My friend Nancy Calvert at Pressing Events in Houston has recently expanded with more Mackenzie-Childs than ever and cookware coming this fall!!

Nancy’s wonderful shopkeepers Victor and Edward painted the walls recently from a dark khaki to SW Mindful Gray and it really changed the space!

They are also showing more Mackenzie-Childs stock than ever and it’s fun to see all together! I love the courtly checked mixed with the flower market plates below!

My fave piece in the store is the CC barn light I think! And they are still working with brides and other to do custom letterpress invitations and more. Did you know they actually have a letterpress on site and these guys know how to run it! I love supporting local businesses and now my readers do too so think about going in to Pressing Events and getting personal service with cards and invites rather than being overwhelmed in front of a computer screen on your own..Nancy and her guys are so great and give you so much attention!

Look at the cute CC (courtly check;) skirt they added behind the counter..its all Mackenzie all the time here!

They have the CC in the window now so you can see it from the street easily and the back wall has the CC STRIPE..did you know Mackenzie-Childs makes wallpaper? You can see and order it at Pressing Events!

Pressing Events is located in the Town and Country area City Centre..it’s always easy in and out which I love!

Creative Class Registration

It’s finally here my first class/workshop. . .

I gave a sneak peek on Instagram a while back and now registration is finally open here on the website under the classes tab at the top of the page! I am overwhelmed and humbled by the interest already! Excited!

Join me for my first Creative Class here in Brenham, Texas, in my studio on Saturday, May 14th from 10am -3 pm and again for a May encore on Monday May 23, 2016 from 10 am – 3 pm.

The Creative Class idea comes out of years of clients and friends encouraging me to teach a class or workshop on all things creative and home related. All the things we love to talk about! The first class will focus on my story of how I got into design and blogging and will walk through various general decorating topics including favorite paint colors, design sources, tips and tricks and defining your style and design philosophy. My goal is to give others the ability to create and hone their own spaces with joy and confidence.

Cost for the May class is $249

Fee includes lunch on the charming town square in Brenham, Texas. Brenham is a small town just an hour or so drive from Houston and Austin.
Class time will start at 10 am until 3ish
Guests will receive a goodie bag, takeaway sheets and yummy local desserts.
For an add on fee of $75 you can bring photos and questions of one room or “hot spot” in your home and schedule 30 minute one-on -one feedback time with me at the end of the day from 3-5 pm. These spots are limited.
Please note: help finding overnight lodging can be arranged upon request. The class is non-refundable but is transferable with notice.

Classes will be small, between 10-14 people only! {note; this has changed, I have made more room and we now have 20 people and may add a few more..we will not go over 25!)

My plan at this point is to resume classes in the fall but depending on interest we may do summer classes as well!

I have already been so overwhelmed and delighted at the interest… I can’t believe spots are going so fast!

Summer topics may include garden and home tours and local shopping days. Fall classes being planned include more in-depth topics including: counter materials, lighting, styling shelves and tables, mixing fabrics, favorite paint colors, designing bathrooms and kitchens on budgets and more. We will not offer the class online at this time but possibly in the future.

Weekend Update

Remember, Dennis Miller and Weekend Update..so funny! I am not near as funny but this important info y’all..three things

(1) Bluebonnet Festival in Chappell Hill is this weekend!!! So, True Blue Home is typically open Wed-Saturday but will be open this Sunday during the annual Bluebonnet Festival…The weather has been gorgeous so come on out and visit and shop! Cindy has some fun treats I can’t wait to see!

(2) Nana and I are in the May issue of Country Living!!! That is right, us and brother right there on page 46 and its the sweetest little feature I have ever been given..thank you Country Living!!! And to make it even sweeter, my good good friend Becki Griffin of Curious Details STYLED THE COVER..that is right, she styled the porch and horse and all..that is my Becki, she got a horse in the scene..so proud of you Boo!

(3) And last but not least, Creative Classes are coming soon! That’s right..I have never done and e-book or seminar but finally the first HMI “Creative Class” will opening registration next week!

I will explain more SOON about what Creative Classes with Holly Mathis Interiors really means and the MAY DATE..its an idea I have had cooking for years and I am finally pulling the trigger next month with my first decorating class in my Brenham studio! The response on Instagram was so good that I am thinking about having both a Saturday and week day class in May, and then will likely resume in fall with monthly topics. If you have interest we may even have some classes or get-togethers in summer we will see. So check back Monday to hear more about that.

