certificates

This beautiful home that I blogged about  here and here was recently featured in the Christmas issue of Midwest Living..such a thrill for all of us! This was particularly special because this client has become such a good friend! And y’all that snow.  That is really special for a Texas girl that never sees snow..it’s magical! Plus the stylist on this project was the amazing BONNIE BROTEN who’s work I have adored for years..the only bad part was I didn’t get to go up for the shoot because of commitments at home ;( But regardless it turned out amazing and I am so proud of Allison and Bonnie and praise God for bringing me into this project and family! I mean just look . . .

midwestliving1

Look at my gorgeous friend.. her soul is even more beautiful!

midwestlivingallison

This kitchen..so good. But it takes work.  I arrived a few days before the open house and it was an army getting this room and others finished.  It was risky but y’all I rubbed “rub n buff” on these fixtures when they didn’t arrive quite the color we were hoping…they are NOT Visual Comfort..they are from Ballard or RH (can’t remember which) after some muscle time!  Allison did amazing choosing the reclaimed wood in this project and she designed the pantry..she is now doing design work in the Wisconsin area and forming a business called WHITE BARN DESIGN. I love the name because of her family history and their old farmhouse with the amazing white barn! I have encouraged her to do this because working with her on the project was so fun and she is so darn good..it was truly a collaboration with me in Texas and her up in WISCO land doing the hustle work!

midwestlivingallison2

Her gorgeous dog Barley below!

midwestlivingbedroom

And the  hollyhock pillows!  And ikea slipcovered chair by LS slipcovers that was originally in the entry but moved here so a tree could go there for holidays!  This bed she already had and painted herself a dark color…and of course the check wall and black windows!

Coffee station in the pantry!

midwestlivingcoffeebar

These panels were made in Texas (just like me) my wonderful seamstress Susie Bronikwoski made these up and we shipped them to Wisconsin!  The chairs are from IKEA and monogrammed in Houston…my southern touch to the project! The sideboard is an old piece that Allison has had for years!

midwestlivingdiing

In the living room we used simple Pottery Barn panels and of course my fave blinds from Select blinds.com  BAMBOO TORTOUISE BABY! The adorable chalkboard ornaments also shipped from Texas from beloved TRUE BLUE HOME!

photographer is Kim Corneilson, amazing styling by Bonnie Broten!  Follow Bonnie here..she is a legend!

Curious Details’ Art Shop

Oh y’all this is good. Really really good. Did you know my friend Becki at Curious Details has opened an art shop??  Three wonderful cow prints and more items coming soon… Check it out here.
Becki says “Part of the inspiration for the wood panels project is that I love original art and was inspired by my work travels to the nearby Texas countryside( which I dearly love!). The project combines my passions of design, photography and road trips.”
What I love is that all of the work is original, photographed and edited by Becki. AND Printed in the USA
becki-griffins-curious-details-3
I thought my fave was the one below with the moon…GOODNIGHT MOO…but now I am loving the one above too!  It’s a hard decision.
becki-griffins-curious-details-8
The moon is definitely magical….I guess I just love them all to be honest!
goodnight-moo-final-edit
She calls this one below modern moo..I can see it in a nursery..well anywhere.  They are so versatile!
modern-moo-final-edit
She chose the wood panels to print on as an alternative to canvas or paper because they have a warm, clean and organic feel. Because they’re printed on wood they feel like an important substantial piece when they’re hung. No additional framing is needed. Look at the easy peasy sturdy hanger on back!
And they fit in perfectly with the clean modern farmhouse style we all love ( and other styles as well!!)
about-wood-panel-collage
The finished product has a subtle painterly feel which given the piece interesting depth.
She is having a Christmas sale too and the code is HOLLYJOLLY2016
screen-shot-2016-12-05-at-4-28-42-pm
Like I said, more is coming.. I hear talk of a beautiful paint horse soon and some coastal subjects and trees.  We all need good art and many of you need large art for big spaces in your home..these come in various sizes and they have meaning and are made in Texas (Becki) and produced in USA….wouldn’t you rather invest in something like that for your walls over something from Pottery Barn etc… I know i sure would..i just need more walls!
Congratulations Becki on this new venture…it’s about time sister..we needed this option! SO GOOD!

Louisiana Home Tour!

screen-shot-2016-12-04-at-6-13-18-pm

I have been working on this beautiful home in Louisiana for nearly two years…since the beginning stages and plans!  So its such a delight to see it come to fruition and finally be a warm, cozy home for my client’s family!  I posted about the construction here.

lopezconstruction

And now it has boxwood and Christmas decorations and the sounds of children inside !

screen-shot-2016-12-04-at-6-13-06-pm

The homeowners were asked to participate in a local home tour that will be this Saturday evening, December 10th, in Thibodaux, Louisiana.  Details are here and  at the bottom of this post if you would like to attend and or donate to the cause of the tour.

