I just finished up this kid space for one of my favorite clients and I wanted to share!  I get lots of questions about kid spaces and especially boys’ rooms.  Some people think boy rooms are hard but really with all of the great vintage and industrial inspiration going on, its always fun for me to do boy rooms!

This little boy is 7 years old.

He loves to read, Texas football and baseball, history and insects!

The walls are Martha Stewart Bedford Gray (from Home Depot) and the IKEA bunk beds are painted in one of my favorite colors, BM Chelsea Gray.

The nightstand is the Aiden from World Market, another fave of mine.  I love the books and toolbox my client found.  And the Pottery Barn kids lamp is the perfect touch.  We had discussed simple quilts from Target or Pottery Barn for the base bedding, but the mom ended up getting these at IKEA and they work great.  The sheets and plaid accents pillows are from Target.  In fact the plaid Target pillows really inspired the entire design of gray and orange.  The wooden letters are from Restoration Hardware kids. The shams in the tiny print are from West Elm. I love mixing bedding!

The vintage map add ads a bit bit more color to all of the gray.  I love orange and green and navy together for boys!

The light is one I have used before for little boys and its a great value and look..the fisherman pendant from PBkids. love it!

The IKEA spice ledges were painted navy for a little color and the navy stripe rug also gave some blue to the orange and gray scheme.  The kid sheets are from Target.  Sheets are a good place to allow your kids to make a choice and choose something you might not want a quilt or duvet and they add some color!

I love this fox pillow, that THRESHOLD brand at Target is really knocking it out of the park!  The arrow pillow is from them too!

This room is small and there is a playroom nearby but we did a few faves in the decor like his dinosaurs to guard his prized football!

Bins hold paperback reader books and little things that boys collect.

The little pennants are from etsy and mom just strung them together. The gray tweed and plaid totes with leather handles are also THRESHOLD from Target.

This room is for just one boy but his mom says he enjoys playing and reading on the top bunk! Mom has the word art custom made on canvas using she and Dad’s own words, including a line about Texas Tech football! You can also see a peek of the drapes here.  They did not photograph well because of the sun but they are the chocolate grainsack stripe from Ballard.  Sold out for now but I hope they bring them back.  They are a great drape!

The Case Pendant it is called and its been out of stock quite a while.   I purchased mine in the fall of 2010.  They sold out fast. Then  restocked. Then sold out. Since then, PB has also  come out with the Bolton which I like just as well if not better but I have to say I do love the Case in my space.

The Bolton below which I have used over tables and in foyers. It is a direct knockoff of a Circa lantern.

The copper top on the Case is pretty but the second I pulled it out of the box I knew I had to paint it all black. So I grabbed a can of chalk paint (I didn’t have any black matte on hand) and I taped off the glass a bit and sprayed it!  I was a bit hesitant but I knew the look I wanted and I am glad I went for it.

You see what I really wanted was an amazing pendant from the store BROWN in Houston but I knew that was out of my price zone. BUT I must say BROWN is amazing and you must visit there store and their lighting is so unique. It is definetely more special than anything mass produced from PB or the internet so if you can invest in lighting, BROWN is the place!

But alas it was not meant to be the Brown lantern and me so in PB to save the day at least for now;  Still not super cheap but more in my budget.  So a smidge of spray paint later and ta da!

My husband did not like it at first.

He said something clever like “the University called and they want their light back”…but now he loves it.  Well maybe not LOVE but he likes it I think.

And at first the scale seemed big but that is what I wanted…an oversized lantern look. I love how it looks large and in charge in the view from the kitchen. (man I am glad that carpet is gone!)

In 2010 when I was planning the “freshening” of my dining room there were not a lot of lantern options that weren’t high end like Brown or Circa and even the $300 PB lantern wasn’t cheap.  Now there are a lot of great options for less.  Tessa turned me on to this option at Bellacor. I used it in the Williams dining room and love it.  At $169 THIS is a great deal.

And the wonderful Shades of Light has amazing lantern called the Richmond.  I am going to feature a remodel soon that uses the Richmond and it is a great option as well!

I love the brass rod in the center..the finish on this piece is great.

It comes with the bracket or without.  Very Bevelo lighting looking but for less price.

I also used the wall lanterns of the Richmond on a recent job to flank front doors..looks fab!

 I didn’t mean for this to turn into my bibliography on lanterns..just wanted to let you know about the return of the CASE and remind you about a few of my faves!

