Flower power

This post is not about wallpaper or fabric, though I love flowers in both places. Nope, this is my attempt at a fashion post, or at least an ACCESSORY post.
Usually I read Melanie, Erin, Seleta, or Lisa for fashion tips and inspiration… I am sure there are MANY more fashion/clothing blogs out there, these aren’t primarily fashion blogs, but they are on my radar for whatever reason and always inspire in big or small ways..
OK so I started thinking about this because we had a little event at my son’s school last night. I knew I wanted to wear a plain black BR dress already inmy closet…very plain, sleeveless but not too short, no cleavage to wrestle with all night, something comfortable but classic. I also knew basic black meant I had accessory options. Have y’all seen ALL of the pearl and ribbon options out there now..i love those mounds of pearls! But for today I will focus on the FLOWER! (this is dedicated to you Missy, great job on the flowers for the fundraiser last night!)
Option #1 The Kentucky Derby necklace from Anthropologie (only $10..I think was on sale..otherwise why would anything in Anthropologie be under $10 unless its a coffee mug or drawer know right?!) oh and I gave it the name because I sort of feel like a winning horse at the derby when I put it on my neck, in other words, an idiot..but it IS cute and it has cute rhinestoney, vintagey buttons in the center of the flowers, and it is grey my new fave color and its from Anthropologie, you get the drift..but my husband stifled a laugh when he saw it so probably not a good choice. Maybe with a plain black tee and jeans or maybe I will cut it up and make cute shoe clips like these I saw on etsy.
Option #2
Pearl and flower necklace from Target.
I really like this necklace in theory but with the black dress it was just too predictable and granny..I think it would look much more fun with a denim jacket and tee. But that’s just me. Thoughts??? it is cute!

plain Anthro “looking” flower from a cheap-o mall store.
How did I decide?? Well obviously I took my options out on my back porch or the “dining room” as I like to call it and I just tried everything on my mannequin friend? A little crazy I know but it works. And yes I know I need to get Mrs. Mannequin indoors. It is a goal to get her in my room as an accessory catcher or up in my office as a ribbon catcher.
Back to the outfit. This is what I decided. The good ol standby chunky pearls, flower and shawl. Safe and comfy.
{please note: my mannequin has a smaller waist than I do..no fair, she looks better in things…oh well}

My idea book

This blog is my idea book. I have tried tearing out pages and organizing in folders. Just a mess and I have found when I tear out pages they get lost. So then I went to the “keep all good magazines and keep them intact” route which really stacks up, literally. How do you keep track of ideas that inspire from magazines and blogs?
I still love the idea of fab resource books. Even this amazing woman (pictured below in all her fab-ness) has them, she mentioned here, on the Skirted Roundtable..I imagine they are filled with elaborate drawings and beautifully scripted notes, not just tattered magazine pages and sketches on old birthday napkins! Maybe one day I will have the time to work on really great resource books!
Until then my version is much less sophisticated but very functional. It is my blog. If I post an image here of something fab, like this house I do NOT want to forget, then I have it here where I can find it..no more digging through my piles. Soooooo to those who might feel critical when you visit my blog or others and you think “all they post is photos of others’ work and never their own ideas” well maybe that is because the function of a blog for many is a place to not only diary your life and work but also a place to highlight ideas and things that inspire. Just a way of keeping track and we share with you in case you might be interested too… It is a great resource for readers and clients to be able to go to a “living with kids” or “paints” category and see several posts and images from myself as well as ideas from around the blogosphere.
Like these frames from Classically Amber..I could post and repost images of frames I have hung empty in my home and others but I would much rather show this..fresh and new to me..something I just discovered ,via a friend! I love how tight this arrangement is hung on the wall!
So now it is your turn, how do you keep track of your ideas and clippings, whether in real life on online???

oh my! handmade goodness

This new blog was just launched and y’all definitely want to check it out..I will be contributing occasionally..it is all about handmade items available online for moms, children and their environments…and I will be discussing how to incorporate some of the wonderful things out there into children’s rooms and other areas of the home.

Big Mama’s drape update

Well she did it, and I am so proud. Big Mama made her drapes (it was hard for me not to say curtains right then..why is that?? maybe the phrase “big mama and curtains” just go together, no offense Melanie!) Anyway…she sort of made them..she mistreated them and y’all, they look great! See for yourself.
I love that little stool. Great poufing Big Mama… and yes this was NO SEW project and dont forget, the Robert Allen fabric was only $1.99 from Fabric.com. I think she did the entire room for some insane amount like $28!.. here is a closeup.

Oh, be sure and look…can you identify her husband’s “special object” on the mantle?? It adds that special “Texas Hill Country” touch to the room.