Here are a few sneak peeks! (these are just phone pics so they do not give this home justice but they are better than nothing right) enjoy!

Homebuilder on this project was Chris Ledet Homes and the architect was Mike Bougeois. The fresh garlands and wreaths from Green Acres in Thibodaux, with magnolia woven in by yours truly;;  They were all so patient and as you can see, extremely talented!

screen-shot-2016-12-04-at-6-00-45-pm

Of course we decorated with lots of magnolia, simple satin ribbon (it is red not pink;) and oyster trees! I love that the house is new but has such a historic feel…so many Louisiana elements like brick floors, wood walls and floors, Audubon prints, elevated porches and gas lanterns! I had to add some of my faves too like the brass lights in kitchen and the art from Lindsay Letters for the season.

lopezchristmascollage1

The house is such a pretty setting too..the trees down there just make me gasp..such beauty.

The dining room is right inside the front door with study to right…classic central hall design.

screen-shot-2016-12-04-at-6-00-30-pm

This antique french dining table that I baby’d in storage for over a year came from Marburger Farm.  So fun to see it finally decorated with greens ready for entertaining!  The drapery fabric is Pierre Frey and the chairs were monogrammed and reupholstered via Gracie’s Custom Interiors in Houston! All of the drapes in the home were constructed by Ronda Crockett of Jouli Designs (you can reach her at 985-232-2519).

lopezdiningroom

The outdoor ribbon is actually a red herringbone..its reads a soft red/pink from a distance but you get close it is red herringbone..it is from True Blue Home..in fact many of the accessories in the home came from True Blue Home as well as new furnishings from Ethan Allen (the kid friendly sofas) and antiques from Leftovers Antiques in Brenham!

This particular light from Visual Comfort is discontinued so glad we got it for this house..along with gray cabinets, old rug and brass faucet.

lopezsink

Chairs below…Schumacher floral on front and stripe on back…and the secretary is an early Round Top find by the client!

lopezchairs16-12-04-at-5-59-40-pm

Upstairs is a nice great play space with natural light..that entire front shed window IS PLAYROOM!

lopezplayroom

Les Indiennes pillow from True Blue Home (i get all of my Les Indiennes and John Robshaw pillows there fyi) worked in with Christmas gifts and pillow!

lopezplayroomgifts

Notice the Lindsay Letters 12 days of Christmas cards on the garland, big blue dot pillow from True Blue Home

and street signs from Old Glory Antiques!  And the mudroom, back downstairs entrance is on the left with more Les Indiennes pillow From TBH and banner from my pop up shop…so cute!

lopezchristmascollage3

I love this entire extended family..the hospitality down there is amazing and I wish I could be at the tour but I hope some of you can attend.  I will be home with my own Bebes;; but I will be there in spirit!

lopezchristmas2

You will not be disappointed with the tour and especially the beautiful people!

Christmas faves

Sharing some of my fave photos of Christmas past today . . .

I think this might be my fave holiday image ever from my own “work” or home;

stockingsclose

And I loved this cozy Christmas nest in our “new old house”…this room will always be an important part of our history.

studytree

It’s so interesting how the same furniture and things can look so comforting and the same in different settings but also so different in different homes..the kids and I still sit around this scrubbed pine table every day!

diningroom kitchentablecloser

When it comes to Christmas I love red and I love wreaths, lots of wreaths….and lots of bowls of ornaments!

IMG_4686

Wide red ribbon for the win! The two pine pieces in this room were so awesome and I no longer have them…”shared them” with clients when we moved..so glad to know they are being enjoyed in their homes now…

tvroomxmaas

I miss this house and the promise I thought it held for our family but I don’t regret the beauty I was able to create here, it was all part of our story.

Clinging to the Advent season and its true meaning….clinging to the the words of C.S. Lewis as well!

It’s upon us y’all…December is here..let’s do this!

Fall Creative Class & Gratefulness

Well our last class of the year has come and gone and it was so much fun.  We tackled a huge topic… DECORATING + BUSINESS….wow that is broad topic there Ms Holly Mathis what were you thinking??  Well it was a broad topic, yes for sure but I hope we can do a follow-up class possible and keep our message boards hopping building a “community” (sorry I had to use that word) for these discussions, they are so important! And it was a great day with a lot of good information and connections….Just when I think classes might be too much to juggle with decorating the Holy Spirit really shows up (I feel a little dramatic saying that but its true I think) and I realize  “this is good this is really good…let’s keep doing this!”

fallthankfulpumpkins

I am just thankful people want to come and are so open to share…it has been an amazing experience to do this open studio and class experiment.