Next on the menu is Tipsy Parson.  This is probably one of my favorite things we did.  I met a dear friend here for Sunday brunch and it was the perfect spot.

The perfect rich gray trim with red door.  This makes me want to paint my door back red.  I have been missing it since the day I painted it gray:(

Tipsy Parson oozes charm from the second you arrive! I mean seriously just look.

It is located in West Chelsea and I heard about it from Garden & Gun Magazine and Restyle Source’s local city guide for NYC.

We ate in this back dining room and though it got crowded fast it was worth the effort! One side had these wonderful fabric panels with sconces and the other side has John Derian decoupaged plates and mirror type collage…so charming! Mix of chairs and pews and tufted leather throughout, quirky but refined.

My friend said she thought it felt a bit New England, I thought it felt a bit “eat local with style” similar vibe to Early Girl Eatery in Asheville which I love. I probably got the eat local feel because from my  window seat I had a great little view of their raised veggie beds, and the gorgeous gray color trim.

Who takes a picture of a gray board? ME!

Oh and the restroom configuration was so cute..trough sink out in the open area and wallpaper.

I didn’t get to go in the basement but I think there was dining area down there as well!

What an experience! Setting up a booth is a lot of work but a lot of fun too… especially when you get to hang out with friends!

There wasn’t much time for styling!

Between the three of us we had SO. MUCH. STUFF.  from big tables to teeny tiny vintage trinkets!

 The big pine table went to one of my clients in Sugarland!  So glad she got it…its a great piece~

 And our booth was right next to Campbell’s Melange so we had lots of advice from Melisse’s dad on proper salesmanship and negotiating. Below you can spot the back of his head;

Yes it was windy I had these cards blowing everywhere but the sunshine and nice weather were really amazing and worth the “breeze”! I still have that numbered can available, would make a great lamp, and a few black plates, some sold.

That little bamboo shelf sold right off! I had these burlap cloths made for the event but I don’t think my seamstress will work with that much burlap again for a long time…but they did turn out cute and hid our plastic totes!

I am so glad my sweet friend Kelly joined us, she is an estate sale sleuth and she had a lot of unique small things to share with everyone…you can find her shop Southern Gilt on etsy.

Watch out for her if you see her at a Houston area estate sale, she might knock you down!

I thought we were going to have some knock downs over the Union Jack banners..people love those things! God save the Queen!

Those green chairs went to the young daughter of a sweet client.  I was so glad she snapped them up! The chairs and many of the larger pieces belonged to Christi, she has an etsy shop as well as a shop in Brenham at Hermanns Furniture.

The fab Becki from Curious Details also stopped by as well as several of my clients and blog readers! Thank you to everyone that said hello and introduced yourself…it means a lot to me!

It was a fun weekend.  I don’t know if I will do it again anytime soon but I am glad I did it this show!

One of the first things we talked about was “wood plank walls everywhere wouldn’t that be amazing” and she did it! I am so excited she actually did it everywhere!

And look at this sink she found.  Vikki is amazing at finding things and details!

Henry pendants will be over the island..nautical but not cheesy…and not too dressy!  perfection.

And the reading nook.  Oh the reading nook.  Pinterest had just started when she started this project and this one of my first pin boards with inspiration for the reading nook. It turned out so good Vikki! Can’t wait to see your precious girl in there reading a book!

And in case you are wondering what it was like before? Certainly not hideous. But ho hum and her family really enjoys going to the beach and has had this house for years and wants it to be something they can really enjoy.

 I had heard of it but didn’t think I would be very interested.  I was wrong.  It is such a neat store.  It’s kind of like a Chinese General Store.

Food items and paper lanterns, tons of stuff and ceramics! I stopped in my tracks when I saw these bowls…so many patterns and sizes and $4-12.  Take that Anthropolgie and your $38 little bowls!;

Um hum. ginger jars. Lots.

I like the talls ones and these squatty ones too! Loves this bowl…it was pricey but large, perfect for dining room table or place to throw mail.

 And they ship. I must admit though that I enjoyed their store more than the website. Has anyone ever ordered from them online

In fact if you ship out of state from their store (they wrap it up right there at the counter and tell you how much to ship) then you pay no tax so it evens out or at least makes the shipping very reasonable.

 The Holiday Express we stayed in our first few nights was actually fine, very new and comfy comfy beds but it was TINY like most NYC rooms. Rather than splurge at RL or Tiffany or other shopping I really wanted to spend a night somewhere really inspiring..this place fit the bill and I am glad I made the splurge.