True Blue Home + special hours

True Blue Home will be open special hours during Texas Antique Week, Monday-Saturdays 10-7 pm! Also commonly called, “Round Top,” this season lasts 2-3 WEEKS not just one week. You can read more general info about the show here and more about True Blue Home here and here.

Quick recap, True Blue Home opened last fall by owners Cindy & Brian Taylor and their family and I had the honor to help plan and curate the entire space with them—and the doors opened during the last Antique week!

So it has been less than a year but what a ride! So much beauty on this journey!

And True Blue Home is located in an amazing old building in the heart of historic Chappell Hill, Texas, which is truly “right off” hwy 290 as we say in Texas!..”Right off” means CLOSE! So if you are headed to Austin or Round Top from Houston this a “very close”. . . “don’t want to miss it” MUST SEE place to stop! The shop is full of things big and small, from birthday cards and candles to lighting and sofas! We have it all, even dishes!

There are also great plants and wildflowers, food and shopping in Chappell Hill, AND the True Blue Home COTTAGE!

Just a walking block away from True Blue Home, the “True Blue Cottage” is an 1854 historic structure filled with furniture and fabrics from our favorite vendors and craftsmen…all available for sale. It’s been so fun to be part of styling retail in an actual home space as well a storefront. You can read more about “The Cottage” here.

The Show Cottage will be open on Saturdays this Spring: March 26 and April 2 from noon to 5, and by special appointment.

Old Glory + Antique Week Texas!

Texas Antique Week is starting soon…some early birds will even be here this weekend! See my recent post here with more info and links to guides and dates. I have many “can’t miss” places to visit during Antique Week, also commonly called “Round Top”, including Leftovers, Royers Cafe, True Blue Home newly opened in Chappell Hill, and last but not least, OLD GLORY in Burton.

All of these places are actually in different towns but all within driving distance. Old Glory Antiques is located in Burton about 9 miles from Round Top and approximately halfway between the town of Brenhan and “Round Top” proper where most of the antique shows are held. Leftovers is in Brenham and True Blue is in Chappell Hill on the path from Houston.. The map at end of the post helps orient a bit and make a plan!

Stylist/photographer Becki Griffin recently snapped these sneak peeks at Old Glory….just have to share a few.

Love the indigo upholstery collection owner Holly Kuhn has developed! It’s nice to see her soft furnishings against her signature primitive pieces!

Love this shot of the sofa arm Becki..so good…and she captures the light in the store so well!

Did you know Old Glory Antiques in housed in a bona fide Texas dance hall?? Just the structure itself is so interesting not to mention all of the wonderful things inside!

I spy lots of farm tables and chippy pieces along with that cute plaid settee! And love these artists brushes and twine.

And I have to say the owner, Holly and Brian Kuhn of Old Glory and the amazing ladies that work with them are just the nicest people. I always enjoy visiting with them so much..just so. nice.

The talented Tara Royers Steele did the map above of the area during Antique Week..it gives you an idea of the lay of the land! Bottom line, you don’t want to miss Old Glory, it’s a sweet spot for sure!

Favorite Fixer Upper

Of course I love the episodes of HGTV’s Fixer Upper that feature my funny brother Jimmy Don BUT last night’s episode has to be one of my all time faves because it features the home of my precious friends Cameron and Jessie Bell. Jessie is actually the daughter of my son’s second grade teacher and over the years her parents have become wonderful friends to the boys and I! We adore the entire clan!

I adore this house because it has such a neat history and story. AND IT IS SO SMALL (around 700 sq feet!). I love the concept of small space living and this is it y’all. I think this may be the smallest house they have ever done on the show! This is an original “shotgun” house moved from the other side of the interstate in Waco, Texas, near Baylor University. So many of these old homes have been demolished over the years but Cameron and Jessie saw potential and this one has been saved! The entire roof had to be removed to transport the structure. These houses were called “shotgun” houses because they were long narrow structures usually no more than 12-15 feet wide..I believe this one is 15′? One room opens into another with no hallway which helps breezes in the warm climate. There were many many of these homes in the working class area of Waco that is now home to Baylor. And now this one has new life!

You can see Nana was a little nervous about Henry touching the crank down stairs. The unique stairs are on a pulley system make way for use of more space above without taking space below! And yes Nana and Drew and I were on this trip to but you see who jumped in all of the photos..yep HENRY! It’s like Vanna White meets “where’s Waldo” with the showing off of every feature in the house from the crank down stairs to the SMEG fridge! (which he is nearly as big in size!). He had fun! I love seeing my kiddos getting excited about houses and creativity! Thank you Cameron and Jessie for letting us visit!