As usual we started in the studio with mimosas and introductions and our first teaching time! And beautiful place cards by Dionne from Nib & Pixel!

a-holly-mathis-table-768x908

We did not get a group photo this time (that is what happens with Natalie Dawley or Natalie Lacy Lange don’t make it;;; missed y’all) but I loved meeting Bethany from The House of Figs and she did a wonderful post on our day on her blog..thank you Bethany, you are a total doll!

a-holly-mathis-selfie-768x768

We had a large class, over 20 people and so diverse, love that, including a precious couple from Tennessee!

For lunch we headed to my home for a box lunch on the porch..the weather was perfect..so grateful for that miracle too!  Flowers by Maggie at Bramble in Bee and food by Royers Round Top Cafe..yummy!

fallcanflowers

I love these fun little cans that Maggie found for some of our workshop table..they are small enough it left room to work but a punch of color…and she loaned me all of her extra fall pumpkins so I finally got to play with having a pumpking explosion…she even  had a few with lettering from @calligraphycult …. so fun!

falltable2

Everyone got a notebook full of info and room to for more research and notes..our plan is to keep in touch and tackle and research more topics together over next few months!  Everyone also received a Miss Mustard Seed sample pack of paint, a Royers Cutie pie and Stoney Peak Candle!  All of my fave things right now!

fallnotebokk

More pumpkins, pumpkins, pumpkins!

fallpumpkin
Hunter helping with clean up later that day..he can pick up some pretty large pumpkins in his mouth!

huntercollage

I just had to get one more #fall #grateful #thanksgiving post in before Christmas cranks up…I am grateful for so much…my clients and the opportunity to do this work, my Saviour and Creator that makes it all possible and sees me on the good days and bad..the last couple of years have been such a roller coaster journey not all instagramable pictures of success for sure..but at the end of the day there is much to be grateful for… THANKS BE TO GOD!

Watch Instagram and the blog for info on more classes possibly in 2017…I know I am definitely at least doing one in late January 2017 in the Pacific Northwest and more in Texas possibly later in the spring…let me know what topics you are interested in such as . . .

**more creative business related topics, general decorating classes, new builds/choosing surfaces or something else??

I am praying for more balance and margin and present time with my kids in 2017…trying to find the sweet spot between classes, the studio and pop up shop and residential work.  The Pop Up will close after Christmas (open Saturdays in December) and only reopen for special shows possibly in the future or online, not totally certain.  Same with classes, may offer some online or quarterly?  Its all successful but only one Holly so I am praying for wisdom and ways to edit and balance to give the best to my kids, myself, my clients and the Lord and be the best version of Me that He made me to be..not an Instagram or curated version..just HIS VERSION..SO Jesus, THY WILL BE DONE!

And God bless YOU as you look toward ADVENT and new beginnings as well  and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Real Life House-Brenham Edition

reallifehomes44

Another installment of REAL HOMES coming to you from Brenham, Texas.  Brenham is the home of BLUE BELL ICE CREAM and is a charming little town….all of WASHINGTON COUNTY, TEXAS is beautiful and full of history and charm so this is an idea place for real house living.

front

frontporch

My friends Aubrey & Mitchell Davis recently remodeled this “real home” near Brenham, Texas, where all live!  Brenham is a great place to live and raise a family and they knew this fixer upper could be perfect for the right family.  Aubrey is a budding real estate agent and Mitchell is a contractor in the area!  Can you believe the befores of this property?  And when I say PROPERTY that really is the strength of this project (along with the people involved)!

frontunfinished

This house is located on a lovely rural road out from the town of Brenham with nice trees and a bit of land.  That made this venture make a little more sense but I have to admit, when I first walked in the BEFORE space I thought they might be a little nuts and definitely had a hard road ahead.

This collage shows more BEFORES, check that one in the MIDDLE! YIKES!

hummingbirdbefore

But Mitchell forged ahead with construction and Aubrey chose the finishes, and colors and THEY DID IT, they pulled this one off.  I am so impressed with the job y’all did on this guys!  Y’all are hardworking and have great style.

Now on to their best project yet…a NEW BABY..the Davis family is due ANY DAY! If you can flip a house, parenting will be a breeze…NOT!  The intensity can actually be very similar at times but I know y’all will be great parents and I can’t wait to see more homes and projects in your future!

  • GETTING STARTED: Education, Training and Business permits
  • TO BLOG OR NOT TO BLOG? Starting a website and how to navigate social media
