I have been in love with monograms for most of my life.  I remember being so excited when i stumbled upon the perfect table linen (with my new monogram) in a Galveston antique shop for my wedding reception!  Monograms are just special.  Even in their new and sometimes “overdone” popularity, I still love a gorgeous monogram. So you can imagine my excitement when this arrived from my new sponsor, SOUTHERN PROPER MONOGRAMS.

It is made of wood and come in the naked/bare wood state so you paint it any color..and it was super easy to spray paint.  I didn’t know if i was going to be able to make it through the Holidays without my red door but this is going to help!  The white looks so pretty with the gray door (SW Urbane Bronze is the color btw)…I tried it with green ribbon, red and green and a few greens…a bit smaller size monogram would look great layered over a fresh wreath but this one is so huge and dramatic it doesn’t need much!  in fact, i may hang it later with no ribbon if i can affix a little hanger on the back….should be easy….Souther Proper monograms also has different fonts and smaller sizes for ornaments, stockings or gift tags!  The possibilities are endless!

Notice I did what i call a duogram (and yes i took the house numbers off my door, it was just too much with the post box and the idea of holiday decorations but i reserve the right to put another up later)…truly proper would be my husbands initials i guess, since he is the man of the house and all but since we are all modern couple i did “duo”..I put my initial first, not because I have subordination issues (no comments) but because its etiquette to put the woman’s name first, and not separate a man’s first name from his last name?? Y’all correct me if i am wrong, just my understanding..and frankly in today’s world, there are bigger tragedies than getting this right or wrong so I do it however you wish though I am sure the nice ladies at Southern Proper can help you decide..you could also just do a single intial.

Another item i just ran across that I am very excited to share are these amazing nutcrackers..unfinished and very inexpensive from….HOBBY LOBBY!  I have a love hate thing with Hobby Lobby and i wasn’t thrilled with their colors, price and selection of shatter proof ornaments when i was in there on Friday!  BUT they redeemed themselves when i rounded the corner of the craft Christmas aisle (near the decorations) and found shelves of unpainted items including the nutcrackers, big ones, little ones….with a son who is interested in soldiers, i knew this was Christmas gold..I think my mother thought i was nuts i bought so many.  I could paint them solid white or red like West Elm but I think i will leave them natural.

I am sure the boys will want to decorate a few…and at that price ($1-3 on sale!) I can allow them craft and play and use some for decor too!

And just a few more faves I want to mention because it takes time to plan and order…first, the tree idea for teacher and other gifts..I love this.

You can either order them from Seeds of Life and add tag like i did 2 years ago (paper tag with GROW stamped on it and then i handwrote inside) or buy your own tree or even just a plant and package this way..i never get tired of this idea.

And on the note of packaging, I have a wrap and ribbon report. Maybe it is just me, y’all may have found something cute or new or different but I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary at WalMart, World Market, Target or Hobby Lobby….last year i loved one from Target (looked like an Orla Keily print on kraft) BUT I am still loving the kraft paper from and bakers twine (and kraft tape) from Olive Manna, just fyi, the kraft paper is thin but not too thin..i don’t like the classic THICK kraft paper..just me.

I am also loving this wrap from Sundance and the french script wrap from Ballard.  Sundance also has some great ribbon for you ribbon-aholics!

Sorry for the long post and i apologize for posting on so much Christmas before Thanksgiving, I am really not a fan of that but I also wanted to give some heads up so you have ordering time etc..last year i waited until Mid December to blog about Christmas!

Have a blessed week and give Thanks to the Lord for He is good and His love endureth forever!

I posted this last year under the exact same title…it remains, my favorite!

    from Southern Living 2009 I believe….

    love the stockings and cushions….

and this cutie in his pjs!

. . .no fancy ornaments, just lots of colorful ribbon and simple touches.

this is my inspiration for our tree this year…since Henry is in the terrible 2 s big time right now (he literally broke a shutter off the hinges a couple of weeks back), I am not even getting out much of our Christmas….my plan is to buy a TON of cheap “non shatter” balls in bright colors..he will love it and it will be safe and save tears if a sentimental glass ornament gets broken.  this was him last year, i thought he was destructive then, he was just pensively interested.

Boy things have changed in a year! These book page ornaments arent totally henry proof but i want to make more..very easy and I don’t say that lightly, see here. My friend from The Brown Shed taught me how to make these..i am sure she will have some great stuff on her blog this season so keep checking her blog.

    What do you have planned different or special for decorations this year??  I know i know, Thanksgiving first!;

Praise God from whom all blessings flow…we are blessed and give thanks to God.

Because of Christ we have full and wonderful lives with jobs we love and children that give us joy.

Life is not perfect ( like my card (thanks to my wonderful friend Allison) in fact we have sick kids on Christmas eve and have had to cancel more than one plan but it is sweet and good because of Emmanuel..God with us. He is the source of everything good and perfect. And he is among us. Always.

Merry Christmas and God bless YOU in 2011 with health, happiness, grace and faith.

Part II…I still haven’t taken good photos of the dining room and kitchen changes but the drapes are finally up..here is a peek… I love the colorful fabric  (Waggamann by Braemore) so much more than I initially expected.