OK so when they placed the house in its new location (just blocks from Magnolia’s Silos) they used amazing historic brick to set it higher off the ground than before and added modern touches. I love that the house has old style windows left natural and original pine floors and traditional touches like the Bevelo gas lanterns but also modern touches like the metal rails and crank down stairs inside.

Good job Chip and Joanna! Those white oak cabinet WOW!~

The finishes are so good! The counters are actually honed granite but they are so matte like I have never seen before and I really like the square tile trend! Love that Waco Civic Theatre sign!

And while I love the SMEG and windows, my fave I think has to be the bathroom and the concrete tile floor and concrete counter! It was just such a surprise that they tucked such an amazing bathroom into such a tiny house!

Even my oldest Drew age 11 was like “WOW THE SHOWER”…in fact he noticed how the house was old but “modern” and “different”..very interesting to hear his take on the house and restoration.

Excuse the phone cord below but the bedroom walls tied in with the floors, so pretty…I didn’t get good shots of the bedroom or upstairs loft but trust me it is really pretty! Love that floating shelf! And there are some salvaged pieces of wallpaper from the original structure that Joanna had framed and gifted to the Bells… these are hanging in this bedroom, love that sentiment. Wish I had snapped a photo, such a great idea!

Congratulations Jessie and Cameron on your amazing renovation and saving this piece of Waco history! And kudos to Chip and Joanna for another great reno in Wacotown!

And y’all keep a look out on Air BnB they may be sharing this property some weekends. As you can see Henry was quite smitten…we ALL enjoyed staying in this Fixer Upper so much!!

Sealy house update

The homeowners have finally moved into this amazing old home that I blogged about here . . . I am looking forward to sharing more complete images but for now a few sneak peeks starting with this downstairs powder room!

This powder is just right off the kitchen which has turned out so pretty!

This was our inspiration board for the kitchen . . . the Visual Comfort bakery lights and glass (not lucite) hardware are a nod to the Victorian Era . . .

The range oh the range! The homeowners own several bakeries in Houston so this range oven will get put to good use!

Plus its just pretty. . . along with polished marble counters and an entire wall of subway to add interest and utility in a tight space!

In the entry, the stairs got fresh needlepoint look animal carpet from Stark! Keeps the house from being too stuff or old for his young couple. Turned out so fun and classy!

In fact, floors in this home were one of the best part of the projects..original wood floors where possible and buffalo check “tile” in the laundry and hex in baths…lots of hex..very true to the age of the home.

Don’t be afraid to mix floors as long as colors are similar it adds to the charm of the house and is a nod the fact that laundry and kitchen areas in old home were often added on and “evolved”;

Love this shot of the back door. The homeowners added a new porch along back of the house that mirrors the original wraparound porch on front!

This tile is simply from Daltile but adds so much to the laundry room along with the Henry light.

This was the exterior mid way through remodel.

A few more snaps of homeowners Mike and Vanessa and the longggg process. I think they will agree it has been worth the wait and the construction company did an amazing job!

I can’t wait to show more. It has been such an honor to work on this home. The homeowners are great people and it has been a joy!

Planning for Round Top & Texas Antiques Week

Prep and planning are in full force for the big event! That’s right, it will soon be time for Texas Antiques Week or Round Top Antiques Week as it has been referred to for over 43 years.

We get pretty excited around here about antiques and junk and bluebonnets!! Just look at this face!

One of the number one questions I am asked is “When does Round Top start?” and/or “When is the best time to visit Round Top?” My answer and suggestions vary based on the situation. As a rule the fall show is the first weekend of October and the spring show is the first weekend of April (and the weeks before). What started as 3 days is now approximately THREE WEEKS. And always remember different/specific shows start on different days. These are my favorites and dates this year.

Also my friends Paige and Smoot Hull of The Vintage Round Top have put together a really good “Guide to Round Top” Be sure and check it out here.

They answer all of the questions from what to wear etc to hints about when should you go?? I always ask “are you going with children or girlfriends? “Are you going to shop or just browse and hang out? “Recreational visit or SERIOUS GET OUT OF MY WAY SHOPPING? And I am no expert these are just my humble suggestions, observations and recommendations. For instance Marburger is a beautiful show, if you are looking for something you will likely find it here but maybe not the best bargains. Bargains you will find early or late out in the dusty fields. Big Red Barn is the original show and fine antiques…really amazing pieces.

So there are a lot of variety and choices…but don’t get overwhelmed!

