    It’s hard to believe we now have a first grader on our hands!

    And the official portrait.

    Notice the little pudgy hands clutching the Bible, they really know how to get a mama don’t they?!

    I am so thankful Drew has made this milestone…his love for school today is a far cry from the first day of pre-K when Henry was a newborn and he was crying not to be left.  His school has been wonderful and we are so thankful. There is so much I could say about school choices and this child but the bottom line is GOD IS GOOD and we are thankful.

    MAMA

    Posted in: family

    Happy Mother’s Day to my beautiful mama!

    You can’t see it but I am extremely pregnant with Henry in this photo!  I am so thankful to be a mother and for my mama too!  And for all of the mamas in my life that love on me and teach me!

    Today is a tough day for a lot of women who long to be mother, church will be difficult, some will stay home and weep.  I remember those days.  Anyway, God bless women with a mother’s heart whether they have children or not. The Lord created us to nuture and its a beautiful thing.

    My baby is growing so fast..he is hardly a baby..so rough and tumble.  I can’t believe he will be 21 months next week!

    Here are just a few pictures to show you, ha!..we did a little photo shoot in the backyard yesterday..this is not his usual attire..i was going through big brother’s easter/sunday clothes to see what fits..uhhh not much as you can tell if you notice the legs on his jon-jon. I have a picture of Drew in this linen sailor suit at the same age.. sigh, my cup runneth over!

    I will be honest, motherhood is a challenge for me.  I love my boys and my family but two boys is a lot of chaos for me..We have a lot going on as you do! And I fight selfishness and exhaustion and lack of patience, often.

    But they are so special. It’s pretty amazing to watch them grow and develop. And we are changing too. God is refining our family and making us more dependent on Him.

    Download these wonderful little cards here as a reminder.  Thanks Emily for sharing these!

    And remember its not all linen suits and smocking everyday, anywhere…but there is joy in the little moments..so thankful i have been catching those more lately.

    We didn’t have a very exciting spring break at our house.  But Mr Andrew was quite a sport about it.  I guess when you are six you don’t have huge expectations.  I had a sinus infection and we just stayed home a lot.  But we did go to the Lego store and you know what?  He was totally satisified.  Best spring break ever in his book.  I was sort of dreading the trip the mall with my 6 year old.  Sad to say but true.  But it wasn’t that crowded the day we went and he was such a gentleman, he “let” me go in some “beauty shops”  (that is what he calls all “mama stores”) and was very enthusiastic about it all. We rode the escalators a few times and he was satisified!  Who needs Disneyworld..just a few hours at the Galleria!

    Let’s face it, no matter how many posts are written about hanging a photo or gallery wall, it can be quite a project! Whether you use templates or make a zillion holes…it’s just plain hard.  I have had them become a hot mess quick..but i’ve also  had them go up easy and wonderful.  When you do your own, you have to add emotions into the mix..like should you really hang a certain person by someone they did not get along with..it’s like seating at a dinner party.  Birthdays make me reflective and emotional so when i was working on this Sunday i could not help feel a mixture of sadness and joy. I finished it yesterday on my birthday which i thought was fitting since the wall really reflects my life (and of course that of our family too but you know what i mean!)

    First I laid it out on the kitchen floor.  To get the right mix, i had to switch things around a bit, even switch out a few photos to get the right scale and pleasing depth etc.. And even after that planning it went up a bit different when i started nailing.

    There is something wonderful about hanging photos of your children by photos of your grandparents that have passed. I so wish my grandfather could  have met my boys!

    I even hung a wonderful photo of my parents when they very young, before they got unhappy and divorced. I could have never displayed this photo ten years ago when i first did this wall.  But time heals and this photo is a part of my history so I framed it!  Hopefully my mom won’t make me take it down!   But our photo walls really reflect our lives, painful and honest, which just adds to the feat of the project!  But it is worth it..feels good to have it updated with my little family and not just ancestors and have it reallly reflect where we are as a family and God’s faithfulness and blessings!

    At the last minute, I added in Drew’s silhouette from Kindergarten he just brought home…Not fine paper art but I love it and I wrote the year and grade beneat it in pencil..It adds a large graphic spot for the eye to rest.

    I used a mix of silver, gold, and wood tone with a assortment of vintage and new frames. I used a few wood  frames from Pottery Barn with white mats, some don’t have mats and the linen matted silver frames are from West Elm (thanks LLH for telling me about those!) I love the vintage frame on the bottom of the image below! Most of the gold frames are old except a couple small ones from a local frame shop and the little round PB frame (not on their website but currently in the stores)..i needed something small and round i felt to fill space and counter the squares. I would replace with something a tad larger and vintage if i ever find..  I used no black frames because my stairwell walls are white and i felt the wood and silver and gold would be more interesting and warm and i like a true “gallery” look not too orderly…also I have a lot of black frames downstairs. What do you think of the baby bump…do pregnancy photos freak you out?

