    I keep thinking about putting my boys in the same room for sleep..just sleep..a simple room..one crib, one twin bed. Simple. Near mama. Toys elsewhere. There are so many factors to consider (age, sleep patterns, noise). But I keep thinking about this photo above (from Cookie,..i love this room)Not what I would do for boys exactly but it is so so sweet, it actually belongs to  this room belongs to none other than the talented John Derian’s son and daughter. Maybe I just like to daydream about how to rearrange my house and maximize function.

    I love this image with the books!  so clever!

    This photo of the boys in the toile room just cracks me up!

    Just because the wallpaper is toile doesn’t mean they can’t  be boys in here…the wood and brown tone in the paper just make it work.  Yep my husband would never go for this…although Henry does have trellis drapes right now…

    And I gasped when I saw this next image…it’s what I’ve had in mind for a big boy room since I first found out I was having a boy over six years ago..I wasn’t surprised to find out the mama lives in Fredericksburg, Texas!  This look is too cluttered for my little men right now but one day..ONE DAY!

    In the meantime, I will probably stick to something like this feel below… from Charleston, SC, simple and fresh…

    But the decor is the easy and fun part..it’s the function that gives me pause..WHAT WILL WORK FOR US. Because if I have learned anything, SLEEP matters more than even fabric.  IT. MUST. WORK.

    So what do you think?? Did you share a room growing up? Do your children share a bedroom? What has been your experience..would love to hear!

    This upstairs space in my  home is constantly in transition it seems… Do most of you find your “guest room” changes like that??  A place for storage and cast offs???!

    One side of this room (not pictured..ha!) is filled with totes and piles from the Mini Flea and Henry’s party..things yet to be sorted and put away.  I fluffed one side of the room just to make myself feel better.

    I even spent time placing things on the bedside table, including this photo of my mom (who has a birthday tomorrow…Can’t wait to see her and treat her to a CUPCAKE;;!) instead of putting away the junk in the totes!

    So this room is constantly in transition, not ever totally finished or “spot on” but it is sort of a labratory too..I do things in here i would not do in other rooms..like just rip up some burlap and clip onto a rod for quick curtains to cover an  AC unit;;  or slap some empty frames on the wall and not worry if they are crooked.  This would bother my husband if downstairs but upstairs it seems fun and I can enjoy when I go up there once a week..not something i necessarily want in my everyday spaces.

    How about that crazy long and skinny lumbar?? Now that was an experiment..or the naked lampshade?! Only upstairs! And my beautiful suzani my friend brought back from Uzbekistan is certainly not a cast off but it  is safe up here on this bed, for now at least…soon this space will be a playroom and covered in Legos and Thomas paraphernalia.

    Can’t believe I am finally going to let Drew take up residence upstairs…or at least some of his toys and playtime to start with…seeing this picture might help you understand my reservations over this transition…the stairs are steep and narrow…not something you really want a child venturing down in the middle of the night.  But change is coming so I thought I would share one last shot of this upstairs space, imperfect as it may be!..stay tuned for the playroom/big boy room transformation!

    Do y’all know about Marcia Brady dressers???? {That is my original term, my contribution to design..ha!} These reproduction french provincial (and I use that term loosely) dressers are abundant at yard sales and junk shops. They vary in quality, REALLY vary, believe me. You know the look, little girl bedroom circa 1970-1980, typically a white/ivory color dresser with gold specks and accents.

    {great example, Drexel from eBay, mine is not this nice!}

    A lovely french knock-off look. Sometimes sold with a canopy bed and matching bedside tables. My very own Marcia Brady dresser is the perfect size..long and skinny, lots of drawers, and I proudly painted it black about ten years ago. Wow that was a long time ago but those were my PAINTED BLACK years and its been in this bedroom since we moved into this house.

    In fact, my husband likes to rib me about being quoted in a publication (maybe two) for saying “black adds an instant touch of elegance to a room” or something of that absurdity. Well the thing is, I am sort of over the painted black. Can’t believe I just said that. Don’t get me wrong, I love Camille’s cabinets and new kitchen sideboard and many of my clients have black cabinets and I. LOVE. But I no longer instantly salivate and think “paint it black” when I see a ratty piece of furniture. So I did it, my Marcia Brady dresser (which cost all of $50 secondhand) is no longer black..it’s blue. Not country blue I keep telling myself but frenchy, swedish, “robins egg” blue.  It’s much darker and vibrant in real life..it looks very icy in these photos.

    After several test quarts from Sherwin-Williams and even Martha’s new paint line at Home Depot, I landed on “blue ivy” at Wal-Mart..oh how I hate saying “WM” on my blog but its true.

    {My little “Jackson Pollack” helping me paint the back!}

    After a lot of work and false starts, I finally like the color. Even more so after rubbing shoe polish on it. My brilliant friend recommended this and I thought she was nuts, I’ve heard of using sandpaper, raw umber, furniture wax..but SHOE POLISH? She is the type that can cut and color her own hair and look like a million bucks. I’m not, but I tried it and it worked. Notice the section on the right which has been “waxed” in contrast to the brighter area on the left that I still need to age.  I also need to sand more on the hardware, paint that gold lamp and more styling overall but overall, I do like the dresser much more now that it is blue.

    I may paint the rest of the black pieces in my bedroom, a large armoire and bookcase..thinking gray. But some things will always look good black, because you know it really makes a room look so elegant! ha!

    How about you? Do you have a Marcia Brady dresser?? What color did you paint yours?? How are you using your dresser?? They make great sideboards! Leave a link in the comments..we would all love to hear!

    Well after much debate (which I appreciate..thanks for the input), I ordered the Riley headboard from here. People it is large, but I like it. And Henry likes it. Pictured below before I even put the linen slip on…

    I did not order the Ballard nailhead headboard because I was afraid it would be too small but if you have a king bed, live in a smaller home that doesn’t have a huge bedroom, or tall ceilings, you might consider the Ballard version. Just sharing some knowledge;; The Riley is very comfy to lean against while blogging  I must say and I love the linen slipcover and nice tall shape.  And it does go to the floor which I like. More on the bedroom changes coming soon. Love the clean slate.

    I hope you have a great week. I have a wonderful new book to share with you this week and PROGRESS over at the Pioneer Woman!

    As I ponder my master bedroom redo, I’ve been shopping around for upholstered headboards.  In fact, this is the one I’ve have had in mind for the longest…

    sigh.  Isn’t is lovely? from Williams-Sonoma Home.  not cheap.  Sure, I could put forth some effort and have a workroom construct it and make it happen for a better price but at this point in my life, I am all about ease and budget so I am thinking between this…

    the Riley headboard from Pottey Barn, original I know ha ha, but you can’t beat the price, even with a workroom or designer discounts..and it comes straight to my door.  I would do it in the natural linen. I love the slipcover idea so I can wash BUT I also love the nailhead option below, similar price point, from Ballard Designs.

    The Camden, untufted I think, love the nailhead.  But I have two little boys and this isn’t a slipcover..you just can’t get the nailhead and slipcover wrapped up in one, gotta choose. oh well. Here is the Camden in tufted, they even offer tufted AND nailhead but that seems too much!

    I keep hearing that JCPenney and Target have great upholstered headboard options but I haven’t found them…the fabrics seem limited to micro suede or similar and the headboard doesn’t go to the floor, stops at the top of the mattress, know what I mean??? Maybe I am just not finding them??

    What about you, do you like upholstered headboards???  Nailhead trim?  Tufted?