First off, come during the week if you want to do serious shopping. The crowds aren’t as bad, less traffic and I think it’s just easier. It is hard to say whether the beginning or end of show is better. Sure if you get here early you get first pickings BUT many dealers have series of stuff they bring out. So talk to dealers and others if you are looking for something specific. They may have something in storage they haven’t brought to tent yet or know of something.

Friday/Sat/Sun are busier but fun… Just be patient with traffic and strollers. I did a post here about shopping Round Top with kids. It can be really fun. But it takes patience and its just as a different type of shopping as you mamas understand.

My boys love Round Top … taking photos, seeing old Army stuff and treasures….but you can bet if my only chance to go was with out without them I would go without. Just being honest. Luckily we live close and I can do mommy and work days as well as family days usually….

And of course, don’t miss a chance to eat some Royers Pie and visit my fave PIE HAVEN owned and operated by my beautiful friend Tara. She is one of the most heartfelt and hard-working women in Round Top and there are many many! The town and shows are full of just great people!

Also be sure to explore nearby small downtowns like Brenham and Burton and Chappell Hill. Eat Blue Bell Ice Cream and of visit amazing stores like Leftovers Antiques (more about their annual party and store on the blog soon) which is on Hwy 290 between Round Top and Brenham and Old Glory Antiques in Burton (also off 290). And of course True Blue Home is on the way off Hwy 290 in Chappell Hill, Texas!.

SO whether eating, exploring tents or fields or stores its all wonderful and SO worth the trip! I will have more info and tips as the show nears! It’s coming like a freight train..save your pennies!

Let’s Talk about Marble Part Deux

OK so I have been working with a great “new to me” contractor..Daniel White of Superior Exterior in Houston..he does a lot of work in the outer Memorial/Energy corridor area of Houston and he knows the neighborhood homes backwards and forwards. I will be featuring a project we are working on soon for one of my fave (and very first) clients. For today’s post though I want to tell you about an interesting marble option that he is introduced me to…Dolamite..also wrongly called “Super white granite.” Its really marble according to Dan but it performs like quartzite. I believe him..this guy has his cell phone strapped to his forearm, he is serious about construction..he knows his stuff!

What do we think about this dolamite look?

And what is dolamite really??

It is categorized as a marble because of its properties.
And we know marble is a “non-foliated ( no layers) metamorphosed (change of mineral and chemical arrangement) limestone (is the pre existing rock)
This soft rock is changed by heat, pressure and introduction of chemically active fluids. A typical marble is calcite CaCo3. Dolomite is Camg(co3)2

The difference is magnesium which makes really hard marble. Hard marble is good for hard-working kitchens…making dolomite a good choice huh??!!

And look-wise its busy but it is pretty..basically its a pretty workhouse if that is what you are looking for!

I think it looks great with white cabinets. Dan and his guys build some great cabinets!

Dan is also the one to first tell me about porcelain counters…apparently that is going to be the next big thing..they can be gorgeous but install is tricky..its like installing glass apparently. When I was in New Orleans at stone yards they echoed “porcelain is coming..so popular” its swept florida headed west apparently! Dan told me to think of porcelain counters as huge porcelain tile. No grout lines. It is man made but very fragile to handle because of its size. And just like porcelain tile will not stain and you can use abrasive cleaners. I feared it was only available in shiny and apparently the most popular finish is shiny (polished). But it is also available in matte (honed). But it takes approx 6 week delivery time for matte in Houston area. Dan the man says that in theory any look or finish available in porcelain tile can be cast to slab size. But in reality they only cast what sells which is predominately marble look. Yes we love our marble look don’t we ladies!

So dolamite or porcelain are great options but there is not just one perfect option for every situation. Just yesterday I was in a client’s home that had used Danby marble and it was so good y’all. So. good. Just the cool touch and the edge..and it was 2 cm and not thick but still so so pretty. And satiny. She said it was from Arizona Marble and she said that they carry two levels…a higher end thicker more “streaky” dramatic Danby like “some” believe we have on the counter at TRUE BLUE HOME.

My client’s “lesser” Danby (she said the price wasn’t that bad) from Arizona. Arizona apparently carries two kinds. Interestingly enough, the Taylors (owners of True Blue Home) did not get their slab for our counter at Arizona but somewhere else and they were told its SOAPSTONE. Like the dealer said “it truly has properties of soapstone” but its white! Now the Taylors know their soapstone, they have had it in two homes and are informed about it and love it so they were intrigued because of course they have the dark kind (the only kind I knew existed). But the place they bought from insisted its white soapstone! However, several of my design friends and clients that have seen the mysterious TBH soapstone counter think its Danby MARBLE. Maybe the confusion happened somewhere along the way because Danby comes from New England and soapstone also comes from New England? Not sure. It is gorgeous so that is what matters I guess;

Do any of you have Danby marble? Porcelain counters?? Dolamite?? Tell us about the care? Is it honed or shiny? Would love to hear.