I did shorter drapes on one end of the room and full length on the french doors.

In the meantime there is lots of wrapping going on as I am sure you are doing too! scraps of burlap work great for big toys.

Y’all know i love plain kraft paper but i also found this kraft below with a colorful vine design (at target!) and it reminds me of the famous orla keily print..love it..wish i could have scored more than one roll…and of course one more book page creation.  This one is for Henry..he will have a blast tearing into it.

Something else I dont want to forget from this year, placecards Drew made for a family dinner.  Simple but sweet.

and finally our tree, i never finished adding the wood in the firebox or the fourth stocking (it might come tomorrow) but Henry has already started undecorating the tree so there is not much point;;..on to grocery lists now right?!

Last but not least, these toile drapes probably need to be replaced but I sure do enjoy them at Christmas, along with that huge botantical in the back, i have had it for years but never really used it..enjoying it this year…

But nothing is more exhausting or more fun than this little elf…wheww! Into. Everything.  But so cute we can hardly stand it.

    Merry Merry!

IF you live local, my friend Christi has a booth at local Hermann’s Furniture Store located in downtown Brenham, Texas, her booth is near the back of the antique mall section of the large store…Christi is the friend that I have been making the book page items with..she has great taste and once had a store in Del Rio, she is literally a treasure trove..i mention an item, like the skates on my front door wreath or my new/old doctor stool and voila she has them in her shed or booth..so you dont want to miss shopping her wares.  She made these flowers for her booth and they are only $12..get to Brenham as fast as you can!

Some of the flowers are felt and some are made from old men’s ties..so clever and colorful..i love the display!

And if you have never even heard of Brenham, Texas, and don’t live in the area..jump over to Jones Design Company for this EASY tutorial.  I finally made one with Christi’s urging and it really is easy..and you can get great looking grey felt at the HL..super easy..i wish i had made these for teacher and teen gifts..still might make a few for fun!

And if you don’t want to go out and buy felt you can do this with regular fabric too…a small scale print or plain flax linen would work great..have fun!

As promised, here it is, the simple instructions for the book page flower….fragile but so cute!

First step you simply draw out a spiral with a tail on one end.

then start rolling at the outside end of your spiral (opposite the end  i am holding with my thumb on the left)

once you release the rolled up strip it will loosen into this and voila!

Attach to your package with dabs of hot glue..it will be fragile, I havent put my gifts with these flowers under the tree because of Henry but they are fun to put on a special package you are going to hand deliver.

Thanks to my friend Christi for figuring out this little projects and for sharing with me…and yes I am begging her to start a blog and soon! She is good!

    {Some of you asked…the baker’s twine is from Anthropologie, several sources online have it and Paper Source as well but the Anthro has a huge spool for $16 and it is larger than most..i love it..as you can see i am putting it around everything!}

One last note, “real books” were not harmed in the making of this project.  I only use books i really am not a fan of like Happiest baby on the block  ha! or books that are damaged and I am upcycling…I would never tear into any treasured or “quality” books.  I love books too which is why i love this project!

    Enjoy!

A friend and I made some book page goodies this week and it was so much fun (we realize the ideas arent original to us but this is our version)..just little fun extras to attach to packages or use for ornaments or gifts.  I have to confess to y’all, I am not very crafty, in fact i purchased this book page wreath off of etsy from this seller

that’s right, i wanted a large one and didnt even make my own, so that sort of tells you i am no crafting superwoman but these projects below are EASY i promise…perfect if you feel a little creative but dont have a lot of time or skill like me!  Enjoy!

    STEPS FOR THE ACCORDIAN ORNAMENT:

fold a medium size book page in an accordian style, back and forth

down to a strip, then fold in half

    glue outer edges together

     then fan out

glue two or three pages together

you will have to glue between folds and squish together a bit for it to hold and top with a round glittery monogram tag made from your printer or purchased or gift tag like i had on hand for gifts…or you can use a little piece of the book page to cover center.

I love this accordian ornament for gift packages . . . you could even get fancy and do star tree topper…

the possibilities are endless..i kept it very simple, because i must warn you, these creations are not toddler proof!

check back later in the weekend and i will share the easy way to make these little bookish flowers…

and remember, you dont have to do everything, i havent baked a thing but it was fun to spend a few minutes today doing something i wanted to do, something joyful..Just do what you have to do, want to do and what the Lord would have you do…

image download available here . . . we should all print it off asap!

How do you display your Christmas cards?  I have one friend that puts them in a glass bowl on the table all year (correct me if I am wrong Joy;;) and they take turns with each card praying for that family throughout the year.

I enjoy them so much, I think my friends and family have some of the most gorgeous children..i love seeing how they have grown and changed. And i love the ones without photos too (jana bethel you style maven)!

This year I am displaying my treasures inside one of my beloved empty frames..just tacked wire and ribbon along the back to make rows..the middle “row” is the original hanger.  I love it..Pottery barn has a similar version but i like my vintage one much better.and its cheaper! (But i do loveee that monogrammed duvet!).
