    Must update! I found the image below via a link to Apartment Therapy on the previous Cavallini post (thanks Debbie!) and that image shows the envelope “sheet”…notice in the lower right hand corner.

    This reminds me of the article in Southern Living that showed an enlarged envelope used as art..LOVE IT..I am sure many of you remember this article and image!

    I love everything about how he styled this…Over the weekend, I saw a green jar at Marshall’s just like this one !  And simple black frame…you could do this with your own old envelope or if you don’t have time for this project just frame the Cavallini envelope! So easy and bold..very graphic!

    I’ve known about this wonderful Cavallini ”wrapping paper” for a while…it’s more like a poster..I’ve seen it on Paper Souce and Kate’s Paperie as well.  Then a sweet client sent me a piece of it  (map of London) after I admired her map of Paris.  These prints or posters are such a nice size 20 x 28 and are printed on a nice weight paper.  Talk about cheap art…they are $4.50 on Kate’s Paperie and I found them even cheaper this weekend at Honey’s Home + Style  in Waco, Texas.  Honey’s has an awesome selection of these papers and a inspirational display of how to use as well… Matted and framed they could be a really large and an awesome and inexpensive way to fill a wall.  But at Honey’s they put them directly on the wall like wallpaper, layered and it looked awesome!  My friend Camille bought some too (yes we were on our girls weekend..more on that later) and I want her to mix in some of her old french dictionary pages and maybe add an old empty frame or two here and there for an amazing wall!

    I love the red map above..imagine that over a robin’s egg blue dresser! I think I am definitely going to be using some of these in my boy’s room when I put them together in one space. And this is just a smattering of what is available..they also make a huge Union Jack flag print  and enlarged letter envelopes with wonderful  handwriting… so graphic and just large and fab!

    Oh and I just might have a few to sell at a fun upcoming event in Houston..so if you live locally stay tuned for more information!

    I’ve been working on several nursery projects lately and while shopping I’ve come across some yummy eye candy. Like the SOFT knit dolls above from blabla..they are so fun! And this crib, from Layla Grace.  I LOVE Jenny Lind cribs but I have to admit I like this too.

    Or this fabric by Jennifer Paganelli at Sew Mama Sew!  Not your traditional nursery fabric but I love this print and think it would look great on drapes or a crib bumper.

    Oh and this slide by IKEA…so cute.

    What is your favorite item right now to use when decorating for kids?

    My friend Carli just built a new home. She has used a lot of great ideas including salvaged beadboard in several areas, like here, the backsplash of her craft room. I love it!

    This is the real deal.  Old salvaged beadboard. I love how it looks with the fresh white cabinets and metal counters. Aren’t all of the colors wonderful…she especialy loves the turqouise! I agree!  Can’t wait to show you more of her home in the future.

    Oh and aren’t those huge scissors great?!  This really illustrates how wonderful an oversized object looks on top of cabinets or really anywhere in a room..so many of use struggle with those awkward areas.  I bet she bought the scissors at Canton..she is an expert at shopping the Canton Flea Market!!! Carli is so talented..she used to have a flower shop in my hometown!

    Thanks for letting us take a peak in your craft room my friend! Enjoy the new house!

    Recently a reader emailed me interested in the idea of adding vintage character to new construction..on a budget!  Of course the idea of building a new “old home” is common and but often means custom.  Custom for the most part means a generous budget.  With building costs up everywhere, the luxury of custom homes is well, more and more a luxury. Like this kitchen. wow.

    Many young families want a unique home but can’t necessarily afford the custom beadboard cabinet doors for the fridge! Luckily there are so many great blogs at our fingertips that have DIY suggestions and fresh ideas for adding character and interest to suburban living and new construction. So that is my first suggestion if you want to infuse character to a newer home.

    • READ BLOGS.  There are so many wonderful blogs like Lettered Cottage, Inspired Home, the Nesting Place, Restyled Home and  Young House Love that are writing wonderful posts on this very topic. Please share other blogs suggestions in the comments..we are all constantly looking for fresh blogs to enjoy.
    • BEADBOARD yes we’ve been talking about this a lot lately and it just works, in both old and new homes. In kitchens, baths, hallways, mudrooms, kids rooms..you name it. This is a must in a new old home. Notice how this bath has such a vintage old house feel even though all of the fixtures appear brand spanking new!  Beadboard..of course the pedestals sinks help too!;;  My mom used to have a collection of old bathtubs and pedestals sinks..but that is another post!