My favorite sofas

I am often asked “what is your favorite” sofa? “What is the best sofa?” And of course much of that depends on your budget and how you live…do you have kids, dogs? Do you want an investment piece or trendy, on and on. I find that more and more people are less willing to invest in good upholstered furniture. Sure there are still people that want Baker sofas but many of us LIVE LIVE in our homes more than ever and that kind of investment is just not feasible. Also the re-emergence of slipcovers in our country and boom, its a different market today somewhat than when my Grandmother was taking people to market for sofas in the 1980s. And yet we want comfort and quality. And to know where something is made and produced. Oh and maybe a little customization am I right??

When I began working with True Blue Home to put together a shop full of items with style and beauty I knew I wanted to include slipcovered furniture. The owner Cindy and I both love the look and ease of slipcovers. It was a no brainer. But we wrestled with questions like would we have recycled pieces slipcovered or go with this or that well known maker or another???? Or heck even “do we go to North Carolina and have our own sofas manufactured?” We discussed it all and looked at numbers and reviews. I also spoke to clients and others in the industry and finally we settled on two great sofa makers, Best Slipcover Company (BSC) and Moss Studio.

Both companies make their sofa in the USA and have amazing construction!

Moss frames are assembled using alder, a western hardwood, with 4×4 frame grade centers. The Moss spring system is constructed using 9 gauge, no sag, sinuous steel springs. The springs are clipped and stapled to the frame. The spring system is then hand tied with italian twine for strength, durability and stability. Depending on the sofa style, a layer of blended polyester may be added at this time. If the piece is to be slipcovered, the prepared frame will be covered with high-grade ivory muslin. Cushions are made from a high density, hypo-allergenic cloud nine 2-pound HR foam. This foam outperforms other foams by 10 – 15 times. The foam is then enveloped by a 10/90 white goose/down fill with a zipper enclosure. This construction allows for excellent shape retention with no “pancake” effect. The standard back cushion are 60% 90/10 (90% white goose feathers and 10% down) and 40% micro clusters which will maintain the shape of the cushion. The cushions will relax and provide the comfort and support Moss Studio is known for. Other variations of down and/or foam are available upon request with a possible upcharge. All styles can be ordered with a bench seat option.

Moss studio seams are overlocked for durability. And all cushions are offered with the standard welt. A contrasting welt is available at no upcharge if the fabric is available in house or supplied by customer. Other welt options include: knife-edge, flat flange, and top-stitched. Moss also offers several different skirt options. Standard options include: (1) kick pleat to the floor; (2) short kick pleat; (3) wrap skirt to floor; and (4) short wrap skirt. Other skirt options include: (1) dressmaker; (2) ruffle skirt to the floor; and (3) short ruffle skirt;

Love these Moss chairs above in the cottage kitchen! We have both sofas and chairs in both Moss and Best Slipcover Company and samples of other fabrics available from both companies as well! Don’t you love these Les Indiennes blue and white pillows on the flax BSC sofa?!

The sofa above is from the EXPRESS program offered by Best Slipcover Company, ships in TWO WEEKS..this is the pearl style..Another favorite of mine is their Rachel style sofa and it is offered in the express! with the box pleat skirt option! You can see the Rachel in the tiny cottage below . . .

These chairs below are from Moss in a taupe stripe…we also have similar chairs from BSC in a cobalt stripe! These don’t swivel. These are pieces from these companies we have in stock but special orders are possible of course! Swivel possible..even leather available!

By carrying two sofa lines at True Blue Home we able to offer different price points and styles, yummy Libeco stonewashed linen on the MOSS sofas at top of post and charming ruffles like on the white sofa below from Best Slipcover. Both Made in America, these lines have made it possible for us to show different looks in the main TBH store and in the cottage. I love this furniture!

Oh and full disclosure…my sofas are from IKEA…ha ha so if you are reading this thinking “I’ll never save enough for these sofas” just know I feel the same way in this season in life! BUT honestly the IKEA ektorps are still a fave too..I have three sets of slipcovers and muddy paws and boys don’t make me near as nervous as they would with MOSS or BSC. One day I will have one of these gorgeous sofas or chairs …and when the time is right, I know just where to get one!;