 The hotel is called the NoMad because this area of the city is know as “north of Madison Square”..it’s advertised as a great location and it is central I suppose, near Gramercy Park and the Flatiron District, Chelsea , Midtown etc…but the immediate area of Broadway and 28th where it is located is not very charming, maybe because of some construction going on. But its close walk to Madison Park which I enjoyed and the famous Flatiron Building at Broadway and Fifth Avenue.  There is also an Shake Shack in Madison Park which I didn’t get to try but heard is great! The NoMad is also near Eataly where Melisse and I dined on Sunday night.  Eataly is like a Italian food hall…amazing!

The lobby and public spaces of The Nomad (which I did not get a photo of) are very dark. The hallways shown below are rich in color but not as dark.  In contrast, the rooms are bright and full of light. It felt like a progression of light.

I stayed in a Atelier room and it was so spacious…nearly 400 square foot and a clawfoot tub!  Not all of the atelier rooms have a tub so ask for one!

The room has a faux screen like wall called a paravent.  French designer Jacques Garcia curated the rooms with wonderful arts and linens. His usual style is much more opulent.  I really like the restraint in these rooms. The paravent is more than a screen it actually goes all the way to the ceiling..padded wall. That conceals the sink and shower and the water closet is separate, very European.

Love the tiny simple art in the bathroom…the art in each room is unique and so eclectic and wonderful.

Also really liked the trim color, similar to BM Kendall Charcoal. Interesting around the tub area the trim is dark gray and walls white but the entrance and mini bar of the room and water closet or a dark dark chocolate brown paint.  The contrast is so nice.

By the bed there is a great example of a gallery wall using different frames and some pieces matted and some not! And its very asymmetrical , just to one side of the bed and nothing over the bed. Love that.

Love that distressed leather chair and notice the lighting.  And the view from the bed is the lovely tub! Frette linens.

Great view from the tub and reclaimed floors were so pretty.  Each room has a different hand knotted rug according to the website. And more vintage inspired lighting by the desk.

And of course the tub…I loved the Victoria + Albert fauceut and tub!

This was my first trip to NY and I am so grateful I got to stay at this place if even for just one night! This Monday morning, I am back sipping coffee and doing laundry! What is your favorite hotel in NYC or anywhere? I would love to hear. I may be addicted to the boutique hotel thing!

From the get go, this country girl was thrilled with the urban eye candy and charm. From the teeny to the glam!

I plan on doing several posts about some of the stores and places we visited. Of course our first stop was Ralph Lauren and the Madison Ave flagship stores…I was determined to see the Rhinelander Mansion and it was really interesting! No photos there;( This is the women’s RL store below on Madison, Rhinelander Mansion across the street (and much more interesting in my opinion just loved it!)

The next day was ABC Home..the mecca,,,8 floors of goodness, photo taken with my back to Fishs Eddy another fun place I will blog about and most of you know about if you have been to NYC.

I met up with my friends Melisse and Susy while there…they are antique dealers and we all love similar things so that made it even more fun!

Here I am with Suzy(L), her cousin Deanie who joined us for the Bette Midler play, moi, and Melisse!

Yep, we saw BETTE MIDLER! Here she is blowing us kisses as left after the show…we were so excited,especially when Melisse got her autograph.  We were thrilled to catch such a legend on Broadway.

I relied heavily on tips from bloggers, clients and designers I have collected about where to stay, eat and of course “you gotta go to ABC Home” where to shop type of advice etc…so much to do and so little time! One of my favorite city guides was from Restylesource.

can’t wait to share my favorite shop…John Derian in Greenwhich Village..so wonderful.

THE AFTER!

We removed the peninsula where the stove was before and opened up the breakfast room to the kitchen proper and added a thin island and penandts…this moved the stove to an outside wall which the homeowners were fine with but overall the general footprint is very similar..we did add more butler pantry area and close one door but laundry room door stayed the same..and of course we had to add some open shelving and lighting! oh the lightning! I love how the lighting is different but all flows.

We also moved the dishwasher and lost the double ovens but they gained an amazing Viking range with shelf!

Notice the tongue and groove wood ceiling and the beadboard backsplash..they add so much..there is no subway tile in this kitchen..we used glossy white paint on beadboard and that has been fine ..and this is a cook’s kitchen..not just for show.  The carerra and farm sink are also holding up well.  The homeowner says she is careful with her winebottles and they use a big butcher block a lot but the carerra and wood top on island are holding up great!