Favorite paint colors: part 4

Many of us know the Nester and her freeing theory of decorating,”it doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful”..say it often-it is good advice. We all struggle with contentment and God is using the Nester to remind women that perfection and accumulating aren’t the requirement for home + beauty. Thanks Nester (and I keep calling her Nester because I frankly don’t know her real name but she is an actual person I just know it, because we are ‘internet friends’ ha!) All of this to say, I am thrilled the Nester is sharing with us today…read here for more on her favorite colors.
Ok so the Nester LOVES Duron’s Tobacco Road (pictured above in her former dining room..dont you love the kid on the table?!)…in fact there has been MUCH written about this color and how to have it mixed and where, etc…check it ALL out here.
She also adores Svelte Sage (SW) ..pictured below…and Oyster Bay (SW).
AND, here is another great post I found via the Nester’s blog with lots of links to favorite colors..hgtv also has a color forum. So if you aren’t overwhelmed yet, just go there! You will be.
Oh and someone asked about paint FINISH-I think most agree on eggshell or satin for the walls and semi-gloss for trim and cabinets…thoughts???

Harper’s big boy room

Poor little baby Henry has an ear infection so Grace from the blog Name is Grace is going to be our guest blogger today and tell us all about her little boy Harper’s DARLING room. I love the way it has a few nautical touches but it is not too “themey” and the shelves. LOVE. Thanks Grace! Yall enjoy. Hi everyone! Grace here, doing my first guest post ever. I am thrilled to be here:) Thank you Holly so much for the fun opportunity!
Today I’ll be sharing with y’all how I came up with the design for my son’s big boy room. I am happy to say that this room was done on a shoe string budget. I knew I wanted to keep the room classic, coastal, and fun. The main focal point of the room is obviously the wall ledges. We did this to save space, and knew that the front covers of the books would be so much fun to display. The rest of the room was what I call “decorate as you go, and hope it looks good.”
Here is the breakdown….
The Vintage maps I found on Etsy for I believe $10.00. The Virginia map is over 100 years old. Total score.
The check fabric on Harper’s headboard was also from a vendor on Etsy. I simply stapled it, along with some batting over his existing headboard. Easy peasy, took 30 minutes. The bedding is all stuff we had in our linen closet.
The blue bench is from Wisteria and was on sale for $85. The ledges are from Ikea, and were $15 each. My husband cut them down to size for a more built in look. Again, this project took less than an hour. (side note: hubby is a genius in math, measuring, hanging, etc and can do it in his sleep). The art you see on the very top ledges were made by yours truly. The bamboo shade is from Overstock and was $40.
The white dresser was a Craigslist find for $60. It was already painted white, and had the same knobs, so I just left it as is. The lamp base was a gift from Pottery Barn Kids. The monogrammed shade I purchased from the Pink Giraffe for $29, which includes the monogram price.The oar was a baby shower gift along with the adirondack chair, so zero buckaroos for those ticket items.
The wood frames with mats were $3.00 each at the thrift store. And yes, the mats were included in that price. The surfboard hooks are from the Pottery Barn Outlet from years ago. I think they were $7 each.

Blogger bathroom redo

Just like her kitchen, Grace’s bathroom redo does not dissapoint… In fact, it is amazing considering they did it in TWO weeks. The glass tile is gorgeous!
and the styling is right on too…what i love…the stool, the monogrammed lampshades…just perfection in my book. Read more here.
And really, yall should follow Grace’s blog..she is so sweet and she has such great ideas..she is the perfect combo of Southern belle meets California girl..oh and I just noticed she has links in her sidebar to her Virginia home where they lived before making the recent California move and links to little boy Harper’s room. I can’t wait to look at those pictures!

Big Mama’s fabric

Oh where to start. First off, Big Mama is a blog, most of you know that. The second blog I ever read in fact (the first being Boomama, which is probably why I called my first blog, Shabby Mama). All of this to say I think Big Mama and Boomama helped keep Shabby Mama off of the anti-depressants after Baby #1. Seriously, I was working one day in a nice office with big windows and art and then BOOM I was home with a colicky baby. There was just a little transition. Reading their blogs daily really ministered to me. Don’t laugh, I am serious. They made me laugh and keep a healthy perspective on motherhood.
All of this to say it is a great honor (again I am not kidding. dead. serious.) to help with Big Mama and P’s living room. Mounted deer heads and all.
In fact, we’ve already chosen fabrics. The Robert Allen fabric was a steal!
Only $1.95 from fabric.com, yep you heard me correctly! We were so excited. When we originally saw the fabric it was $6.99 which is a good price but when Melanie went back (and y’all know that is her real name right?!) it was even cheaper. The bosporous toile which I have used and mentioned before can be found online at House Fabric. Melanie found it at Hobby Lobby and it was a bargain too with their coupon. It will be big pillows for her sofa and antique church pew. And yall, Big Mama has a sewing machine. So this may get interesting.

Bye bye Blogger

and hello WORDPRESS and new blog! So excited about the changes and new look coming soon. The address you visit and bookmarks etc will NOT change but this will be my last post this week…please be patient and visit back on MONDAY to see the new look.