    • TALL CEILINGS skip the funky tray ceilings and cathedrals..just plain and tall…tall ceilings make even the tiny children’s room just feel fab.
    • GOOD TRIMWORK-even just 1×4 or stock trim..maybe adding square medallions at corners.., it doesn’t take a custom millwork..you can find things via catalogs and stock items to beef up trim around doors in main living areas and maybe even throughout the home..just plan ahead and be ready!

    • OLD DOORS..not every door in your house but at least 1 or even a few..not even super old but something with some character for a special spot, a hallway closet or pantry..if you know the sizes before the builder starts it sure helps..or skip doors in some areas and add curtains..Especially fun is a an old screen door on a pantry like Layla at the Lettered Cottage did in her dining room pictured below.

    My mom had a picture out of Country Living illustrating this idea in a kitchen on a pantry..it was a corner pantry..anyone remember that image??..I wish i had that tear sheet..she kept it from years.  Can you tell this “new old house” is a concept my mom loves..she built two homes this way..one very custom, one more on a budget.  So many of these ideas are from homes I lived in or ideas I heard my mom discuss. OK, back to our list.

    • DOOR KNOBS and HARDWARE..you can shop around online…Van Dykes and D LAWLESS and find glass doorknobs or from junk stores..not every room but maybe a powder room bath door. Just to add a little interest. And for kitchen cabinets think bin pulls and glass knobs…

    • ACCESSORIES like an old sign or letters like those pictured above and/or FURNITURE like primitive table in the entry, or a mish mash of old chairs around a “fancy” dining table, etc..can lend so much character and set the tone in your new home..I could go on and on of course, such as..
    • OLD MANTLES either on a fireplace or just as furniture. I saw this one at Urban Market in Houston recently…

    • LESS CARPET We all love wood floors of course, laminates don’t bother me, shop around and see what you can find or consider stained concrete..  tall ceilings and no carpet instantly give an old house feel I think…

    {Schoolhouse light from Restoration Hardware}

    • LIGHTING and other fixtures whether it’s old school house lights in the kitchen, a vintage chandelier over the bed or dining table, farm lights outside by garage or backdoor..a few well thought out lights, not necessarily$$$$, will go a long way..I know people who have saved lights for years to use in new homes!
    • EXTERIOR skip the brick if possible except for steps, sidewalk or patio.  Wood or similar siding obviously gives a more cottage feel with character or better yet consider PAINTED BRICK.  Oh how I love painted brick…that’s another post in itself!

    Last but not least, BE CAREFUL-DON’T OVERDO. Be careful not to go overboard on the vintage elements. One old door here, a bathroom with beadboard, a neat old sign over the kitchen table, etc..but not EVERY element in the home must be one of kind. Just a little effort really will go a long way and you can always add things as you find.

    Just remember, character doesnt have to mean custom (aka $$$)!!! Just some planning, thought and creativity! What have you done in your new home to lend character and vintage feel?

    What a crazy week…my poor little fella has a cold and there is a lot of ‘end of the year’ exhaustion but there also seems to be inspiration blooming everywhere..like this brilliance from Rae at Armommy..hello, this means I no longer have to nicely say “shhh” when someone passes through one of our bedroom doors (the one that has so much “character” it does not sit level..ha!)..thanks Rae!

    And these placemats, also by Armommy. Do I even need to explain the cuteness?…I didn’t think so! Read my recent post on Armommy here at Oh My! Handmade Goodness, a great new blog.

    And it appears while I am thinking about beadboard, the Nester is thinking about board and batten..love it, tons of great links too..also love her new drapes!  What a great office!

    So hang on mamas, school is nearly out and there will be more time to stay home, work on projects and enjoy kids and a relaxed schedule! At least that is my plan…can’t wait!

    Lets talk about beadboard. Oh how I love beadboard, usually slathered up with white paint BUT I must admit I love the look above painted a with color!

    One of my bedrooms growing up (we lived in several different homes) had it on the ceiling..the old kind with the gaps and cracks (which I actually love..don’t like it too perfect..more about that in a bit)…However, I must say, beadboard is not a good floor treatment..yes I am serious, we lived in a historic home when we were newlyweds and it had beadboard on the bathroom floor..not a nice feeling on the feet!and just a weird use of beadboard.  Not to mention the cleaning!  ha!

    {Image from Meredith Corporation}

    So with the exception of floors, I think beadboard is perfection in many different areas..obviously ceilings, mudrooms, kitchen backsplash, nursery, entry, mudroom, ceilings and of course bathrooms.  I think some of the tile companies even market a ceramic tile beadboard look if humidity is a concern.

    Here it is below in classic white. I love it in hallways and entryways where there is not a lot of room for artwork or even a bench.