    {top photo by K Gallery, bottom photo by Feather Nest Photography}

    Not sure how to photograph this once its on the wall.the stairwell is no narrow so i wanted to give you a sneak peak. My one real regret is that this great new photo of Henry, his one year portrait by my friend Tami at the K Gallery, is up a bit high..you don’t really see it well as you go up the stairs..its a bit high and hidden.  I would like to have it more at eye level..Not sure how to fix that but keep in mind if you have one thing you really love to put it in a visible spot.

    The one wise thing i did (i think) is I left room to grow. I framed a bookpage (subject matter is the complexity of human love! how perfect!) and hung inside a large vintage frame at the bottom of the stairs…and at the top of the stairs I left an empty oval frame (one of my favorite vintage frames so good to use it on this wall, it’s been all over my house)..this leaves a spot to grow and display what God has for us in the future..another child?  more photos of the boys as they grow?…we’ll see…I love the open feeling it leaves..room to grow and do more “living.”

    Good luck with your GALLERY and photos walls…is it making you pull your hair out????  If you have any tips leave in the comments..i would love to hear and share with clients! Just remember it is worth the effort!

     Go in peace!

    One word.

    P i a n o .

    actually three words.  P i a n o + s m a l l  r o o m

    This is the deal.  My husband needs a piano and has been looking for one for ages.  He grew up in a home with a piano and thinks our boys should too.  I totally agree and love the idea of having a piano in our home. The frustrating part for my husband is I am not a musician so i don’t get the “tone thing” and all of that..I just wanted a neat old piano.  I just though i could find an old piano on the side of the road and paint it and it would be so clever….

    But no, apparently pianos that have been sitting in someones pasture for 50 years may LOOK neat (think Chris Tomlin’s Amazing Grace *my chains are gone* video) but they don’t  have “good tone” and it can’t be repaired minus a fortune and so we need a newer model.   And he said no to ever painting a piano.  So this idea below, while cute isn’t feasible for us;;

    I do like the plates…from the Addicted 2 decorating blog!

    And then there is the space issue. Regardless, he took the plunge yesterday and bought one.  It’s coming NEXT WEEK!  We realize you are supposed to put it on an inside wall if possible and all of that…we are going to try but it may have to go near a window…we will see.  I am both scared and excited about all of this..it will be fun to hear Elton playing each day, he is really good.  But yes a little nervous about possibly having to move my sofa in front of the windows and it all looking so crowded.

    In the meantime, I am scouring blogs and shelter mags for inspiration for decorating around the piano.  The fun part once we find a place for it. And while I love this gorgeous look below its just not our current reality…

    {image from Southern Living}

    I love how Stephanie Nielsen has all glass on top of hers but i don’t know if that will work at my house;; But i am definitely thinking a lamp and stacks of books.

    {Nie Nie’s living room can be seen here}

    So there you go, it’s going to be crowded and it’s going to be new (black in case you wondered, a studio upright) and we will make it work.

    And there will be music in my house!

    In the meantime, if you have any piano design stories to share please leave in the comments and if you run across any inspirational photos, please send my way!

    This is the last time I paint a wall myself..i need to leave it to the professionals…when you say things to your husband like “we may need to put some trim up to cover those edges” it is time to lay down the paintbrush..and yet i love it, the instant gratification, playing with color.  But it is a challenge to get in painting time with two little ones. And big brother, bless is heart, is dying to help, tomorrow I promised him we can paint furniture outside!

    No pictures yet but we love the new opening in our kitchen wall..its like a new house and I can already see it is going to function so much better for our family.  And our family is growing….we are getting new kitties!

    Y’all meet SCOUT and PETAL…we’ve already had visitation with them and hope to welcome them home once all of this toxic paint mess is gone!

    And y’all please PRAY for Scout and Petal that God will keep them safe from these two fellas….that they will be fast friends and have lots of fun but that kitties will know when to run for their lives!

    Well it is official..my firstborn is now SIX years old.

    We celebrated with an outdoorsy camping party in the woods…

    It was right up his “six year old ALL BOY” alley..he loved it..in fact, he had so much fun and played so hard he came home sick, poor little fella.  So we have had lots of snuggles and sweet time the last couple of days. Here is the birthday boy…clearly I chose the shirt and he chose the hat (a hand me down from his cousin Jake..he loves this hat!). . .

    He has been talking about his birthday for months of course and he really wanted to invite all ten boys from his class, i felt bad at times saying no but once there on Saturday with the campfire and BB gun, i was glad we kept it small..just 4 friends and his cousin and lots of adults..plenty of supervision so they were able to do a little target shooting, fishing, and enjoy the campfire.

    We had the party at a camping shack that belongs to some friends…they are so gracious to let us use it occasionally!

    We didn’t have any planned activities really, just let the boys roam and enjoy the beautiful weather and setting!

    {not sure where he found that feather for his hat…so Drew!}

    We had the birthday boy’s favorite foods: cowboy soup, tortilla chips and brownies for dessert!  Along with hotdogs and smores.  It was nice not to have to haul a fancy cake down into the woods! For favors we had simple little lanterns from the camping section at Wal-Mart.  They were a big hit after the sun went down. Burlap on the tables and a few galvanized serving pieces and I was done decorating.

     Happy Birthday Drew-dle..You are a special boy and we love you!
