Will the duvet fit?

Or rather will the down comforter fit inside the duvet???  I get asked this question so much…”which insert to buy for my duvet?”  Honestly, I struggle with this too.  There are so many options.  We all know there are various levels of warmth for different climates but what about fit? There is discussion here about using various bedding inside duvets such as blankets or matelasse for summer month and “fit” so I know my clients and I aren’t the only ones trying to get the perfect down comforter options.

We all want a good fluffy insert that won’t be too small or puny looking?? Although I am open to using an empty duvet folded at the end of the bed for layering appeal in the summer months.  But most people want the big fluffy insert and I often suggest my clients making custom duvets buy the insert of their choice first (get the weights and brand they want) and then measure their custom duvet from there or use those measurements with the workroom.  Apparently not all duvets are the exact same size?  Am I crazy or do y’all agree? Not all kings or twins or whatever are created equal it seems…

Speaking of bedding, I am of course loving the Southern Living Design House’s recent use of these buffalo check bedding items from IKEA!

Southern Living Idea House 2012 (I love that it’s an old house too!)

Funny I had been wanting to add the buffalo check  duvet (they didn’t use it here but did use the matching shams and drapes) to the end of my own bed this winter and nearly bought at a recent trip to IKEA and didn’t because I thought “do i really want IKEA bedding on my master bed.”  Well the Lord humbled me, because when it wasn’t two weeks later I saw the above picture revealed in Southern Living.  I knew if its good enough for the Southern Living Idea house it’s good enough for moi.  Silly I know but honest. . All of this to say, WHAT ABOUT IKEA duvet inserts?  I hear good and bad.  They have the different weights and they aren’t cheap.  They have great feather down pillow inserts at GOOD prices. BUT I have also heard you can’t return IKEA bedding so you need to be sure.

So what are your thoughts on this little issue?  Do you sew ties or loops inside your duvet to tie the insert in the corners so it won’t slip?  do you double stuff or buy a size larger?  I am going to keep gathering information on this topic and I will share as I learn more and hope you will leave your thoughts as well. We spend a large amount of our lifetime in bed and want it to be comfy AND lovely!

  1. I have (hand) stiched ribbon to the 4 inside corners of the duvet and 4 corners of the insert, knot them together and what do you have? A duvet that stays in place! I do like that check?! Kind of classic for Ikea!!!

  2. We have an Ikea duvet insert and love it. I use it with a West Elm duvet.

I saw the Southern Living House in person and that room (above) was my favorite room in the house.

  3. They make these amazing little duvet corner clips that you can get at Bed, Bath and Beyond. They are kind of hard to track down sometimes, but they’re usually on the corner of some display in the bedding section. They are almost like little chip clips to hold your duvet and insert together. Best invention ever!

  4. this is a timely post Holly…I just bought the buffalo check duvet and matching shams at Ikea when I couldn’t find the fabric there or the linen duvet & shams they featured in the Idea House (which is beautiful in “person”…hubby and I visited there in June)…I’m using that room as my inspiration for my guest room re-do. I’m not ready for the reveal yet but making headway.

as far as the insert, i used a king size insert on the full/queen duvet and it fit perfectly…folded it at the foot of the bed and used only one of the buffalo check shams with two euro shams.

  5. I love the Ikea duvet insert for my kids. I got a very light weight one and have been pleased. I actually like it better than the expensive one we got for our wedding b/c I am so hot natured and can’t bear to use the fluffy big one!

  6. My covers and duvets come with the loops and ties, so I use them. I just bought my girls some duvet covers from The.Company.Store. I vacillated between a twin and full duvet; we’ll give the twin sizes I ordered (Over.stock) a whirl and if they don’t work, I’ll send them back for the full. I think it’s a scam that they don’t have standard sizes. 🙂

  7. A long, long, time ago I used to work for Pottery Barn and one thing they do is they put two duvets inside the duvet cover for their beds on display. Their beds always look super fluffy because of this. I’m not sure how practical this is for sleeping, might get kinda hot, but it looks good! I struggle with my king size bed because they don’t make a larger size duvet do they? So they can properly fill out the duvet cover?

  8. I attached mine on the inside with buttons… fixed the problem, thank goodness!

  9. All of the bed linens are IKEA…the white matelasse spread, the duvet & shams w/the little knots…saw them at IKEA..gorgeous!