    And everyone is talking about beadboard..read what The Remodeling Guy says here and even the NYTimes did this article..because beadboard is not just for cottage anymore..its popping up in newer homes and even the city!

    No matter how popular and widely loved it has become, there is still nothing to me like seeing it on an old porch ceiling…in that great Southern tradition of haint blue..great combo!

    … or inside a piece of authentic utilitarian furniture.  LOVE.

    Yes, old beadboard surely makes me swoon whether on a porch, inside an old cabinet or on a ceiling!

    So we know beadboard is great in many places but my question is..which type of product do you prefer for current projects:

    1. vintage style strips or planks, installed the old school way… I like this method, the history major part of me feels this is “authentic” and most accurate..ha! It is also probably the most expensive and most trouble..so unless you live in an historic home and really care about details…this may not be the way to go..it also can shift and show gaps over the years..I like this but it might drive some people crazy!
    2. beadboard “panels” or sheets  they come in various grades and price points but I know for a fact you can buy the sheets really inexpensively at big box home improvement stores…This is a great solution if you are trying to cover an ugly or scarred wall in a bath or on a ceiling..you do have to consider seams, perhaps add a strip of molding/trim over the seams but not the gaps and cracks like the old stuff.
    3. beadboard wallpaper. Correct me if I am wrong but I think this has been in the home improvement stores for a while..along with other “paintable” heavy wallpapers.  Recently, however it has stormed the Internet.  Rhoda at Southern Hospitality did a great post on it complete with fab pictures and links to others who have used the product.  Very easy and like Rhoda says, if you don’t want to mess with removing molding and cutting trim, nails etc.., this is a great way to go.and it is inexpensive! I have even seen this product in Ballard’s catalog!

    SO WHICH HAVE YOU USED for your projects?? Where in your home? Which look do you prefer??  Is there really even a difference visually unless you really take note and are a beadboard snob ..ha!??? I can’t wait to hear what y’all think, share links and leave comments!

    Some people just have so much style and just pull things together and make it look so effortless.  Not pretentious, not too fancy, just interesting , unique and adorable! Meet Emily from Jones Design Company.  She is the mom to three adorable boys and when I first discovered her blog she was expecting a baby girl.  I was so anxious to see what she would do for a girl after being a “boy mom” (like me) for so long.  She did not disappoint.

    Love this vignette when you walk into the room…so sweet and serene…swoon over the paper.

    Not a lot of pink but plenty of ruffles and LINEN.  Oh yes, you know she had me at “linen”…. and pearls! I love this arrangement.  She tells all about it on her blog–details are linked below.

    And this wallpaper..wait to you hear about this..so smart!  I love it. Notice the galvanized, industrial looking bins on the changer shelf..love how they contrast with the florals and “cut the sweetness”..genius and so important in a girls room IF you don’t want it to be too princess-y.

    What I love is the room is feminine and sweet but not so PINK it is frightening.  Not to offend all of you pink lovers..pink is fine and many love but I’m not a pink girl.  Emily isn’t either so I could really relate to the direction she was going.  Oh what the heck, a touch of pink is perfection with this pillow! And the blue stool.  I love blue in a girl’s room.

     {Oh my!  Pacis in a silver bowl..how sweet!}

    To see more of this amazing room go here. Emily also did a post with information on how she completed various projects, paint colors, sources etc…click here for those details…You definitely want to look around her blog and past posts.  Thanks for letting me share this Emily..you are inspiring! God bless you, your family and that sweet baby girl!

    I just love typography and words and vintage signs, nothing compares when it comes to drama, size, color and personality..whether you have cottage interior or more contemporary..I’ve noticed them for years and this year at Round Top I noticed  the authentic ones are getting more and more expensive!  Of course, there are some great reproductions out there but if you find the real deal, hold on to it tight!

    {Country Living}

    I just adore this one..red and a cow! The modern light and stark whites keep the sign from being too rustic.  I would love to find an old Sunday school or hymn sign or something from an old cafe/kitchen/food related…  Do you have a vintage sign?? Where did you get it?  Where are you displaying your sign?..

    Pictured above is one of my favorite vintage signs in all of Texas..too bad they won’t let me have it, maybe because they still use it!

    I was a part of rescuing an old grocery store sign here in my little town recently (not near as dramatic as it sounds, just mentioned to someone who cared;;)..I am such a preservationist that way..ha!  Anyway, so glad a good steward has that piece of local history safely in storage! Be sure and stop and pick up any pieces of social history you see laying around…these old signs are decorative and often have meaning too!