  10. Ah, the duvet dilemma! I’ve never htought to attach mine to the corners at all. My husband and tag team to even it out from time to time. 🙂 I like mine fluffy, but not too hot. I got a good one on Overstock. Read tons of reviews and picked one. Love the Ikea check. I didn’t get to go to Atlanta or I would’ve picked that up for my guest room. Do you think they used the duvet to make panels? I was thinkign of using it to make a headboard. 🙂

  11. IKEA duvet all the way for us. We have two different weights for each bed in my house and you CAN return bedding. You can return everything there except mattresses, you get a credit towards a different mattress if you return within 90 days. (Just go to their site and scroll to the bottom, choose “Returns”.) Happy shopping!

  12. Do you know what we’ve faired very, very well with? A comforter and duvet from Target; I think they were the RE style ones. The comforter is a great weight; we’ve used it in the summer AND winter (in Maine!) The duvet ties in the corners, and they were $20 each. I bought white; I love white bedding with patterned sheets and pillows and a little throw for a pop of color. Great price for both and they’ve worked wonderfully for us!

  13. I can’t help at all. I live in Florida. It is too blasted hot here to use an insert. But I had to comment on what you said about “The Lord humbled me”. That made me laugh. He has a way of doing that so gently, doesn’t He? Love that you shared that with us.

  14. there’s buffalo check at IKEA????????

  15. I’ve used the ties and the clips, but they both seem to come loose eventually, leaving some corners empty and other parts overfull. Does using a size bigger for the insert help? I don’t know if it too overfull or lumpy? Of course, if you have a king bed, you can’t necessarily get a larger insert!

  16. we moved to a quilt a few years back because the shifting was driving me bat crazy. well mostly him, actually. the quilt is much lower maintenance. i do love the look though.

  17. That buffalo check – I KNOW! I saw it in Ikea the other night and just about fell over. So pretty! Hmmm…bet it would look great in my son’s room too! So versatile.

  18. I have always purchased my duvets from The Company Store. My mom purchased them there so I have as well. It’s not uncommon for a duvet cover to have an extra 4 inches in the length- the width always seems to fit for me but they’re just always so darn long! I have a footboard so my solution is to put the excess at the bottom so when I fold it down, it’s nice a fluffy and the “dead space” is hidden by the footboard. I also safety pin the corners in mine so it doesn’t move around- makes for every easy fluffing.

I have also been told that certain stores, like Pottery Barn, special make their duvet and covers so that ONLY their duvets fit perfectly in their covers- OF COURSE they do! Sneaky sneaky.

  19. I want this buffalo check for my son’s big boy room (and I’m going to pair it with your UH-mazing red applique monogram pillow from Tootledoo!), but when I go to Ikea’s site, I only see the duvet and shams that come with it. Does anyone know where to find the buffalo check euro shams shown in the Southern Living house, which I went to see last month and I was honestly in serious love with every detail of every room! I searched in the bedding and living room textiles and I don’t see the ones pictured.

  20. I totally agree on the duvet size variations. Exasperating!
I turn my duvet cover inside out and use tiny safety pins to pin the corners of the duvet to the cover. I add a couple of pins to the sides and also use them at the top. It works very well for me.

  23. Holly, I am relieved to hear of your approval of the Ikea buffalo check duvet cover, because I just ordered it and was also being a little concerned about the quality in the master bedroom. But it seems that the Lord has humbled me as well! The only problem is, I have been looking for the matching curtains and cannot find them on the Ikea website. Where did you get the buffalo check curtains? Are they also from Ikea?

  24. Hi Holly. I find myself with TWO twin Pottery Barn duvets (the red Vanessa pattern). Our bed is queen size. Any ideas on how I can make one of the twin duvets work? I love the pattern.

    Thanks!

  25. Jamie Lisa says

Ebay.com for the UK duvet. I purchased a USA KING SIZE duvet filler I love and a standard USA KING duvet cover. The cover IS a tiny bit big. Not much, but a bit. So I have discovered through 3 months of Internet research that duvet covers in the style/color I want are VERY VERY hard to find!! However, Australia and the UK HAVE A FEW. I like shiny material and my bedroom is done in silver/black and I LOVE glam!! Here’s the deal, in the USA a standard size KING duvet is 259 by 229 CENTIMETERS. And 90″ by 102″. In the UK, a U.S. king size is called a DOUBLE KING. And that standard duvet cover size is 260cm by 220cm. Wikipedia has an awesome chart breakdown of many countries and how their sizing differs. So I found one I love at $50 but it is 260cm by 220cm; and again, the U.S. KING is 229cm by 220cm. the lack of 9cm of length scares me a bit. And I can’t return it. My filler is a US KING down alternative overstuffed from Overstock and I love it. So should I do it? Or is 9cm too much of a size difference to risk it?? The length difference would be at the foot of my bed.
